Japanese Nationals 2005

In better news, the videos of the Ladies are starting to go up at the skating video site. Mao looked good to me (consistent with her other performances this season) with the exception of popping her axel into a single. I wonder if she was attempting a 3A? Does anyone know off the top of their head whether ladies are allowed to do a 3A in the short, or are they limited to a 2A? I'm thinking a 3A would be allowed but I'm not 100% sure.

No, only senior men are allowed to do 3A as the solo axel in the short program. Junior and senior ladies and junior men have to do 2A for that element, so if they want to include a 3A in the short it has to be in the combination (or, theoretically, the jump out of steps).

Thanks GKelly!! Me thinks whatever me thinks....that Mao might be stringing us along. She has apparent said again, that she will do 2 X 3A tomorrow. I realize that the LP is a different ballgame entirely, but we shall see.

Happy Holidays, and thanks for your information!!

Mao did do 2 3ax in the LP, one in combination with a 2 toe....and finished second, to Fumie! GOOOO FUMIE! :)

Fumie won and that makes me very happy as I like her. Mao second and Shizuka third (I'm also a Shiz fan). Oly team seems to be FS and SA plus Miki Ando even though she came in 6th at Nats. I think it should be Nakano at Olys as she beat Ando this time and has a better record this year. Some ppl at FSU think the placements at Japanese Nats were manipulated. Who knows but it certainly thickens the miso. Any, congrats Fumie!!!!!!!

And what happened to Oda is sad. I have not seen this guy skate but will today as GPF in on the telly.

Wish we could see these Nats as they sound great. I hope US Nats r the same.

Happy Holidays everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Remember, Japanese grade on a slightly less-strict version of CoP than ISU regs. Still - GREAT showing for both Fumie & Mao. I'm very pleased that, for the sake of the Olympics, anyone but Mao won. Still...

She sure did it!! WOW. Mao's LP is already up at the video site. Hopefully Shiz and Fumie and the others are coming. The depth of talent among the Japanese Ladies is just amazing. I'm so happy for Fumie. And it looks like Shiz is putting it together now too. I hope they both, along with Ando skate well at the Oly's.

No big surprise on the Men. It was one or the other.

The Ladies though, another story. Not too much distance between the scores.

Joe

Why are they putting Ando on the team over Nakano :scowl: ? Nakano beat Ando at GPF, Japanese Nationals, and NHK. The only time in the season that Ando placed higher was Cup of Russia. Miki's COR score was indeed much higher than Nakano's SC score, but that doesn't seem like enough to merit this kind of decision, taking into account all of the other meetings of the two. Does anyone else have any insight as to why they would choose Miki to make the team over Yukari?

Can someone post the top 6 of ladies and tell me who won the men? The link isn't working for me at the moment.

Ah I wanted Arakawa to win. But I'm so happy that Fumie had the skate of her life and won against Mao's two triple axels (WOW!). I guess there is hope yet that artistry and landing all of your jumps cleanly can win again a jumping bean.

It sounded like it was an exciting event. I don't expect US Nationals to be this good considering the talent in the US isn't as deep as Japan. But I do hope the Olympics is this exciting. Everyone will be there so it should be a great competition.

Takahashi won the Men's event. Oda was originally declared the winner, but then they adjusted a mistake in scoring - seems Oda got credit for a jump that was a Zayak violation if I understand correctly. I think the news article about it is linked up above in this thread.

Ladies:

Fumie
Mao
Shizuka
Onda
Nakano
Ando

(I think I got that right)

I too am a little  about the choice of Ando over Nakano for the Oly team. I enjoy watching Ando skate over Nakano (just my personal preference) but Nakano has clearly outskated Ando in head to head competition multiple times this season. Oh well....it's the Japan Feds decision to make.

Thanks DG. I'm surprised Onda beat Nakano and Ando! A little disappointed about Oda  but I do LOVE Takahashi too. So sad they only have one spot

I too, prefer to watch Ando's skating, and find Nakano's wrapped leg extremely distracting, but I just can't get my head around the fact that Nakano clearly outskated Ando this season. Oh well, I guess the Japanese feds know their skaters, and are sending who they think will produce the best results. I hope Miki skates as well as she can.

I wish the Japanese scoring system was more regular, so that we could compare some of these great performances to some of Slutskaya's this year, but because it is a national championship, which might result in inflated scores, and the adjusted system is in place, I don't think this is realistic. So happy for Fumie!

I was surprised about that too. Unless something new turned up, only Onda's SP was on the vid site out of the 3 mentioned. I did think Onda's SP looked better than what she was doing before. Hope video's of Ando and Nakano (for the LP's also) turn up eventually.

What sounds so cool about Japan Nationals is that the skates were really clean overall. (just a few minor mistakes here and there) I hope we get lucky with that level of solid competition for US Nationals!

The depth is absolutely unbelievable! I didn't watch her LP, but did you see Mai Asada's short program from the video site? It was clean, great flow out of jumps to boot, etc. and she placed 7th or 8th in the short program! I couldn't see that kind of performance not being in the top three in Canada, and definitely the top five in the US! I hope all of the skaters at American and Canadian Nationals skate to their full potential though!

I didn't download it before, but now I'm going to!! The depth is amazing, and I know I'm repeating myself but I'm still WOW over the general "cleanliness" of all the skating, from what little I've seen and what more I've read. Geez - the Japanese Ladies might just be deserving of their own montage!! ;)

Haha you're so subtle DG ;). I'll see what I can do! Haha I do have lots of time on my hands now that exams are done and I'm on Christmas vacation. I did have to recently clean out my video library, but I've gotten plenty more since then haha, and I'm sure with the help of a few people on the vids site I could get some great stuff together. I can't promise anything but I'll see what I can do! :) Do you have any suggestions for music to set it to?

Thrilled For Fumie

I am absolutely thrilled for Fumie. She is one of my favorite skaters and a sweetheart in the bargain. I couldn't be happier for her. I am so glad they gave her great scores for presentation/artistry. I love Shiz as well.

 Of course I do not have a good music selection. But you always do GREAT with that part of it, so we'll just have to trust you. Hey...all kidding aside. Enjoy your break from school doing whatever pleases you. If that's making a new montage, great!! But if it's something else, enjoy!!

I'm starting to collect vids already :) Still puzzled over the song choice though.

For those who aren't members of the vids site, [BTW: I strongly encourage it; it's an amazing resource!] here are some vids from Japanese Nats:

Nobunari Oda SP
Kensuke Nakaniwa SP
Mai Asada SP and LP
Mao Asada SP and LP
Fumie Suguri SP and LP
Shizuka Arakawa SP (sorry no LP available at the moment)
Yoshie Onda SP (again sorry no LP)

No Miki or Yukari vids at this point.
