Jason Brown

The thing is, Boyang's FS at TCC was an anomaly - he fell on everything and scored under 160 if I recall. Shoma's FS score at Lombardia was also low because he left out a couple of combos - compare the protocols to TCC and Japan Open, where his BV, TES, PCS and total score were much higher. So I'm not sure Lombardia is a good measuring stick. At Japan Open, Shoma scored 198 in the FS; that may have been inflated, but I still think he will score higher at Skate America than he did at Lombardia (assuming he's clean). Which is my long winded way of saying that a 270 FS from Jason would be fantastic, but still may not be enough to beat a clean Shoma or Boyang.
I don't want to say this as some kind of bashing but I think Shoma is questionable, he did well in commercial events which I do not count it as serious competition with huge pressure which can affect you mentally and physically. Did he do well in most pressure events? I haven't seen. Boyang has jetlag issue and his PCS and GOE still need quite a lot of improvement.

Jason, in my opinion, has done quite well several times under pressure. In my opinion Jason still has good chance to win if he lands everything well. With the level of tech Jason is doing, I think he is competitive enough.

There is a big difference between "Could win" and "will win" or "Is expected to win" or "Probably will win"

I would say that Hanyu at NHK saying things like is expected to win/probably will win is reasonable.

I would also say Hanyu or Chan will likely win Skate Canada.

I don't think Skate America has a clear favorite or "probably will win" skater. Shoma is a bit unpredictable... not as bad as some, but enough that I am not sure I am comfortable calling him a favorite. Boyang we have not even seen this season, it is hard for me to see a skater we have not seen yet as a favorite. Could they win/beat Jason... of course. But Jason could also beat them.

I think that Boyang, Shoma and Jason are likely the podium favorites, but any attempt to put them in order to me is right now just a guessing game.

So I still think Jason could win. Yes other skaters could have a moment and beat him, but that is always true.

I am not expecting Jason to win, but I also would not find it surprising if he does win. To me he is a real contender this year.

Just for fun, stats on face-offs at SA (I didn't include TCC because it was not a traditional competition)

Shoma: 2/5. Those two time were all from Junior Worlds in 2012 and 2013. Jason has yet to beat Shoma in their senior faceoffs: 4CC 2015, SA 2015 and Lombardia
Boyang 1/2. Besides TCC, they have never faced off at the senior level. Their face-offs date back to the 2012-2013 season. Boyang beat him at JGP Courchavel, but Jason bested him at Jr. Worlds later that senior.
Voronov: 2/3. All their faceoffs were in the 2014-2015 season. Voronov beat him at Rostelecom Cup, Jason beat him at Nebelhorn and Worlds.
Kovtun: 2/3. Only senior faceoff was at 2015 Worlds, where Jason was 4th and Kovtun was 7th. They faced each other at two JGPFs: Jason won in 2011, Kovtun won in 2012.
Nguyen: 7/7 They were basically at the same comps in 2012-2013 junior season (JGP Courchavel/Istanbul + Junior Worlds). As seniors they were at Skate America, Worlds 2015 and 4CC. Incidently while Jason beat Nam at SA and Worlds, Nam did beat Jason in the FS at those two competitions.
Murakami: 0/1 Only faceoff was at 2015 4CC, where Murakami placed 4th (Jason 6th).
Ten: 3/6 You can guess where those two of those wins were from: Skate America 2014, 2015. The other was from Jr. Worlds in 2012. But Ten has beat him at the big events: Olympics, 4CC and Worlds.
Rippon: 5/9. Adam has a slight edge on nationals faceoff (3/5) but Jason has beat him in the last two. Adam beat him at SA 2013, but Jason beat him at 4CC, Worlds and SLC Classic.

I really enjoy Jason's skating, but I think 3rd is about the best he can do at this event. Hope I'm wrong!

The thing is, ice is slippery. Remember everyone thought Shoma would win last year - but Max came and snatched it off him simply by staying on his feet?

Jason can do the same. Rack up that high TES with his gorgeous execution, maybe stand up on a quad, and he could spring one heck of a surprise on the others.

I'm up for a Jason, Shoma, Brendan podium. Because why stop at one surprise when you could have two?

On Team USA's Instagram Stories today, there are a bunch of stories/videos of Jason and some other athletes making some Lobster Pad Thai in the OTC kitchen. Yum! :)

Okay - you guys all know Jason is my absolute favorite and of course I'd love him to win! I'm pessimistic :drama: (or realistic ;)) because of the 4F and the 4Z, but I know he has been working really hard and with focus, so I'm looking forward to Thursday practice (only a week!) and keeping my fingers crossed for two clean beautiful programs in the competition. Work has been super busy so I hope it doesn't keep me from practice!

So for those of you who haven't heard the latest TSL (Finlandia), we learn that Jason stays with Gracie's family in LA and that La thinks he should get a keratin treatment or Brazilian blow out instead of using mousse.

And slightly OT but Angela Wang withdrew from Skate America (ankle) and Mariah will be there instead. Since Ashley and Adam are also there I'm assuming Raf will put her on the ice. Hmmm.

La going off on Jason's beanie in the summer was pretty darn cute.

As much as we joke about Rohene doing Jason's hair, it looked worse when he got it dyed by someone else.... so i would be scared his hair would stump even the best Keratin Treatment Brazilian Blowout expert.

Oh no Brazilian blow out:noshake: I've seen what goes into "straightening" hair like Jason's, and I don't like lt, don't like it, don't like it, I'd rather see the "bro cap".

And tangentially related, now that Adam has ditched that caterwauling excuse for music that constituted his free, no more dueling "Pianos" at SA:laugh:

Seems this interview is newly published today? Although it took place in SLC.

U.S. International Classic: Chat with Jason Brown

Jason's media call is up

http://web.icenetwork.com/video/v1206277283/?query=media%2Bteleconference%2Bprior%2Bto%2B2016%2BSkate%2BAmerica

Im part way in, but he sounds way more relaxed than usual. He also said he likely will try some 4S at SA...good sign!

Thx, Stitch. Enjoyed listening to the media call.
One of my favorite parts was when Jason answered the question about how many  family members and friends will attend Skate America.

Good luck to Jason, Adam, and Tim in the coming week :yay:.
(And to many others :ghug:.)

Enjoying both the article and the media call, although they (somewhat naturally) say much of the same....

including that the SP was changed due to Champs Camp feedback (and a Kori push); I guess between this and Mariah, Rohene feels better about the lyrics in singles skating/;)

Thank you for posting the link. I really enjoyed the call. He was so funny when he was talking about how many of his fans would be there. Also am so happy to hear that he is continuing his relationship with the Ronald McDonald House. Good luck Jason!

el henry, thx for flagging the new site from USFS.

I hope you don't mind that I quoted your post in the U.S. men's thread.

I added some more video links over there, including this other one for Jason:

- What do you want people to get out of your skating?

Thanks, @ice coverage. I saw that the file name for the video I watched was "JasonBrown2" and was wondering if "JasonBrown1" existed. Now I know;)

WOOHOO!!! Only three sleeps :hap93:

I find it funny how low many people are placing Jason in the predictions thread...Some have him outside the top 6. I remember when lots of people had him outside the top 10 at Worlds 2015, and did he show them

I believe a podium position is very feasible.

Me too re excitement and Jason's medal potential! I will be at practice tomorrow, so I will try to report on what I see from the guys, at least - I can't promise it will be in real time, but I'll try to do it sooner rather than later, and I promise to pay attention to all the guys, not just Jason.

As to the predictions, yeah I have raised my eyebrows at a few, but I do think this is an exceptionally difficult field to predict. To me it really says something when D10's withdrawal doesn't clarify much!

My strongest wishes for Jason are that he stays healthy, lands a clean 4T in at least one program (preferably both!), that he skates to the best of his ability both days, and that we see at least one clean 4S in practice!

Oh you are so lucky to be going! Hope you have a great time, and I hope Jason skates well for your sake, podium or no podium :)
