Jason Brown

It really seems odd to me that we don't see more of them. I can understand the whole not doing +3Lo combos due to them so rarely being credited... but skaters get credit for +2lo in three jump combos, both with a 2T and with a second 2lo all the time. If it can get credited in a 3 jump combination why not a 2 jump combination? A a lot of skaters could get an extra .5 base value by replacing a 2T with a 2Lo and in some cases reduce the risk of Zayaking in the process. I really don't get why we don't see more of them.

Good point, I never realised the difference was as much as 0.5 points! What I love about that combo is that the loop comes so suddenly, when with the toe there's clear preparation. Mao did a 3Lo3Lo right in front of me at FT (practice) and it was just exhilarating!

He talks about how the news of Josh Farris' retirement reminded him of the importance of maintaining his health. He was in the car with his parents when the news came out. "We just started crying. Josh has been such an integral part of my skating career and growing up in the sport as long as I can remember. It felt like a piece of me and my journey in the sport was also ending...I didn't realize how much someone retiring would affect me."

Is there a link to this so I can go cry over it some more?

Haven't watched it yet, but there's an interview with Jason on the second episode of Scott Hamilton's new show on Ice Network. There's one with Christopher Dean too: http://web.icenetwork.com/video/v1211139683

The edited Jason interview within the new Scott H episode has lots of good stuff.

And if ;) anyone here would be interested in even more, I recommend also Scott's full-length Jason interview.

How is his Japanese? I am sure he is finding that it is a humbling experience to learn it! ... Jason is so good to his fans!

So happens that Scott's interview touches on some of the topics in this thread.
For example, Jason talks about why he was interested in learning Japanese.

I must say that Scott has been doing a nice job as interviewer. He compliments Jason on being so good to his fans, and then makes a self-deprecating joke along the lines that he himself can't even remember to have a Sharpie .

Nice article on Jason in the Dec. IFS Magazine. ...

Arriba, thanks so much for typing out the long notes and quotes from IFS Magazine to share with us.

Jason's reaction to Josh's retirement is very poignant :sad4:. Hugs to Josh :ghug: and to Jason :ghug:.

(As an aside, when telling Scott about the Browns' annual New Year's trip and traditions, Jason mentions that his family is a bunch of criers and bawlers. A passionate family .)

I saw a video of Jason going somewhere in a car with his family. (You probably saw it too). They were singing and just having a great old time! It was easy to see why Jason is who he is, just by seeing the interaction with his family. Plus I thought it was great that they went to Japan when he skated in some of the summer ice shows there and made it a family vacation...Jason has so many Japanese fans. In fact, I think it was THE ICE (ice shows) that did some kind of poll of fans to see who did they want to have included as guests in the ice shows, and many people asked for Jason...Like I said, he's one of our National Treasures! :clapper:

@ice coverage, thanks so much for posting the Scott Hamilton interview! I agree he's going a great job with those interviews and love that he's just talking to the skaters as people, even though he asks skating-related questions. And I am so thrilled that unlike most of ice network's video, this interview (as opposed to the Scott Hamilton show itself) is accessible on my iPhone. Not sure if you need a subscription to watch the interview - I have one but did not log in so I'm guessing not? Anyway, it's well worth a listen!

For us Jason deprived fans, here's a brief clip of him practicing a beautiful combo at the Cleveland Skating Club:

RE: The Scott Hamilton interview, no subscription is necessary to view it. I loved Jason mentioning how special it was that skaters from around the world gathered in the kiss-n-cry with him at World Team Trophy, cheering and celebrating his success. I remember we discussed how unique that was and it's nice to know that it's one of his cherished memories.

I loved the Scott Hamilton interview! I enjoyed all of it, but especially towards the end when Jason talks about never feeling afraid when leaving the ice after a program. I think I'm going to have to listen to all of Scott's interviews now.

If it's a new Jason ex then I'm torn between dying to see it and dying not to know.

I feel like I go from one extreme to the other. On one hand, I have dear Max, who skates the same two exs for four years in the same tight jeans and white shirt (not complaining about THAT part), and then on the other, I have dear Jason, who chops and changes his exs regularly for some often truly frightening choices and who you kind of have to cover your eyes and peek through the fingers to see if the costume is not hideous.

Joining in on the chorus with loving the Scott Hamilton interview, and such a mutual admiration society. So cool!

and speaking of Scott Hamilton, the program from the benefit show tonight:

Did Jason skate to Stevie Wonder???:agree: Would my life be complete if I saw that skate?

Since Michael McDonald was the guest performer and he recorded a cover of Signed, Sealed, Delivered, it's probable that Jason skated to this version:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XqdZqbZq8cM

Regardless, I hope it was recorded!!!

I am now thinking about this, and it occurs to me....

Michael McDonald was a guest performer at this show. Looking at many of the songs, they are Michael McDonald hits form the 90s (Keep Forgettin, Ya Mo Be There), so "maybe" it was an all Michael McDonald show, with new exhibitions for everyone just for the show?

A cover of Signed, Sealed, Delivered? Oh well ...

And although it's not his fan fest, kudos to Max for fighting back at Rostelecom. I'm sure Jason would be proud!

So who's excited for NHK this weekend???

I have to say, I'm not comfortable with how many people are putting him on the podium in their predictions. It seems like he always does best when people leave him out of the top six

I'm with you on both counts - excited for NHK, but a bit uncomfortable with the predictions. It's not so much the predictions here (I'm sure he doesn't read them!), but Jackie Wong is also predicting him to place second and make GPF. I think everyone expected Ashley to win, too, and look what happened to her.

However, one thing we do know about Jason is that he's pretty good at handling pressure - he showed that when he won Nats, when he skated last at Worlds, and most recently when he skated last again, following Shoma, and landed the darn quad and gave a beautiful performance at Skate America.

Of course there are things outside of his control, e.g., Shin Amano could be the Tech Specialist, Kolyada, Nathan, Bychenko, Elladj, etc, could have skates of their lives, he could have a bad day, etc. But he's been skating really well, we know he's motivated to make the GPF, and I think he can place as low as fourth and still go - and if he doesn't, well, it's not a matter of life or death. Really, as usual, my hope for him is two clean beautiful programs with landed, rotated quads. Then whatever happens I'll be okay with.

One wild card: I know Kori mentioned the possibility of adding the 4S at NHK - I am curious if they will.

Anyway, here's Jason's take - he doesn't look worried! Smart to give himself extra time to deal with jet lag.
