Jason Brown

Possibly, too, he felt slightly intimidated by all the quad fire-power surrounding him at this event... he may have felt he was an unknown quantity going into the short. This is the first time he has faced this group with anything close to a quad. Now he is solidly in the mix, earning his spot, can measure his ability against the other competitors in real time, so can evaluate, assess, what is possible, probable for him in this group... he still got the 2nd highest PCS score, well deserved, and can build from there. He does this so well
Hoping against hope for a wonderful FS from him!! And, if not, I still LOVE watching him skate!

Hmm. I would be surprised if he was intimidated by top level skaters with lots of quads - he's faced them many times before, most recently at SA. I actually see this as more akin to his FS at the Olympics, after a brilliant SP unexpectedly put him within striking distance of bronze.

A month ago, he was doing pretty well, but he was still that guy who hadn't yet landed a quad. Then at SA he not only landed one, but skated the rest of the program brilliantly and earned a very, very high score. And suddenly he was being talked about as a real contender. Pretty much everyone has been expecting him to take silver at NHK and qualify for the GPF. And I'm willing to bet that those expectations are coming from USFS as well as media and fans.

The good thing - and what's different from the Olympics - is that he still has a chance to come back in the FS.

Hopefully he'll right the ship tomorrow and we'll see a gorgeous FS.

Yes! That is exactly it... I totally agree with the reference to the Olympics. He was smiling when he left the ice but for a brief instant you could see the disappointment register. Kori was great in his corner as usual... he was nodding to something she said and the smile brightened. Good Luck tomorrow Jason!! :hap10:

This is it! I was thinking that this performance reminded me of some other performance, and yes it was the Sochi FS all over again - URs and jump landing issues all over the place. That one was definitely nerves - and he was in a similar situation in that he had (very surprisingly) done well enough that the bronze was within reach (here the GPF) so the pressure got a bit too much.

I wonder if they anticipated that this could happen and planned for it, or if he was just blindsided by nerves once he got there. In any case, he did the best he could today, and that's all anyone can ask.

I don't know, he looked a bit nonplussed throughout the SP, almost like he couldn't believe what was going on. A bit lost. Like it came as a surprise to him, too. He mentioned in that one interview that the Sochi FS had caused him many sleepless nights. Hopefully he can have a redemption skate tomorrow and put all that behind him! Like you said, this time it's different because he has that chance to redeem himself, unlike Sochi.

Really sad at how Jasons SP went, but I'm still optimistic he'll be better tomorrow and climb up in the rankings. Even if it was nerves, for a lot of Skaters after a bad SP the fighter comes out and they come back roaring in the LP. And Jason is usually such a strong competitor! (Dang, I really had to force my auto correct not to write computer  )
The GPF is still within reach. I'm gonna keep all my fingers crossed! :cheer:

And TMC, I only read it, but a late Happy Birthday from me too! :)

I'm actually starting to wonder if jet lag contributed. He started off so well but faded as time went on, to the point where some stuff was just perfunctory.

Anyway. Here's hoping for a beautiful skate tomorrow!

I can only imagine how difficult it is to get the timing and fluidity right when you're nervous. As I was watching the SP live, I almost couldn't believe it was happening. I have every hope that he'll bring that fighting spirit of his back in the FS. Hope all of his fans who are there will be cheering extra loudly. Sending good vibes...

I actually thought he looked overexcited. Did you see the grin on his face right as he got into start position? At first it looked like he was feeding off the crowd, then it started to look a little much. I did notice that he got the most cheers of anyone (including Tanaka) in that first group and I wonder if he just absorbed a bit much of it, like having too much sugar and then crashing.

Jason! My heart broke:cry:. it was just not his day. Never give up Jason. He still have the enough chance for the podium. Look at the audience. He failed the jumps though, they gave huge applause to him shaving national flag. I realized how his skating and character are really loved by people. I expect you will show the excellent fs before his fans! Go! :hap10:

by his fan. "tomorrow is another day!"

For those who haven't seen it yet, here is Jason's FS from NHK. It's hard to say what happened to him - a loss of confidence, perhaps. Comparing it to his gorgeous performance at SA (second link), what I notice most is that his timing is off even on simple steps and arm movements. So it's not surprising that he also had trouble with his jumps. It's too bad we won't see him at GPF, and I do worry a bit about his competitive confidence, but with his positive spirit, I know he'll learn from this experience and eventually rise above it.

My heart broke for him this morning but reminded myself Jason has bounced back from bad days throughout his career so I expect this will be no different. But am glad the quad is here to stay for him now... no going back to quad less programs and to me that is a positive. He' s a fighter and has a cheerful healthy mindset. He will no doubt work even harder to perfect and master jump technique... he does not give up. Nationals will be interesting for sure so onward and upward. Must also say any chance to see Jason skate is a great day for me!!!!! :luv17:

Is there any news that Jason might have been injured?

There isn't. One hopes that isn't the case. My hope is that whatever it was it was something temporary -- i.e. sickness or a sprain -- that played havoc with his jumps.

That FS is the lowest free skate score in his entire senior career. Only his debut FS at Nebelhorn Trophy 2013 was even slightly close. http://www.isuresults.com/results/nt2013/SEG002.HTM

It will be interesting to see if Jason will be assigned to Golden Spin of Zagrab. Adam Rippon was originally entered for that competition, but obviously he'll be at GPF instead. USFSA hasn't officially announced assignments for that competition, which tells me they were waiting for GP results.

He isn't listed as a substitute, but Ashley Wagner was not either and was later listed.

I haven't noticed anything. Also, last year he only revealed that he was injured when he had to withdraw from NHK, and then it turned out he had been less than 100% for ages and just never mentioned it.

Well he was listed for the exhibition. So either he is not injured or well I fear i am too cynical to finish that sentence... but i don't think doing exhibitions when injured is a good idea.

...an injury would have at least made sense.
