Jason Brown

... I can't think of any male skater who probably has naturally dark brown hair.

I can ;).

Brown/black: Max Aaron, Boitano, Colin McManus, Chris Knierim, Luca Lanotte, Ben Agosto, Javi, Lysacek ...

Dark brown, but not black: Scott Moir, Liam Firus, Josh Farris, Zach Donohue, Quinn Carpenter, ...

Samohin, Pitkeev, Aliev ....

Must be many others.

Huh. I wrote out a whole post that was apparently swallowed up by the great god internet.

Skaters with naturally dark hair: Max Aaron, Evan Lysacek

Jason's coloring without hair dye = his moms = sandy brownish hair with reddish undertones and skin with kind of ruddy (as opposed to olive) undertones. He is probably what Color Me Beautiful used to call an Autumn. Even with his natural coloring he pulls off black pretty well, but I think the dark hair makes it even more flattering - it works with the high contrast between his skin / hair.

What he should never ever wear again: that baby blue he had for Liebestraume - it totally washed him out.

I stand corrected - BY A LOT. I guess I considered a lot of those skaters to have a more medium brown shade of hair. I will admit to giving you a thumbs up only because I used it as an excuse to Google to check pictures. But only to study the color of some of them's wavy brown hair, of course. ;)

--------------------------------------------

Back to Jason's hair, I guess because Jason has "set: his image, he is "stuck" with that ponytail until he retires. I believe it was because his hair was originally too frizzy, correct? If that is the case, if he were to cut it, it would have to be WAY short. There's not a lot of options there if he can't at least grow it out some on top.

Eye of the beholder ;) ... but I think for at least a few of these handsome gents, the darkness seems unequivocal to me.
Poje and Bartholomay are two more, if you want to add them to your purely academic  perusal of their photographs.

As for Jason, he wore that other style for Tristan with the braids holding his hair back -- which I liked. (Don't know what you call that style.)

I've just read that the Team Challenge Cup teams are going to be picked on January 1, and if I understand the selection process correctly, Jason must be one of the team since he is the top male American singles skater in the standings? The others would be the top Canadian, which is currently Nam Nguyen, and a third fan pick. Can anyone confirm if I'm right or wrong? I mean there doesn't seem to be a chance anyone can pass him in the standings by Jan 1?

What? How can Jason be the top American man? You know how I adore him, but there is no question who the best man in the US is at the moment, and it's not him.

I have to confess it: I don't like the darker hair. It makes his hair look even greasier and unwashed with the amount of product he has to use, and it pales out his skin even further. Also, I have issues with the way Jason's quotes were worded...it almost sounds like it wasn't something he wanted, wasn't really his choice. And Rohene is a fabulous choreographer, but it's niggled at me for some time now...he's not you, Rohene. He'll never be you.

Anyway, Jason's tweets are so upbeat and cute it's impossible not to smile. I'm sure he'll be blazing on all cylinders come Nationals!

That's interesting. How are they going to go about the fan pick?

I noticed this USFSA post on FB.
There's also this link to an explanation of the athlete selection process.

The selection process as explained there:

ISU World Standings (as of January 1, 2016) will be used to determine the 2016 Team Challenge Cup field of competitors. The top two singles skaters (ladies and men) and top two pairs and ice dance teams from each continent will be invited to participate at the 2016 Team Challenge Cup.

*The top two invited athletes/teams may not be from the same country.

The final singles athletes (ladies and men) for each team will be determined by a fan vote. Up to five skaters (both ladies and men) will be nominated by the Team Captains from those skaters who are entered in the 2016 ISU World Figure Skating Championships. Online fan voting will begin immediately following the announcement of the Captain’s Picks and will conclude one week after the 2016 World Championships. The top male and female vote getters from each continent will be invited to compete.

Max Aaron leads in the Season's World Rankings, but that's not what the selection is based on. Which I'm sure we will be reminded of countless times on Twitter and elsewhere come spring ("Why is Jason Brown going? He's not nearly as good as Max or Adam? The selections should be rankings not standings! It's all just USFSA politicks, I tell you, POLITICKS!!!") etc. etc. :palmf:

American men in the World Standings are:

Jason Brown 5th
Adam Rippon 10th
Max Aaron 12th

This is assuming that the Standings are up to date - if they aren't, Adam and Max could still climb up. But I'm not sure if they could overtake Jason in any case?

Max and Adam are 1-2 in the Season's World Ranking - of all men, not just Americans.

But Max may still get to go, if he wins the fan vote.

The ISU season rankings and world rankings are up to date. The reason both Max and Adam are at the top of the seasons rankings right now is because they both did relatively well in their two Grand Prix and two challenger comps. Hanyu and others are lower because they didn't compete in the Challenger series and Jason is lower because he withdrew from NHK. But since GPF points range from about 400-800 points, most of the GPF finalists will move ahead of Max and Adam next week. Jason will also drop. Next year he may also drop in world standings relative to Max and Adam if he isn't sent to 4CCs and Worlds or if he places lower than one/both of them at those comps.

I guess it's all in the eye of the beholder but I don't think Jason's hair looks greasy nor do I think he looks washed out. But then, I have very dark straight hair and relatively light olive skin. I don't use much product, but dark hair does reflect light more especially when it's straight.

ETA unless Patrick bombs at the GPF I expect he may challenge Max for fan votes...

Thank you for confirming this :)

Since there's only 3 weeks and change left until selection day, I think we can safely say that barring injury, Jason will be at the Challenge Cup.

If his current injury means that he's left off the Worlds team, I'm happy he has this chance to compete in the spring in any case :)

And Jason started this season well ahead of Max in the world standings b/c Max was not on last season's teams for Four Continents and Worlds.

ETA (on Dec 12), correction and apology:

After the GPF, Nam remains the top Canadian man in the world standings.
Please ignore what I said below about Patrick prob. overtaking Nam because of the GPF.
I forgot that only two comps from the GP series (including the GPF) count toward the world standings.

Patrick has a good chance of earning a spot at TCC outright.
The GPF will move Patrick up to #1 among Canadian men in the world standings -- unless he places sixth in Barcelona.

Thoughts on Captain's Picks scenarios:
Up to five skaters (both ladies and men) will be nominated by the Team Captains from those skaters who are entered in the 2016 ISU World Figure Skating Championships.

Canada has only two slots at Worlds, so chances are that only one Canadian man (Nam or Patrick) can be among the Captain's Picks nominees.

Kristi Yamaguchi is the Captain for Team North America.
It would be within the rules for her to nominate only one U.S. man -- so as not to split the U.S. fan vote btwn Max and Adam, for example.

OTOH, maybe Kristi would not want to take sides btwn the two countries.
And I'm oversimplifying for the sake of argument. I know that some American fans will want to give their votes to Patrick or Nam ... and I hope that Canadian fans will give some votes to the U.S. pick(s).

I am not sure Jason wants to make these choices.

I actually agree there is something.... interesting about some of the quotes. But it is also similar to stuff we have heard from Kori. For instance i found her using the phase "Put the gray pants on him" with regard to replacing the mustard ones rather than "have him put the gray pants on" It is a different connotation that could be read into to reflect Jason's involvement. Given that both seem to give the impression Jason has turned over the reigns... i just accept that this is how Jason likes it and what works for him. Still, I get your point... every now and then i do scratch my head with bemusement.

And i am not going to worry tooo much about Rohene turning Jason into him until Jason starts showing up in those killer nails of his and wearing stilettos.

Regarding Jason and Rohene:

OTOH, another little window into their relationship was that old interview (I don't remember which one) in which Jason talked about experimenting with coming up with his own bits of choreo when he is practicing Rohene's program when Rohene is not around.

But ... when watching Jason later, Rohene has been quick to ask, "Where did that come from? Who changed the choreo?"
And Jason has only vaguely replied, "Oh, I don't know ..."

ETA:
Of course, Jason was chuckling as he recounted all of this in the interview. I don't want anyone to think that he was griping about Rohene.

Now that Jason is an adult, I imagine that he will continue to test the boundaries -- and perhaps will want to have more of a creative voice in his own skating. At the same time that he relies on Rohene and Kori.

@Golden411 - I referenced factors influencing the current season ranking because I couldn't understand how Max and Adam could both rank higher than Yuzu, Javi, etc., not to diss Max or Adam. I didn't think the world standings were in question.

Yikes ... Tavi, I have no idea what your comment and tone are overreacting to.

I never said that you were showing disrespect to Max or Adam -- because I never for one second thought that you were.

I never said that the world standings were in question -- because I never for one second thought that they were.

You made a reference to world standings, and so did I. What is the big deal?

I innocently was trying to add one more layer to the explanation that TMC and you gave as to why it makes sense for Jason to be the top U.S. man in the world standings.

Reminder to self:
Think at least twice before attempting to contribute anything positive to this thread ... you never know when you're going to rile up a hypersensitive Brownzilla.

Golden, perhaps I misunderstood you. If so I apologize. You also seem to have misunderstood me, and I guess that happens from time to time when people don't see each other face to face. Lets chalk it up to mutual misunderstanding. One favor though: please don't ever call me a Brownzilla - I absolutely loathe the word and much as I love Jason, don't consider myself a rabid fan.

Whoa.....Brownzilla...that name sounds so messed up....

Brownzilla has a long -- and mostly light-hearted -- history in this thread.

The term originated before you joined GS, so I imagine that you do not know the full context.

You're probably correct. It's just the name sounds a bit atrocious. Like a monster. Well Godzilla was a monster and I'm guessing that's where it came from. But still it sounds...too much like a monster.

But I would like to hear the history though.

I guess you have never heard of Bridezillas. Groomzillas. And other humorous usages of -zilla that are out there in the wider world.

Thumbnail summary of the history of "Brownzilla" (what I remember):

Way back when, someone in the thread lightheartedly starting referring to herself as a "nosy auntie" re Jason. In a humorous, self-deprecating way.

That term caught on a bit, and several others in the thread started using it. Again, in a humorous, self-deprecating way.

Then someone in the thread suggested that we come up with a nickname for ourselves -- something more Jason-specific than "nosy auntie." Again, in a humorous, self-deprecating way.

"Brownzilla" was one of a number of suggestions from assorted members. The term caught on to some extent, and several started using it. Again, in a humorous, self-deprecating way.

ETA:

The term "nosy auntie" itself has a history outside of this thread, according to the person who first used the term -- again, in a humorous, self-deprecating way -- within this thread.

But I do not remember that history.

The "auntie" part was appropriate for some of us who are older than Jason -- esp. for those of us who are old enough to be his auntie.
