Jason Brown

It is kinda too bad he didn’t do Worlds cause he could’ve picked up some more WS points by finishing top 6 there, which was a realistic placement with that field. Still it’s pretty good.

As for Phil Hersh, I’m not surprised he is full blown Nathan in his review. Honestly Nathan caters to his worldview that what matters is that success medal winners with multiple quads and he can point to him to when people voice concerns about the difficulty of balancing tech and artistry. (I do find it ironic that it’s lost on him - or not — that Nathan’s Nemesis program is more compelling when a lot of the technical content is taken out.)

Jason has received plenty of rave reviews about his performance from lots of folks and doesn’t need Phil Hersh’s affirmation that he offers something to the sport. I kinda do understand his impatience regard Jason and quads. (Especially when you have someone like Nathan who is picking them up at lightning speed). A lot of people share that impatience. Heck we do here.

He did get a lot of points from 4 Continents. How many more would he have if he was 6th at worlds? Looked it up: he would have 709 in place of his 680 from 4CC. So 29 extra points for a sixth, not enough to move him up in the standings over Bychenko. Of course, it would have been more if he'd done better.

It's really hard to say how Jason would have done because who knows his condition at the time. But with his season's best score, he would have been 4th, which would be an extra 195 points, which would been enough for a 4th place standing. But it's probably here nor there. It sounds like Bychenko is retiring and Javier is unlikely going to be at Worlds, so Jason will probably be in the top 6 among the men left -- so he would be in decent standing if he makes another World team.

I agree, it’s very ironic. :)

The truth is, I dont really care what PH did or did not say about any other skaters, but this was the Chicago show, and Jason is a hometown favorite, so it bothers me that his presence was barely acknowledged. And that’s all I’m going to say about that.

On the other hand, I loved seeing these pictures of Jason at Ronald McDonald House:

I have to say, though, that I really wish Jason would share his plans for next season. Even though it’s only the beginning of May, this offseason has been seeming endless. Normally I would enjoy speculating about his new programs, costumes, and Sr B / GP assignments, but it’s kind of hard to get into it when it’s not clear who he’ll be training with or even if he’ll be competing next season. :drama:

I still don't understand why we're speculating that he's not competing? Didn't somebody tweet that he's working on new programs (and a description of what they're like?)? And there were reports of him at Air Force ice rink practicing the SP? And I don't see why he would go to all the trouble of working on a SP if he wasn't competing.

SOI is almost over, so I'm sure we'll know in a few weeks. (Or watch him post something like TODAY, just because you asked, lol.)

Just curious: Did Jason ever give any detail as to how he exactly he sprained his ankle? All I know is that it happened the day before SOI in Chicago.

FWIW, he happens to be standing up at Ronald McDonald House in the second photo here.

A good sign of healing, I hope. :ghug: At least no boot or visible support.

I would add that just like many of us, Hersh had predicted good things for Jason's Olympic season.

If he can stay healthy, don't be surprised to see the ever-optimistic Brown land his first quadruple jump in competition and improve on his ninth-place Olympic finish.

I remember that prediction. And since Jason fell short of that prediction, I expect that Phil will write him off at this point -- hence why I wasn't surprise (or particularly bothered) that he didn't talk too much about Jason in his SOI review. It's the typical sportswriter mantra -- Jason is out, Nathan is in.

My point that it isn’t Hersh’s job to affirm anyway. And I don’t think he should be overly praised or criticized for what he says. It just his thoughts on the matter.

I think there was an SOI review in which someone said (?that Jason said?) he hurt it on a jump during his second program in Detroit.

Thanks for the information. :thank:

We shall see (re writing off or not).

My two cents are that I believe Phil would be happy to report on Jason and Jason's storylines in the new season. New chance for additional redemption (beyond Four Continents). New programs. And of course, the possibility of a new coach, relocation, etc.
Also, new rules (topic of great interest to Phil) for elements, GOE, etc. -- with the possibility that Team Jason can use them to his advantage??

Max has retired. Possible/likely that Ross, Adam, Grant will not be competing.
Nathan is World Champion (first U.S. man since 2009), and understandably will get major attention. [ETA: Even if he were not World Champion, the two-time U.S. champ has the unprecedented storyline of matriculating at an Ivy, on the other side of the country from his long-time coach. The Ivy that happens to be Hersh's own alma mater.]
Among other U.S. men, Jason and Vincent will be the most obvious ones to watch. (Not the only worthy ones, but the most obvious ones.)

ETA:
Given that Phil has been reporting on Jason since 2011, I do not think that the outcome from one season would cause Phil to write Jason off. YMMV.

To be fair, I think I’m the only one speculating that he’s not competing. I have no rational basis for it. It’s simply that to me he seems to be undecided about his next steps. That’s partly based on the fact that he hasn’t talked about what happened last season. Yes, he did tweet about working on a SP with Rohene. But because he pulled out of Worlds after doing so well at 4CCs and everything appearing great with Kori, I guess I’m going on the theory that the usual rules may not apply right now, and that working on a SP is not a guarantee he’ll compete next season. I’m probably wrong - in fact, I fervently HOPE I’m wrong! :)

So why do it at all? All you're doing is spreading completely baseless rumours and stirring up scenarios on the thinnest of bases. It's not like Jason is Max, who spent most of the season dropping hints and thus speculation about his retirement was logical. I mean, Jason even announced a new SP, for goodness' sake.

All of the evidence points to him continuing next season and there's not even the smallest shred of evidence to suggest he'll sit it out.

That said, this is the longest "next week" ever.

Here's something different. In this video from Ice House in NJ from when Jason was there with Rohene last week, what do you make of the music? I know it could just be rink music, but any chance it could be Jason's SP music? The DinkyD poster who saw Jason at the Cadet Rink described the music as being "... kind of modern and sophisticated". I think this could be described that way, though to me, it sounds like electronic Celtic.

Here's the clip from the NJ rink.

Here's DinkyD's post from March 31.

If I'm correct on "Can't Stop the Feeling"....this piece would be his 2nd show piece....not his new short. The new short sounded kind of modern and sophisticated. I'll pay more attention if he comes to the rink again this coming week:)

Thoughts?

Karne, I’m not “spreading completely baseless rumors [or] stirring up scenarios.” Rather, I am expressing a thought and feeling - a fear, if you will - personal to me. If what I say upsets you, I’m sorry. But please don’t attack me for feeling differently - or interpreting the “evidence” - differently than you do.

Thoughts?

I will need to get back to you on this, since I have not listened (the parlor grand is being played, not by me, so no outside music for awhile;) ) and am now just talking out of my hat, but...

Electronic Celtic? :bang:

Cotton eyed joe comes to mind :eekn:

Not at all. Not at all. :) Enjoy your parlor grand. My piano needs tuning. It's too bad to play.

The parlor grand was spousal unit's idea, and any and all classical music knowledge I have is thanks to him. Every once in a while I play a skater video for him and say, is this a bad cut of for example, this Chopin etude, or a good cut, because I have no idea:laugh:

That music in the IG clip does indeed sound vaguely Celtic and definitely electronic. Since we'll take whatever crumbs of info we can get from Jason, I say new program:biggrin: It sure doesn't sound like any "rink" music I've heard, although of course it could be the music of someone else at the Ice House.

Jason, haven't you heard that nature abhors a vacuum (of information):)

Please do not bicker and lecture each other. Please do not go on diatribes on what should or shouldn’t be posted on this thread.

Please keep the spirit of the thread in mind: To talk and cheer for Jason Brown. Of course there can be mentions of other skaters and people and it’s natural for threads to go off topic.

But when a topic details the spirit of the FF, it may be time to start a separate thread outside the FF.

And it might be good to think what the ever-cheerful Jason would do. :cheer:

And, taking whatever confirmation of whatever good news we can....

Jason is in fact planning to compete this year:yahoo: On his latest IG post, he answered a comment with:
" I LOVE DETROIT TOO! Can’t wait to go back for the US Championships :) "

Hmmmm, one of two cities with a direct flight from my local airport:scratch3:
