Jason Brown

Oh wow. For some reason I had never seen that performance. I think I mentioned awhile ago that the first time I was really aware of Jason was the following year in San Jose. He was soooo young then and seemingly totally confident. Loved the standing O at the end. You could really see what was to come. Thanks for posting Tavi. Great idea. Something to look forward to every day while I'm self-quarantining.

Thank you @Tavi, what a great idea.

Awww, almost baby Jason:luv17: And the standing ovation! So wonderful for him to go clean in his senior debut. And the look in the KnC when he gets his scores, how many times had we seen that with Kori.

Now, obviously Jason nine years ago cannot be judged against Jason now, but my thoughts....

I need to say this first, I'm sorry, that music. For 16 year old Jason:no: Now, I am probably prejudiced because I am not a huge violin fan in the first place, and I didn't like this. (I know, Schindler's List and mature Jason, exception that proves the rule). But it also seemed too grown up for our boy at this stage.

The sit spins, the steps, the expression, the transitions: all classic Jason. *Except* the catchfoot? No spiral? How he has grown and improved!

And the silly: did the Skokie Valley SC move? I am *so* accustomed to Winnetka, that hearing Wilmette gave me a turn;)

Thanks, @Tavi - such a good idea!

I'd not seen this performance before - beautiful skating, as you'd expect from Jason, but his speed across the ice seems so much faster now.

He's so obviously a Junior in this one, it's sweet. He's a little less sure of his edges here, and there are some noticeable pauses before twizzles in the step sequences, like he's not quite comfortable with his opposite direction.

I actually quite like this as a prospective "hey look at me, pick me for Jr Worlds, I will be a predominant Junior and I'm nearly ready for Senior" kind of program. It's more mature, but not so mature that he can't handle it.

Spins are already excellent, although I see one or two positions that have since been retired.

I can't help but notice the whopping flutz...and is my brain tricking me or did he do three triple flips in this skate? I laughed at the score...71 PCS...can you imagine our riot if he got 71 PCS these days...and he was so excited to score over 140 for the FS and over 200 total...so cute!

I noticed something else that helped make a point i've mentioned several times in the past - and Jason actually confirmed it. I've always noticed that when he went up for a jump he sort of paused for a second before his rotation. I liked it and it always looked like he was in control when actually it was a major flaw in his technique. He didn't have any time to adjust if the jump was going a little wonky and he certainly didn't have time to add another rotation.....hence, his inability to complete a quad for so long. Brian and Tracy have fixed that. So if you look at his old jumps and now look at his current jumps - you can really see the difference. He immediately starts rotating once his skates leave the ice. It makes his landings look more in control and probably keeps him from getting UR calls on his triples.

This is fun. Next?

I’m so glad people like the idea!

So my first thoughts about this vid aren’t about Jason, but the music & Ro. I love the opera Turandot, so even this instrumental pastiche makes me happy. Beyond that, I think this program is incredibly well constructed program - Ro really is amazing at creating choreo that highlights little moments in the music, and there are so many cool transitions. Regarding Jason, what struck me most (besides what a young 16-year old he was - his voice was still changing!) was how musical he is, how easily he flows over the ice, how he never stops moving. Even at that young age he was focused and concentrated on the performance and on telling a story from beginning to end. So even though in 2011 he was technically nowhere near where he is today, I still love watching this performance.

Other notes: Kori looks so young and beautiful here. And Jason’s hair doesn’t have a hint of frizz (or the copious amounts of product he started using later on). :)

Next: Here is Flow like Water, his FS at the 2011 JGPF (he won despite coming in second in both segments):

Not sure if this is before or after the 2011 Nats performance we just watched. Gonna leave my thoughts til later, but I do have a question. At some points, you can see a dark haired woman in the background, watching and pacing behind the boards. This comp was in Montreal (or was it Quebec? One of the two). Is it Marie-France Dubreuil?

Okay gotta go. This is day 2 of working at home full time. My cat is beside himself and demanding attention.

So, since so many places are live streaming old performances (if you’re an opera lover, check on the Met on Demand which is currently streaming 1 free broadcast per night) why don’t we do a Jason retrospective? :) Maybe we could do one per day, starting with the early ones, and just comment on what we like, what we never noticed before, what is still the same, what has changed, etc?

Here’s one to start us off, his 2011 free skate from Nats. This is the year he turned senior. I won’t comment on it until everyone has a chance to watch:

What a fabulous idea. Our county spiked to 68 cases overnight as test results come in. I need something to make me smile! Thank you!

Regarding the Turandot program, I noticed how calm Jason seemed, like he was totally prepared and just going out and doing his job. Even in the K/C, he seemed calmer than his adult self. Definitely happy, but somehow quieter than he seemed later.

And Jason’s hair doesn’t have a hint of frizz (or the copious amounts of product he started using later on)
Yep, puberty tends to bring out the frizz. The difference is really amazing.

Jason pointed out precisely that in the latest interview with Hersh. True, delayed rotation can look beautiful but surely it makes it much more difficult to squeeze in another turn in the air.

My thoughts on the Turandot program - it was the year before I discovered him, which was during WJC 2012 in Milan when he skated to Liebestraum. Both programs go to prove that you must have that unique innate talent to be a true artist. It can be said about many of the Jr. skaters "well, they will grow up and learn to express themselves better, and improve artistically" - while it may be true to a certain extent, but to have that something special, to set you apart from the rest of the pack and create a real work of art, you must be born with that spirit and feeling, it can never be "taught" or "learned". 16yr old Jason is the fine example. Of course he was still a diamond in the rough then, but still he must have been in the class of his own among other Jr. skaters - or Jr. or Sr. for that matter.
Also this makes me yearn even more for the reprise of Turandot Jason the grown up version, with the sweeping spiral during the climax, to the majestic voice of Luciano Pavarotti!!! :luv17:

I'll comment on the first video before watching the second. On the jump technique, it worked well for him with the triple jumps up to the Axel because he was strong enough to get those three rotations in. He clearly was used to spotting as he went up and then rotated. He said this year that he's still having some trouble figuring out where he is and where he'll be landing with the new technique which is why he tends to under-rotate. That seems to be improving and I hope that this enforced layoff doesn't cause him to go backward. What struck me in the performance was how graceful he is, but yet still has strong jumps and spins. Step sequence is slow compared to now and not as clean, but his arms! His arms are already really beautiful. I hate flailing arms. The day I first saw Jason, on TV, at 2014 Nats doing Riverdance, what drew me in was that grace and those arms. I hadn't seen that since John Curry and I was riveted! This is just 3 years earlier. He grew a lot and the jump technique apparently hadn't been working as well for him in 2014. But the jumps looked really good in this skate. The musicality is evident, Ro's choreo was sophisticated. He's clearly young and has a few junior characteristics, but he's so much more polished than most Juniors. So many skate from element to element with nothing in between. Jason has a cohesive performance. He was a very young 16. Really more 15 since his birthday is in December. But he was tiny! It's so sad they didn't teach him the Quad at 16. Sigh....And yes, the standing O at the end!

I wonder what 16 year old Jason would have thought if someone said to him that in 9 years, you'll be trying to do quad jumps and break 300! I can just see the face he'd make!

That thought crossed my mind, that Jason could do major justice to that music now. But I have a soft spot for Franco Correlli in Turandot. Not as mellifluous, but oh so dramatic. I saw him with Birgit Nilsson in the late 60s and that performance was earth shattering. It got a 15 minute standing ovation after Act II. In Philadelphia! Philadelphia is the toughest audience around! So if he does Turandot, I want Corelli! Jason was much calmer. I think Jason's battle with the 3A must have given him some confidence issues. And to think it was just the wrong jump technique. His 3A is beautiful now. Love watching this. Greensboro has been very good to Jason! I wish 2022 Nats was going to be in Greensboro.

Or Andrea Bocelli who was a student of Franco Corelli. Jason could do justice to many pieces it's just a matter of choosing wisely. I did not care for Simon and Garfunkel but it was early in their partnership and SL more than makes up for it.

I had never seen this one! It's really wonderful. Not technically perfect, but brilliant choreography and Jason could handle it. I was unfamiliar with the music as well. GPF 2011 would be after Nats 2011. Nats is always in January. GPF is in December. I thought he looked taller and more filled out. The jumps were a little dicier, probably because of the growth. But spin technique looked better and his performance seemed a bit more mature than Turandot. Interesting that his score was basically the same as his Nats 2011 score, but this was international scoring. So he was actually achieving that 208 outside of Nats in 2011. Han Yan came in 2nd and Josh came in 3rd. This is so interesting! Can't wait to see what you come up with tomorrow!

Jason didn't really like S&G either. I love the music, but not the cut that they used, nor the costume, nor was it really Jason. But it accomplished some goals. They needed to calm him down and give him space to work on his new technique. And I think they were playing into the melancholy that brought him to TCC to begin with. I think they wanted to tap into that and help him work out of it. A big issue was that it didn't compare favorably with Love is a B***h! He was brilliant in that and he looked lost half the time in S&G. But SL definitely makes up for it. David has redeemed himself!

Bocelli could be good. I'm ok with that. As an aside, I also saw Corelli booed off the stage in Philly in another opera (I can't even remember which one) because he had a cold and couldn't really sing. Philly audiences are mean! It was mean! Corelli also expressed his displeasure. Drama!

@Bookseller @16Olympics Of course! I mentioned Pavarotti because his name just popped up in my mind at that moment, but either Correlli or Bocelli would work beautifully, too :luv17: Although in general I have never been a big fan of music with vocal (mostly pop music, though, opera pieces are a different story!) instrumental version of Nessun Dorma without a powerful tenor just doesn't do the melody the justice!

What a lovely idea, Tavi!

I was there for that 2011 Nationals performance!!! Notice that the audience is expecting a great show from the start of the program. and had stuffies all ready to throw  That was because we had seen his SP, which was also special.

In the FS, Like with Riverdance, the audience is on their feet before the program is over!!

Yes, I noticed the delayed jump technique. So beautiful and so fatal. :( And yes he did not have a great lutz edge. And he was almost in tears as he left the ice.

Here's his 2011 Nationals SP to "Baliwood" by King City. He is so quick footed!

I am going back to watch Flows like Water now.

So true about the comparison of the short to S&G that year. This year he's progressed so much that a knockout short paired with a deliberate, emotional fs becomes so satisfying to watch. The fs music is so potent and the skating matches it after two years of work and patience. I just love where he is right now.

Flow Like Water has long been my favorite junior skate of Jason's.. I love it so much because it is a wonderful soundtrack, the choreography is chock full.. I marvel at the energy of it every time I see it, and I bet Jason had some input into the choice of routine since it is a fantasy piece about a young man growing into and living up to his potential ... it's a great young person's film (despite the critics .. I often watch films for young people and The Last Airbender just great imho).
This is an especially nice short program routine 2012 with Johnny Weir commenting... another energetic piece
