I personally don't think Fumie is good enough to win a world championship without Sasha and others splating like they did at the Olympics. Fumie would have to be near perfect though-not just clean. If Sasha skates like she did at US nationals I think she'll beat Fumie easy. I think Joannie has the better shot at being world champ if she can withstand home pressure. Some times skating at home lifts you so we're see. And of course Carolina Kostner and a Euro Elena could maybe beat a decently clean skate by Sasha. I hope Sasha skates with a lot passion and spark. I don't think anyone at worlds can beat a Sasha like that (Unless Irina does get to do worlds). Of course anyone can have the skate of a life time so we'll have to allow the skaters to skate before we determine the winners.

I wouldn't count on it. To paraphrase what another poster said, if ANYONE can lose the gold when it's right in her grasp it's Cohen. (The only time this didn't happen IIRC was 2006 Nationals.) So that's why I'm predicting a winner other than her. She wasn't born to be a champion, and that's that.
The competition is very weak, though. Some of the other skaters have been on and off, so you can never tell what performance they'll give. Suguri seems to bring it when it counts most, though. And Cohen, you can count on her to give a reasonably good performance with one or two errors (that may or may not be falls).

Sasha certainly has the programs to win gold. As for Fumie I have not seen her at her best . Did anyone see her performance at Japanese Nationals when she won Gold? She did beat Shiz and Asada.

Fumie's problem is that she has a great SP, but her LP is a choreographic dog next to Sasha's R&J and her spins and spirals don't compare. In Turin, Sasha had 2 falls and still finished ahead of Fumie. Suguri certainly has a very strong chance to get on the podium, but if Sasha has two or more major errors between the QR/SP/LP, I think Carolina or Joannie has a stronger potential to upset if they can turn superb performances in all 3 parts of the competition. Based on their past track records, however, I'm skeptical. If both Slute and Divakawa are out, then I would consider Meissner a podium possibility also, though she won't win.

The judges would probably not put a clean Rochette over a clean Suguri. A clean Kostner? That is harder to say, she hasnt done anything better than a semi-disaester all year.

My own feelings are that Sasha should win this based on my own preferences for performance over technical. However.......
Sasha has to skate clean. The Olys gave her a break. The new judges may not be impressed with the powerful skate after falls.
Irina has a lot to prove to overcome the totally undistinguished skate in Torino. The Bielman's aren't selling like they used to and the demand for 3x3s is growing steadily.

I don't think Irina will go to worlds. If she does, I don't think she will win. She seemed to lose momentum toward the end of the season. She lost to Asada at GPF, then she skated just well enough at Euro's to win (she had two mistakes in the LP) . Even if she skates clean at worlds, it may not be enough unless she has at least one 3-3 combination. Others have caught up with her in how to use the COP to build points. Last year she was way ahead in the game.

Y'all are harsh. I think that if you look at the competition and then figure in Irina's ability to skate clean vs. history of bad performances then I'd say she has a good chance of winning worlds ~ espcially since the judges love her and will want to send her out big. Just like in '02. If she's healthy and strong and puts down a clean performance, I think she has a better chance of winning worlds than Joanine has of making the podium... But then, I never understand the facination with throwing a skater under the bus or assuming they will skate well based on a the previous showing at one competition. Remember when Alisa and Caro were gonna make noise based on GP and '05 Worlds? Didn't happen. But we'll see...

I read over on FSU that the ISU updated the roster on March 9, and still (a) does not list Slutskaya, but (b) still lists Arakawa. So, I don't know if this indicates that Irina, in fact, will not be there, or, if the ISU is merely hopelessly slow in updating matters.
I think I'll take wvgal's word for it, because isn't she a rep for Irina or at least has inside connections to her? So I think she would know best what is going on of all of us.
ETA: puzzles me that Arakawa is still listed. Didn't various articles say she wasn't going because of lack of preparation?

Well- I don't know if its that great of a walk in the park. If Sasha is not healed (or completely trained) - having to skate an LP first, then Sp, then 2nd LP could cause problems. And usually her best performance is the short and worst the second LP.
I'm looking for Rochette to cause some damage. Without Irina and Shizuka she will really have a shot at that podium. We'll also see how US 2 and 3 do with a real shot.

Heard the words from Russia FS community (or rather top FS circle, since the one got the words does not connect well in US FS commnunity) that there will be new rule on Bielmann (something like counted only one position).....some young skaters are already advised not bielmann too much to save their bodies.
