Jason and Mariah are off to Milwaukee. I found it cute that his foot got tagged at being Rohene, Vincent and Kori.

Also... the looks about the same in Monument as it did up here this morning. Random raining day, hope it does not make for a headache travel day.
 
Thanks all - so wishing you could be with me.

I am not looking forward to getting up early to drive from Chicago to Milwaukee in our odious rush hour traffic, but I'm definitely psyched to get there (and will fortify myself with good coffee, great music, and a zen like attitude for the drive up)!

@MGstyle, welcome, and thanks for the Nepela report! I'm glad to know Jason mostly runs full programs in his practices, because we all know he can do beautiful 3As (and 4Ts, I guess) in isolation - it's how he does them in the program. So practice should give us a better idea of how competitive he's likely to be here.

Stitch, we had rain in Chicago last night, but right now the weather here and & in Milwaukee is cloudy/ 72. So hopefully that means no flight delays no matter which airport J&M fly into. I really hope Mariah does well here, even if she doesn't place super high - I just hated to see that Jackie Wong predicts she will come in dead last - boo!

El Henry, I just discovered Orford Hill and was quite taken with them - very joyous performers, and it's amazing they've only been together a couple of months. I don't think they have worlds minimums yet, but hopefully that will come.

I think most of all (except for the spiral sequence!) I'm looking forward to seeing these skaters together, live. Last year I was simply overwhelmed with the power and speed of all the elite men (no one at my recreational rink does more than doubles). This year I'm excited to really compare among skaters the beauty of jumps, depth of edges, speed, etc. it's so hard to gauge these things from video clips.

By the way, for those who haven't seen, TSL will be doing a live YouTube show from Skate America on Thursday at 8:30 eastern. So no doubt they'll be giving practice reports, too. If I see them, I will definitely tell them how much I've been enjoying them the past few months.

@Papagena - I hope you have loads of fun, and get to see some marvellous perfomances firsthand, and am looking forward to hearing your impressions!

Obviously, good luck to Jason - especially with the quad!

As for other skaters, please cheer a little for Astakhova/Rogonov on my behalf. :)

Never would have noticed the foot tagging if you had not mentioned it. Too cute!:laugh:

ETA: 1,000 posts. I have to find some other way to spend retirement. ;)How appropriate that it is in the Jason fan fest!

Congratulations! 1,000 is such a milestone - after which the posts just accumulate. It's like an avalanche, which first just starts smoothly with one little snowball... :)
 
I thought Phil was more matter-a-fact -- Jason does have a huge challenge ahead of him.

FWIW, Phil has a huge beat -- Olympics -- so he really can pick and choose what he wants to write about. Besides that's not really how newsrooms work. There's no editor over Phil's head that says YOU MUST WRITE THIS!!

That almost makes it worse... that he is choosing to write this when he comes across that he does not really want to. I could forgive him more if he he was feeling pressure.

He went out of his way to try to dismiss everything he could.

He did not have to say Jason "vainly" attempted a quad, he could have said he attempted a quad that was downgraded, but no reason to add the adjective.

He did not need to mention beating Dennis last year if it was only to tack on basically that it should not count... if it does not count don't mention it.

He did not need to go out of his way to try to make Jason's placements at worlds sound less impressive by adding the whole "but he was six in the short and 5 in the long" framed like it was a bad thing and implying that the finish was somehow not deserved. The point difference is reasonable, the framing it as "despite" anything adds needless opinion to it.

He did not even need to put Jason in the headline. He could have done it as a general piece on Skate America or done it a joint focus on Gracie and Jason. He seems to have made the choice to focus the article on someone he does not respect. I see no reason for him to have put Jason in the headline if only to talk about how bad he is.

His job really is not to give predictions on what will happen, he really should be reporting on what is happening today, not what he thinks the end season results will be.

And yes of course Jason and the quad tho not sure how good I will be at spotting < in person. And Newbie, yes of course to Shoma and Mura. And Han Yan and D10! It's such a very rich field and I feel privileged to be able to see it in person. I am also really looking forward to the ladies, and shockingly for me am even looking forward to pairs & dance. I agree with this. And given that figure skating is on life support in the US, I'm happy to see any news coverage about it here.

YMMV, clearly here. I actually think Phil probably has more expectations for Jason than Gracie at this point, given that Gracie get's a mere blurb in the article and it was about her less-than-stellar performance at Japan Open.

And he never wrote that beating Denis "didn't count" but that rather using it as an indicator on his potential to beat Denis in the big event was questionable. That's not an unreasonable thing to say.

Phil isn't saying anything I wouldn't have thought regarding his prospects this season. If Jason says on the record he wants to beat the top men, then it's reasonable for journalists like Hersh to analyze his prospects at this point.

I'm actually beginning to come round to Mrs P's opinion that Hersh's articles are less about him disliking Jason and more about him being, well, a bit disappointed, maybe?

For instance, if you read the article he wrote in 2011 after Jason's breakthrough FS, he was practically gushing, even though Jason didn't even have a triple Axel yet. Since then, his articles have become increasingly negative, as well as his Twitter comments. But compared to that first article, these later ones read like how a 19th century father would describe his well-educated son who has had all the privileges and all the potential in the world but still insists on remaining a bit of a rake at 28 and just will not settle down with the nice but plain but rich girl from the neighbouring estate (I have been reading a lot of Trollope lately) :laugh2:

It's more like he was super excited about Jason and expected him to win everything right away, and when the Axel and then the quad took so long to materialise, he felt like he wasn't getting enough bang for his buck. If Jason were to win a couple of times - with PCS that was unquestionably deserved - I think we might be back to gushing :)

You can never have too much Trollope. ;) (There's a Doctor Thorne adaptation in the works - hopefully they'll remain at least reasonably faithful. Miss Dunstable is apparently an American heiress, though... )

Interesting to see the discussion re Hersh's article - sadly, I cannot read the article itself because of the pop-up thingy.
 
Re: Hersh's article on Jason. In terms of substance, I think his article is fair. Basically, it's nothing new: Jason is aiming at the world podium and will need the quad to get there. He doesn't have it yet, ergo he probably won't beat the top 3 yet.

Unfortunately, the article's atmospherics are relentlessly negative and sometimes snide. This is quite a long article to convey not much substance, so the atmospherics can grate--at least for some of us.

Ya know, you all can always send a note to Hersh if you feel his coverage needs more substance. :)

ETA: It think it's worth remembering that Hersh is not the TSL of print newspapers. Unlike TSL, which aims at a hard core skating audience, the majority of folks who read the Chicago Tribune don't really follow skating. It might seem like "duh!" to us fans that Hersh would write about Jason needing quads and 3As to reach the top echelon, but not every reader knows that and often that has to be repeated before that point sinks in.

It's a matter of explaining expectations. Back in 2011, he could heap praise on Jason because he was new and his performance at Nationals wasn't expected. The yardstick is a lot different now.

My husband just told me about that yesterday! I'm so excited - I live for period dramas :laugh:

Interesting approach to Miss Dunstable, but I must say I approve! Now that I think about it, her demeanour is not very "English", as in not very proper or demure enough. She is too opinionated, even brash at times. I like her very much :)

ETA: I got the pop-up as well, but it disappeared once I (quite accidentally) touched the screen outside of the box :)
