Jason Brown

@Bookseller, @el henry, thanks for info and link to article where he mentioned Champs Camp. It sounds like he had tech problems a la ACI, but I would guess that some people may also have had reactions to the FS not too dissimilar to mine when I first saw it: hunh??!!!! Anyway, hopefully his results at his last two comps set USFS’s mind a bit more at ease - like he’s starting to meet their expectations. :)

I think I’ve said this before, but to me Jason looked really young for his age until maybe two years ago? It’s been a gradual metamorphosis from kid with soft facial contours and light frame with narrow shoulders to young man with strong facial features, muscular frame & broadish shoulders, but it’s quite striking if you compare current pictures to ones from 2014. In that recent picture from TCC, he looks a bit like Javi in body type now - and since Javi has a great 4S, maybe that bodes well for Jason’s....

I noticed that he went from a gawky, but cute kid to a handsome young man, about the time the pony tail started getting shorter. And the transition to TCC changed his posture and the contours of his body. If those changes make a quad (or two!) possible, it will be a landmark achievement for both Jason and TCC.

Jason is listed for the 2019 Stars on Ice tour, but it says he won't be at all shows. https://www.starsonice.com/the-skaters.html

Thanks, need a few more specifics of course.

And hoping against hope a certain arena is put on the schedule last minute ;)

I’m sure almost everyone here saw the Team USA article with all the quotes that have been posted elsewhere. But I will admit, I like as one of the newish ones about we (meaning I’m sure Millie, mom and dad and Jordan) didn’t listen to you crying the blues for a month so you could doubt your move to Canada. Just do it!

And they were right.....

Jason won't be skating all cities. The tour is a lot shorter than last year, so far. I guess contracts have not all been signed yet. I enjoyed last year's show a lot!

Me too; and the company as well;)

We’ll just have to see where Jason lands:biggrin:

Thanks Katmari! Wow, I’m surprised to be saying this, but I kind of had a hard time listening to some of that. Am I nuts? There were chunks of it where he opened up and seemed like his normal self in interviews, but in some places he seemed less than relaxed and even a bit reticent. Guarded might be too strong a word, but some of his answers seemed...short or not very clear. I don’t suppose the inherent awkwardness of conference calls helped, but I came away without a strong sense of what he was working on, what changes they’ve made, what the story is with his quads, and what the chances are he’ll actually try one at Nats.

I think some of that probably came from his frustration with being asked about the quad over and over and the inevitability that someone would. He likely doesn’t want to say too much about it because he doesn’t want this expectation that he will suddenly have a perfect and consistent quad. It’s about the process.

I just finished listening and plan to listen again. I had a hard time understanding all that he said about the Champs Camp experience. The audio quality was not the best. He definitely chose not to discuss the quad other than to say that it was planned and he's working on it, but that they are in no hurry. I felt that overall he seemed positive and happy and professional. Gone is the giddy kid. He answered in an adult fashion, with glimpses of the ebullient Jason occasionally breaking through. He clarified his coaching team and what he works on with them. That has been a matter of some speculation until now. In describing this to someone else, I almost used the word guarded, but it was more that he was quieter and more adult. It's a fairly long interview and he did answer most things fully, but he didn't address technique change and kept the quad info to a minimum. I'm glad that we got to hear the whole thing. There was more information in it than we had be told previously. But I would say that TCC (probably mostly Tracy) has been working with him on media interaction and that he demonstrated that in these interviews. He and Tracy do seem to have a great rapport.

A couple of thoughts on the media call from listening once just before going to sleep.

- I think the recent ankle injury may be having more of an impact than we thought. There was something he said when asked about this, just a phrase thrown in there, that made me think there may be more to it than they wanted to divulge. If so, that could be a reason for not being more concrete about what to expect at Nats.

- The Champs Camp comment was weird and I really do need to re-listen to this. Did he say he went there with a choreographed long program and the comments he got were along the lines of, Where are all these moves that you do so well? And his then his ?current team? was like, You can do all these things? I'm definitely scratching my head if that's what he said, because how can a new coaching team not be aware of what you are capable of doing? Or maybe I misunderstood this part.

No disrespect intended, but I've never thought J was the best extemporaneous speaker and he definitely seemed nervous, especially in the beginning when he didn't seem to understand a couple of the questions. He seemed to be having a hard time focusing.

ETA: SOI has updated it's page. Jason is scheduled for Ft Myers, St. Paul, Chicago, and Bloomington. He appears to be doing the shows that Nathan is not doing.

I agree with Bookseller. I think it’s more that he’s probably abiding by TCC skaters’ approach to the media. I don’t think the questions asked didn’t allow for ellaboration. “Are you still working on the quad?” Well, yep. Lol. Phil did follow up and basically said he would try it but he also isn’t going to pin his nationals prospects on it.

I think the Champs Camp example is more an illustration that he wanted to let his coaching/choreography team put their input and get a feel of what they’re doing before trying to impose what he did previously. I find it strange too that nobody realized he had these signature items, since we know Brian watched the sp, but maybe it’s more they thought it was Rohene who wanted those things, who knows. He talked a lot about building communication and rapport and I think he probably still at the time was figuring that out.

I don’t think the ankle injury was a big thing and he said so. He still won Golden Spin in spite of it, so I’m not too worried about that.

Jason has said several times that one of the things he wanted and got at TCC, is that Brian and Tracy really didn't know anything about him and his skating. He wanted fresh eyes. I think that was true of Brian, but not sure it was true of Tracy. However, it was certainly true of David. Jason was committed to letting them redefine him, and when he agreed to try the FS program, that was all part of the redefinition business. But at Champs Camp, they apparently strongly weren't sold on the FS and wanted more Jason. That did seem to be what he was saying during the interview. And honestly, I think the judges at Champs Camp were right. The more of Jason that goes into the FS and the more of Jason that comes out in the FS, the better it gets.

Brian is discovering what Jason can do. And Tracy has talked about how that split jump comes out of nowhere. These things are interesting and exciting to them. So they are all in a discovery process and I think that is a good thing. Jason went from a place where everything was known, and comfortable and while his own competitive drive pushed him forward (not to mention Rohene's choreography) he needed a change of venue, outlook, technique and as he said "fresh eyes." Brian saw the SP once, liked it and that was that. I think the next time Brian watched that SP was at IdF. And I think Brian's attitude toward Jason changed dramatically at that comp. He finally saw what Jason can do. He's still Tracy's "project" but I think Brian is getting more invested in Jason. And Jason is adding a lot to what goes on at TCC.

I think Jason is just tired of talking about the quad. He wants to master it, it's hard for him, he's trying. What more can you say?

I don't think the ankle sprain is a big deal either. He's taping it and training normally. But it could be a factor in whether or not he tries a quad at Nationals. We'll see!

The audio was not good, but it was still interesting to listen. My take:

1. Jason has had a practiced answer on the quad for some years now, I don’t think that’s TCC. I remember another call a year or so ago where someone, possibly Phil, gave some long query ending with are you practicing quads and Jason just answered “yes”. And then silence.

The rest of the answers we’ve heard as the TCC line on new technique, and Jason has those down pat. Good for him.

2. I think the ankle sprain was a bigger deal at Golden Spin than anyone knew. Didn’t an ankle injury keep him from doing jumps at SOI for a month? But a sprain is a sprain and he’s had a month.

3. The way Jason said it, TCC definitely did not know about his splits or his Ina Bauers which beggars belief:shocked: And it sounds like the folks at Champs Camp were as unimpressed by a split less and spiral less LP as we were
They should ask us to evaluate:laugh:
