I guess, but if you go back to the first video in this series (from September, about his summer and move to Toronto) it’s completely different in style and presentation - and it’s seemingly made for a different audience. The first video was very much in the style of his own YouTube videos - a montage that he himself put together, with a brief introduction by him, speaking directly into the camera. It’s goofy, but very personal.

This one is much more formal and “scripted,” and as you noted, seems less directed to his fans and more to a general audience. Since it’s on the FanZone and not his personal YouTube channel, I can see why USFS might want to do that, but it seems to me like something was lost in translation - for example, unless you watch the first video, you wouldn’t know that he’d made a coaching change this year and is now training in Toronto, and the clip with Brian/Tracy could confuse a casual fan who’s only ever seen him at Nats with Kori. Also, some of the questions - e.g., about the difficulty of learning choreo at galas and how Team USA did on the GP this season - seem really random and impersonal.

I’m wondering if the change in style may also be a choice to present a new, “adult” Jason to general audiences (more in line with the “serious business” Jason we are starting to see in competition). If so, I don’t think it’s a bad idea - I just don’t think this particular format / content was very successful - at least for me. I did think his comment that this season he’d learned about “the power of focus” was really interesting. Since it seems to have been a factor in his late season (and hopefully future) success, I hope that at some point, someone will ask him about that in more detail.

Of course while I was writing this he goes and releases a goofy Brown Family Happy New Year Dance Video which may undercut my theory of the more adult Jason, but oh well... :)

And i just don’t find that the “walk and talk interview” works as it is done here. I was way too distracted by the crunching gravel. I guess I’m easily distracted :biggrin:

Either do it completely professionally à la West Wing (and I know USFS does not have the funds to hire Aaron Sorkin as a scriptwriter or Tommy Schlamme as a director anytime soon) or find a less dizzying way to engage the interest, IMO.

But hey, they have me, so I’m not the target audience;)

I admit to watching his feet carefully in that video to look for any lingering signs of an injury. :)

Jason is so lucky to be close to his family and to have a family that appears to enjoy spending time together. Coming from a family whose extended members live far apart and successfully avoid spending time together, I'm a little jealous.
 
I did not love every part of the video. My least favorite things, neither of which was Jason's fault:

The utter fakeness of, "Do you mind if we ask you eighteen questions?" (A frequent artifice in USFS videos, much to my dismay.)

The first part of the gala answer -- something like, "We all come prepared with our own individual exhibition numbers." It did feel scripted/boring and unnecessary.​

Agree that the new video is less personal than the first one of the season. But regarding those two particular questions:

Not criticizing Jason, but I was surprised that he did not have a lot more fun with the question/answer about learning the group numbers. I could swear that in past interviews, we have heard really hearty self-deprecating laughter from him over the difficulty of quickly mastering the group choreo (with a mention that learning choreo in general can take time for him) -- along with really exuberant appreciation for the cameraderie of group numbers and for the chance to entertain the crowd. Definitely less oomph from Jason this time, for whatever reason.

It is a USFS video after all, and for me, the Team USA results question aligned with Jason's sincere love of being a super-cheerleader for his teammates.
Plus it created a natural opportunity for him to mildly toot his own horn in a low-key way without any tone of bragging or arrogance.​

It was by no means the most effective or pleasing walk-and-talk in the history of the universe. If it didn't work for you, it didn't work for you.

But the format is not brain surgery. It existed long before West Wing, and can be (and has been) well executed on a routine basis by local news crews that do not include the likes of Sorkin or Schlamme.

As I said, my glass-half-full response to the usage here is that Jason got some new experience in video production that perhaps will come in handy in future on a bigger platform than USFS FanZone.

My ears did not mind the nat sound of the gravel, which for me added to the sense of, "Hey, I'm on a ranch :cool:."
Certainly room for improvement in the blocking of the walking, but it did not make me dizzy.

YMMV.

I also found the editing of the video very distracting. For me, it was the walking combined with the frequent cuts to other things (like skating, or his parents miming tennis). Also, the walk wasn't cohesive. Some shots were fairly continuous (except for the interrupting vignettes), but a few times he jumped from place to place from one question to the next. For example, he was on a trail and then suddenly he was in a place with a lot of picnic tables.

The lack of continuity, plus the interruptions, was just too much for me. But I'm probably not the target audience; I didn't grow up on music videos with a cut every 3 seconds.
 
does anyone know if jason's 2017 FS inner love soundtrack is on spotify? i can't seem to find it anywhere and it's really growing on me

The music was composed specifically for Jason's LP by Maxime Rodriquez. I don't know if Maxime ever released it.

Then again, I don't have a spotify account or a pandora or any of that, so :slink:

I notice Google translate gives many of the replies as “Happy Birthday”, I’m assuming the characters for Happy Birthday are similar to Happy New Year. And not that Jason left a coded message about his birthday :biggrin:

Not many skaters learn Japanese so that they can talk to their Japanese fans. Jason and Sean Rabbitt are the only two I know about. Are there others? I know that the Japanese fans appreciate it. I have a friend who lived in Japan for 15 years and had her watch one of Jason's earlier Japanese videos. She said that he spoke well, but that his delivery was very similar to Japanese Game Show hosts or announcers on television. It's a style of speaking. That may be what the comment above, about where he puts the emphasis when he speaks, is referring to.

Kevin Reynolds is another who learned Japanese -- although I do not know whether his only motivation was talking to his Japanese fans. (BTW, same for Jason and Sean, IMO.)

I think Kevin did/does have a natural affinity for all things Japanese: language, culture, etc. :cool:

Jason has said that he learned Japanese so that he could talk to his Japanese fans. He also seems to get friendly with Japanese skaters. He has said in the past that he'd like to teach English to Japanese children when he stops competing. But I don't know if he still has that in mind. He hasn't mentioned it for a while.
 
Gotta give it to Jason for going extra for his fans.
I am sure if he can he will try to learn a snippet of every language just to show how he appreciates everyone.

I think he's learning some Russian from Evgenia. Maybe he can learn some Spanish this week from Javi.
 
Anyone besides Karne going to be at 4CCs? I have to be in LA the following week on business and am trying to arrange it so I can arrive in time to see men’s FS!
