Jason Brown

:hijacked:

My husband just told me about that yesterday! I'm so excited - I live for period dramas

Interesting approach to Miss Dunstable, but I must say I approve! Now that I think about it, her demeanour is not very "English", as in not very proper or demure enough. She is too opinionated, even brash at times. I like her very much :)

ETA: I got the pop-up as well, but it disappeared once I (quite accidentally) touched the screen outside of the box :)

Exactly my concern, actually - that they'll make her into an American stereotype. The "freespoken" American versus the "inhibited" English... When it's actually a question of class difference. Still, maybe it's easier for the modern viewer to understand. I'm not too exercised about it - it could very well work - but it raises concern at what else they may change to simplify, and make it more "accessible" to modern audiences. Instead of showing old times as they were, they may be "fixed" to be more palatable to modern tastes. But, we'll see...

I'll try that with the pop-up and see if it works - thanks.:)

I'm actually beginning to come round to Mrs P's opinion that Hersh's articles are less about him disliking Jason and more about him being, well, a bit disappointed, maybe?

For instance, if you read the article he wrote in 2011 after Jason's breakthrough FS, he was practically gushing, even though Jason didn't even have a triple Axel yet. Since then, his articles have become increasingly negative, as well as his Twitter comments. But compared to that first article, these later ones read like how a 19th century father would describe his well-educated son who has had all the privileges and all the potential in the world but still insists on remaining a bit of a rake at 28 and just will not settle down with the nice but plain but rich girl from the neighbouring estate (I have been reading a lot of Trollope lately) :laugh2:

It's more like he was super excited about Jason and expected him to win everything right away, and when the Axel and then the quad took so long to materialise, he felt like he wasn't getting enough bang for his buck. If Jason were to win a couple of times - with PCS that was unquestionably deserved - I think we might be back to gushing :)

I think this is a great analysis. The first part of the article didn't seem that bad to me but he did pile it on a bit thick towards the end. I didn't see him there today, but I did meet Jenny and Dave - they are both really really nice. Yes, I confess: I like Dave Lease.

Sorry I didn't give much detail earlier but I was trying to type and watch. I thought that overall it looked like the first 10 am (ie too early!) practice of the first competition of the season. The women were much more on in their practice.

So: since this is the Jason thread I'll start with him. When he was warming up, just going edges and steps, his skating was absolutely gorgeous. It seemed fast and strong with beautiful flow. During warm up for me at least he was mesmerizing. I didn't think anyone else could compare with him. He loses some of that in the program - not just because of the jumps(many of which are beautiful) but because he is a bit slower and... I feel he really doesn't hold the flow and beautiful lines enough. Perhaps some if that was the other skaters on the ice. There were a few near misses.

I have to stop for a bit but will add more later. I'm going to put everything in this thread instead of jumping to the Mac thread, etc.

Yeah, I noticed when I was watching the Max practice videos that he had one with Kostya near the start of his FS. It happens all the time. You take six skaters of any level, and regardless of how well-trained they are, how high a level they are, at some point they'll all end up at the same part of the ice.

Thx Papagena, for the practice reports.

As for olyPhil, I remain unconvinced. "Did Jason run over his puppy" is a good reaction to how he writes.

Phil's exact words: ("fair use", since I intend to criticize them):

" ....finished a "distant" 19.43 points from third at the 2015 worlds, where the field did not include Chan.

"But Brown did beat 2015 world bronze medalist Denis Ten of Kazakhstan last year at Skate America, even if that took place so early in the season its value as a measuring stick was questionable."

"The same thing could be said of their meeting at Skate America".

"Brown comes to Milwaukee off an Oct. 3 victory in the Nepela Trophy, part of a competitive skating series a level below the Grand Prix. He beat an unimposing field despite vainly trying to land a quad for the second time in competition and struggling as he had last season with the most difficult jump he has mastered, the triple axel."

"So he is determined to keep trying quads and has increased the difficulty of his entries to the triple axel, which factored into his botching all three triple axels at Nepela."

Phil, I come from Philadelphia, land of the tough, cynical, snow-throwing football fan. I don't take offense because I'm some wilting flower where my fav skater is concerned. I take offense because the tone sounds like you should be in the 700 section of the late, lamented Vet, not writing for the Trib. It's snide, and dare I say, bitter. And please don't try to tell me it's objectivity, Phil. It's not. I argue for a living, (or for free, now:biggrin:) and I know argumentative words when I see them.

It's a shame, I think Phil can do better, but he's in a routine and he's not breaking out of it.

And, to

I love what he says about the quad - about attacking it; just a great attitude! :)

Oooooooohhh I especially loved this: "It's been very consistent, it's been really solid". Me likey!!!

PS. Re Miss Dunstable: I agree it's more about class than nationality, but then Americans in the 19th century would've been "lower" class kind of by default from an aristocratic British point of view, no?
I hope you're joining our book club!
;)

I don't think I told anyone this, but Jason follows my twitter and I told him via twitter direct message good luck, that I'll be watching, and that I'll be throwing a blue-striped hat onto the ice after his SP that I hand-knitted. And guess what...HE REPLIED! YEEEEEEEP!!!!!

I couldn't believe he popped the toe on the end of the flip. Jason's 3F+3T is usually super consistent and seems so easy for him. What a shame. Well, it's early, and I'm sure the more he skates his program the better it will be.

Awesome luck tomorrow, Jason. I can hardly wait!

That is so cool! He's one of the nicest guys on the ice! I love that you knitted him a hat.

That's SO sweet (that you did that for him, and that he replied to you)!Good luck in the free skate, Jason!

Just watching the Japanese broadcast. Minoru Sano, the commentator was so impressed with Jason's program. He said it was a difficult, jamb-packed program to do but that Jason did the steps so lightly.
He was especially impressed with the difficult entry into his spins.

Thank you so much for the report!

I'm always really interested to hear what commentators from different countries have to say, so I try to watch the ESP broadcasts in all the languages I can understand. Japanese is not one of them (nor is Russian), so I really appreciate it when somebody takes the time to translate :)

Thanks very much for this translation! Actually, I found myself wondering after the program if Rohene packed too much difficulty into it. I know that Jason relies on his ability to smooth out the kinks and build momentum over the season, that's Kori's strategy ... but I think Jason has so much credibility with international judges right now that they would really reward him if he performed it perfectly.

I guess I'm such a Jason uber-fan that I want to see him do well at every performance. But, his joy of skating and charisma do come across, no matter what.

He's one of the sweetest guys on the PLANET! I remember when I met him after a Stars on Ice show last year (OMG I'm smiling like an idiot remembering it cause it was that amazing!), he hugged everyone that came up and met him and he was just SOOOOO happy and appreciative!

Despite his botched 3-3 combo, I thoroughly enjoyed his SP! Sure he might have gotten 8th place after the SP, but that doesn't matter to me. I loved it! And it left me happy!
