Ilia Malinin

Ilia's Vanity Fair photoshoot:

The NBC videos from Nationals were taken down, but you can still rewatch Ilia's wonderful SP here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEdH5wAx9yI&list=PLbF2SlDWlNcnJ8MR75CyRCUAA4laZP-Js&index=5

It is so cute that he was surprised by the storm of dragon plushies. I'm grateful to the people who made him laugh.

Now that Ilia's second set of costumes have had a few outings, which do you like best? First or second set? I love both but my only complaint is that we only got to see the first set two times. Maybe one of the first costumes will make an appearance in the Team event 🤞.

I have a hunch that Ilia was the first person in history to do that specific FS layout that he used at Nationals.

There he is... I was starting to get worried a little or maybe a lot....

Looking pretty

I know, right? I was thinking, please don't wait for the last minute, Ilia!

The CBS extended web version of the interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4yNBUWhFHnU

If you already saw the TV version, in the extended interview Ilia talks about how annoying it was to be labeled "just a jumper", why he uses his mother's surname, his relationship with his parents and their dynamic as coaches, some more talk about what it takes to do quads, quints, what skating means to the Olympic audience, and what he is looking forward to at the Olympics.

It's a good interview. While a lot of this content will be familiar to Ilia fans, there are some things in there that I've never heard him put into words before, or things that he elaborated on a bit more. I liked what he said about the Olympics. It sounds like he is looking for fellowship with other athletes from around the world. He says he is looking forward to learning about the other sports and what experiences the athletes have in common and what might be unique to their sport. I think he is looking for inspiration and mutual support. This exemplifies one of the things I like about Ilia as an athlete: he sees skating and sports as something bigger than himself and cares about the sport and people in it.
