Ilia Malinin

I love Ilia's new SP! It was one of the most exhilarating things I've ever seen in skating. First, one of the most gorgeous 4F on the face of the planet. I know that people have said that Ilia's 3A looks like transitional content, but seriously, that is what it was. But the real show stopper is Ilia's performance. It was great how the speed and intensity built through out the program. Just when I thought he was done, he pulled off that move on one hand . . . I know it sounds crazy but at that moment I thought a lightning bolt had gone off in the building and for a split second Ilia turned into a silhouette illuminated against a stark backdrop . . . but it was just my brain, haha. 😅

I'm looking forward to the costume reveal, but it was kind of interesting seeing Ilia's choreography without the extra color and intention a costume provides. I sometimes forget how some people don't know Ilia as well as we do, and they thought his custom warmup clothes was his costume. Oh well . . .

I can't talk about quints yet because I'm in denial or something. 😅 My brain exploded twice in one day.

I'm super excited to see this program throughout the season :yes1:

I must say. The voiceovers made me laugh the first time I heard it. I'm sure it'll get better and grow on me as the season goes on. And that it'll grow on me as the season goes by. It's creative for sure.
I am glad I am not the only one that giggled a bit when heard Ilia's voice. I think that is the first time I have ever heard the skater themselves do the voice overs in their programs. It was different. I just would like to know what Ilia considers home, is it family, country, ancestral homeland because I am just curious about that. I like the program and it know that he will add more to it as the season goes on.

Congratulations to Ilia! First gold of the season! That was a good score considering he lost a combo. I hope he doesn’t make a habit of skipping a combo😂 I loved the slide, the one footed back flip, and the raspberry twist in the spin! I didn’t mind the voice overs, and I think it makes it more meaningful and personal that Ilia chose the quotes and used his own voice. He really seems like such a thoughtful person

In his old JWC interview it sounds like he has very little personal connection to Russia. He's never been. He's not exactly going watery-eyed at the sight of birch-trees. I look at him and see an American kid through and through.

An American that's fluent in Russian lol.

I'm just so happy on how much he's grown as a skater over the past 3-4 years. When I was one of the first hyping him up. And now, OGM favorite!

It’s just incredible how he keeps improving and inventing new things. I feel so lucky we get to watch him skate!

That's the language the family speaks among themselves and in their house. So yeah, he's fluent in Russian.

I've met him as a little kid, and even in his younger years, you knew he was going to be one super special skater. One fun fact about him as a kid - his main form of warm-up during competitions was to hit his soccer ball. You won't see him doing jump rope or the traditional warmup routines of other skaters. He'd just be going around the rink with his ball, and Roman will be looking for him as his event is coming up.

Great program but ditch the voiceovers please. They aren't necessary. Shae Lynn has Ilia really dialed in and his improvement in presentation is measurable. If he skates clean I don't think there is anyone in the world currently who can beat him.

Every season, at least one of my favorite skaters comes up with a way to test my love, and this season Ilia has decided to teach me to appreciate voiceovers. 😄 I’m not usually a fan of those, although there have been a few that I thought were good, and I’m already getting into the idea of using it for his free skate. I like that he selected the quotes and used his own voice. This is far more personal and meaningful than the movie quotes that are usually used. I do not like an emotion choked voice suddenly breaking into the performance, or a voice dramatically muttering - most of the time the words are unintelligible on the stream. So I like that Ilia’s quotes were easy to listen to, and accessible but thoughtful.

I’m very excited to see Ilia this weekend at Grand Prix de France, hopefully with new costumes! I’m also hoping to see that raspberry twist spin again. My family won’t be able to watch live, but I’ll cheer and send vibes around the time Ilia skates.
