Is Kimmie Meissner underrated?

Kimmie (so far) versus Sarah and Sasha:

Kimmie:

2007 Skate America
2007 Four Continents
2007 U.S. Nationals
2006 Worlds

Sarah:

2002 Olympics
2001 Skate Canada
1999 Vienna Cup

Sasha:

2006 U.S. Nationals
2003 Trophee Lalique
2003 Skate Canada
2003 Grand Prix Final
2002 Trophee Lalique
2002 Skate Canada
2001 Finlandia Trophy

Thank you for posting that. You know what I am noticing here? Kimmie at only 18 has already won more international or U.S Championship calibre events then Sarah won her whole career. Sasha took until her 3rd year of senior competition to win something bigger then the Finlandia Trophy. Kimmie in her first 2 years of senior competition won all those events you pointed out.

Kimmie's win at Worlds in '06 was also very impressive. She was up against Fumie, Sasha, Carolina Kostner, etc. The only competitors missing were Irina and Shizuka. It's not as if this was a weak field by any means. Sasha was being crowned before the competition started and Kimmie stole the show. Major props to her.

To me wins aren't everything. I rather watch Sasha skate a typical Sasha performance then Kimmie a perfect one any day. Sasha sparkles. I rewatch Sasha's many Silvers but never Kimmie's top skates. In my opinion Sasha has something that made her Sasha-what is it that makes Kimmie-Kimmie? MK isn't as famous or revered as she is just because of her wins. Her love of competing especially in front of a US nationals crowd is joyous to watch. She had/has the ability to make a crowd feel what she felt. In my opinion Kimmie is a sweet girl off the ice but on it she's a bit boring. I think she can find a way to show us something special-she's still young and only been to one olympics. But if she doesn't do anything else in her career then being World champion doesn't make her memorable. For me at least.

Actually I don't remember her being crowned at all. At least I certainly wasn't.

Actually many thought it would be between Cohen and Suguri. But Meissner appeared out of virtually NOWHERE and dropped a bomb. Arguably, even more stunning than S. Hughes winning the Olympics.

Well, TBH, Sarah should have taken Skate America 2001 and Kimmie should not have won any of those except Worlds 2006.

And although Kimmie was strong at Worlds 2006 and deserved that particular title, I'd rank her overall offerings there as the "weakest" World Championship win we've seen from 1996 to the present.

That's a very menial way of thinking about the subject.

Yes, winning anything means you did good, but historical context and the VALUE of specific titles needs to be taken into consideration.

Yeah in your very biased opinion that is the truth, those kind of truths an argument based on reality does not stem from. Back to reality, Kimmie won all those events, and the only one that was even debated by anyone was the U.S Nationals. You are the first person I have heard say anything about 2007 Four Continents or 2007 Skate America.

A win isn't everything. Just like a silver isn't nothing. Michelle won the 1996 Worlds over a great performance from Lu Lu. Michelle had a great performance at the 1998 Olympics but won the silver medal. I happen to know for a fact that some of you in this debate think Michelle's silver is better then Sasha's 2006 one even though history reads that they received the same medal.

Sure you are comparing a silver medal to another silver medal, as opposed to a gold to a silver medal. I bet Shizuka would rather have the Olympic Gold in 2006 with the performance she gave, then have Michelle's performance but an Olympic silver instead like Michelle had in 1998, despite the fact Michelle's 1998 Olympic LP performance was "probably" better then Shizuka's 2006 Olympic LP performance. For an even more extreme example I bet Oksana would rather have the Olympic Gold medal in 1994 with the performances she gave, then have Michelle's 1998 performances but an Olympic Silver with those instead; despite the fact Michelle's 1998 Olympic performance were "definitely" better then Oksana's 1994 Olympic performances.

Likewise Lu Chen would probably rather have her 1995 World Championship performances and the gold medal with it, then her 1996 World Champions performances but a silver medal with them, despite the fact her 1996 World Championship performances were superior.

Sasha was the odds-on-favorite for the Calgary win. The use of 'crowned' had nothing to mean anything else. It was Cohen's competition to lose. She was going into the competition as the Oly silver medalist.

There was no injured Michelle, no Shizuka (Oly champion), no Irina, and no one even thought that Kimmie would even place. Fumie and others were high on the list including Elena Sokolova, but only as competitors - not favored to win.

Joe

Also keep in mind regarding Fumie going into the 2006 Worlds, Fumie at the 2006 Olympics had been placed a distant 4th when she was pretty clean, and when silver and bronze winners Sasha had 2 falls, and Irina had just a disaester all around- combining her major mistakes and her overall performance level (relative to her usual). Another reason to look at Sasha as heavy favorite for the 2006 World title.

and no one even thought that Kimmie would even place.

Well I thought she had a shot at maybe a bronze or something. Never considered her winning those Worlds though.

Remember she was 6th at the Olympics and with 1st and 3rd finishers out she was the 4th highest finisher from the Olympics at Worlds, and she didnt even have one of her best free skates at the Olympics.

Sasha was a favorite, but I didn't think she was going to win. It sounded like Sasha wasn't sure in interviews if she'd be attending Worlds, and to me that was well a red flag. Reports are that Sasha was having injuries and even in practices wasn't landing all of her jumps.. While I know Sasha had jump problems normally, her free skates at Worlds and Olympics were the worst free skates of her entire career.

The idea that Sasha wasn't sure about worlds, when her biggest comeptitos weren't there, told me that Sasha didn't necessarily think she was in condition to win Worlds...

I still think that people don't give Meissner enough credit.. She won with a huge technically demanding program and she actually stood up on her jumps.. It seems to me that the person the judges were going to let win worlds was Joannie Rochette, given the scores they gave her at the qualifying in Worlds. Apparently the ISU had said that Joannie's free skate was the second best at the Olympics, and the judges took it seriously.

But Joannie's response was literally to bomb the rest of the competition.... Given that Meissner did so well , I think is a good for her thing...

That's an interesting question. When skaters look back on their careers, do they count their medals, or do they (as do their fans) remember the great performances?

Does Michelle think, boy, I sure cleaned Sasha's clock at 2004 Nationals, ha, ha?

Or does she say, wow, I had 'em eating out of my hand with my Fields of Gold exhibition number?

Yeah, as I recall the general attitude was "If not Calgary, then never ...". She was fresh olympic silver medalist and neither of the two other medalists or her nationals nemesis were there. IINM the only competitors who'd ever placed above her (suguri, sokolova) hadn't done so since 2003.

I think she just didn't care that much about a world's title after the publicity crush of the olympics and as bekalc says, her 'maybe ...' attitude was a red flag that she wasn't in peak mental (let along physical) condition and her mental game has never been the strongest out there.

Meissner deserves all credit though for actually working an improving on her Turin showing. Yeah, it's easier to do when you weren't on the podium but it would have been easy to blow those worlds off. Instead, she really seemed to treat Turin as a _learning_ experience and was anxious to show what she'd learned.

Yeah, pretty sure a lot of people think Zhang should have won Skate America.

I'll have to look at the Four Continents results again but I do specifically remember Kimmie having a bad SP and not being properly downgraded on the 3-3 in the LP.
