Jason Brown

I would hope for a pure Classical piece, which is for him a relatively unexplored field in the last several years. (the last one being Liebestraum from 2013, if I am not mistaken?) - for him it will perhaps give a fresh feel.
It just occurred to me that he will meet Kori (aside from me ) in Grenoble :luv17: that will be sweet

Well if we go by the SP reminding us a bit of Question of U, maybe the FS will draw on... Riverdance?!

But I would really love it if they used orchestral music from Richard Strauss’ opera Der Rosenkavalier (sorry couldn’t find “perfect” recording, but these will do):

Haha, true. But this is the first season we're not having Rohene do both programs so all bets/rules are off!

Those are lovely pieces. We will see. FWIW, David Wilson did a lot of classical pieces for Patrick Chan.

I like the music cuts David Wilson did for the R&J programs for both Ashley Wagner and Yuzuru Hanyu in the 2013-2014 Olympic season, but the program never worked for Ashley and Yuzu's program was too soon with him doing an iconic R&J program just two seasons earlier.

I think Jason could pull of the choreography for the music in those two programs. Not that I'm advocating for a warhorse. On the other hand, Jason hasn't really done one since 2011 (i.e. Turnadot) or 2013 if you consider Liebestraum a warhorse, so he probably could get away with it.

https://twitter.com/aliflour/status/1012871459830575104 Is Jason Brown's face the best thing to add to your stationery and hand-written letters? I think so.

I keep waiting for someone to ask, "What is stationery?". Anyway, that stamp is a bit odd.

I'm curious how much Jason will be led in his choice of music for the LP, or if he will be encouraged to go with his heart. I have the impression that, with the exception of Hamilton, Rohene made the decisions and Jason went along with it. He's mentioned in the past that he'd like to do Latin. And we know he loves his show tunes. Can't wait to see.

I'm often hesitant to post links to things that involve young skaters, but there's a video posted on IG yesterday of him teaching a spin at the VA G2C to a teen skater that I just love. I can' stop watching it. It's mostly the skater which is why I feel weird posting it, but Jason is tagged so it's easy to find. I love Jason in teacher mode.

Stationary stores are SO popular now with people doing artsy journals and buying brush pens or stuff -- or maybe that's my perception based on who I follow on IG, LOL. I think it would odd to have ANYONE's face in stamp form. I'll just consider it cool fan art. :)

Yeah, I don't know about much about David Wilson's style regarding people choosing music. Maybe i need to watch that TSL interview with him. But one thing he's said a few times, and said it recently regarding Zhenya is that he likes to help find the skater's voice. I think Rohene's done a good job with programs that make the most of Jason's talents in the artistic arena, i.e, flexibility, line, etc., but I'm not sure if he's fully defined what his voice as a skater is.

Tavi mentioned earlier that Zhenya and Jason are comparable in some ways, despite the former having more hardware and I think this is possibly one area where I can see that. Watching Zhenya live a few times, I am struck by her musicality and her commitment to performance, which Jason has as well, but I think with some programs they perform them well and with passion, but sometimes it seems like they're performing to the choreographer's vision more so than to what they truly want to express as skaters. Rohene, bless him, is amazing, but sometimes you can tell that he can almost overdo it on the choreography to the point where Jason is spending FAR too much time trying to perform it then actually skating -- we saw that with the Great Gatsby program before he sat out in the 2015-2016 season and I think we saw it with that Inner Love program last season.

With Zhenya she was kinda subject to Averbach's whims --i.e. that Extremely Loud, Incredibly Close program -- She made it work because she's a good performer, but man I think if given the choice, doing a program with 9/11 voice overs was probably not something she would done. What struck me about the Anna Karenina program is that it was probably one of the few programs, along with her W.E. program from her debut senior season, where I saw what Zhenya wanted to go as a skater/performer/artist. Her performance in the Olympics/Euros was incredibly moving.

I saw that G2C video and I agree it's really fun to see Jason work with skaters!

Small article (from Norfolk TV station, but no video, unless my old iMac is missing it?) about Jason's visit to G2C, with blurry photo:

And he's looking to Beijing::yay:

“Last season was tough, but taking time to grow from that and come here and working with these kids really propels me to want to work hard and come back stronger and make that 2022 Beijing Olympic Team,” said Brown.

That looks like a screengrab from a video. I bet they did a video segment for the newscast but it’s not ready yet.

Speaking of censoring songs, Dua Lipa, who Jason will be seeing in concert soon has a song called IDGAF.

For those that might have wondered, yes a skater has used music that has the word "b*tch" in the title:

Adrian Schultheiss (SWE) had this group of songs for his FS in 2009-2010:
Teardrop by Massive Attack; Insane in the Brain by Cypress Hill; Smack my b*tch up by Prodigy

.

Omg Adrian! I miss his skating! He was always so interesting. His career ended too soon.

Fwiw, he had so many songs they just didn’t included the Prodigy song in the music section https://youtu.be/u8hj3QbVU8g

Adrian is actually a good example of someone who had a good sense of what his voice and style was. He wasn’t like the top echelon, but a lot of people remember his skating cause he was so distinct.

Anyone want to speculate a bit more about what kind of FS we might see? Does David Wilson use classical music for the most part, or does it vary with the skater? For those of you who know his work better than I do, would you say he’s particularly good at certain things (step sequences, for example)? I think in the TSL interview he said he tries to bring out a skater’s best qualities. Do you think he’s successful at that? Do you think he’s more successful with certain “types” of skaters, and if so, which ones? What do you think he might see in Jason that he will try to bring out?

Lots of questions, I know. But I’ll be interested in the answers!

ETA really nice pic of Jason and his mom:

I don't know enough about David's choreography to answer most of your questions. Some things I did pick up from various interviews is that if a skater is really, really attached to a piece of music David will go with it even if he doesn't think it's the best fit for the skater. He also mentioned that the partnership between skater and choreographer is an evolving process and the first year can be a bit of trial and error as they figure out what works and what doesn't.

Jason gives him a lot to work with so I am hoping for a program that will highlight his strengths and fit him artistically. I really hope he doesn't go the Javi route with Jason. If I had to compare Jason's style to another, I think Patrick Chan would be a closer match.

Jason is on Zhenya's IG live right now! They're having a lot of fun and Jason's trying to speak some Russian haha

Zhenya mentioned that she and Jason are going to the same Senior B as well as the same GPs in the IG live video. If a specific Senior B was mentioned I missed it. The Autumn Classic International is probably a good guess though. :)

Let's hope so, so @Tavi can report;)

Can IG lives be captured, and perhaps some kind Zhenya fan will post? In any event, I hope the fizzy drink was not "kvass":noshake: We have a Russian deli half a mile from my house, with pierogies and pickle soup and borscht to die for. But kvass, which my friend who lived in Russia loves, must be an acquired taste:biggrin:

Darn, I missed the insta live, hopefully someone captured it and will post it, but sounds like it was a lot of fun!

Also, I'm so excited for the season to start! I love that Jason and Zhenya are competing at the same comps, their friendship is so cute :)

So among the news with Daisuke Takahashi is that David Wilson will be choreographing his SP. I'm not sure if it's been done yet... so maybe we'll see some Dice-K/Jason photos. That would be cool!

In the famous Jason/Josh interview in IN (which is still here, so go save it while you can) he talks about how much he admires both Patrick Chan's smooth skating/posture and Dice-K's performance style. He also mentions Dice-K in the Orange Team card interview.

Incidentally, David has only choreographed one competitive program for him, his SP from the 2011-2012 season, which was to a song called "In the Garden of Souls."

As I mentioned earlier. He's done far more programs for Patrick, which I link to a few here: https://www.goldenskate.com/forum/showthread.php?41239-Jason-Brown&p=2117840&viewfull=1#post2117840

However, the one skater David Wilson did REALLY well with was Yuna Kim. Basically, he did some AMAZING programs for her to a mix of warhorses and unique classical pieces. My faves:

Dance Macabre (2008-2009 SP): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZAvsv93ZFM
Scheherazade (2008-2009 FS): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aUPli-YWzWw

Seeing these two programs above is why I got back to watching FS after a long long layoff., actually. I had heard of Yuna Kim namely because I had done a big trip to Korea the year before and she was everywhere, so one day I was looking at Kpop videos and then I kept encountering videos Yuna and was like, hey I should look at her skating.

Gershwin's Concerto in F (2009-2010 FS): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eoMkWIA2jVY <--- honestly for me one of the best Olympic skates of all time.
The Lark Ascending (2006-2007 SP): She won the GPF (in her debut senior season!) with this! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51rt5-eAQVs

I know a lot of people say her later performances weren't as good, but I'd disagree, here are two I really liked:
Kiss of a Vampire (2012-2013 SP): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24nE0lNhBgI
Les Miserables (2012-2013 FS): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GIU7Gsbkghg <--- This still gives me chills. So thrilling!

Golly, watching these make me miss Yuna! She was really one of a kind.

One thing that Jason has very similar to Yuna is really subtle and detailed arm movements -- not sure if that's a product of Rohene's choreography or what -- but that will be something to work with. One thing Jason had that Yuna didn't is his flexibility and line -- Yuna was not super known for either thing -- But really David really played up her strengths in a way that you didn't think too much about the line or whatever.

It will be interesting to see what David Wilson does with Jason's strengths -- line, flexibility, performance ability.

Darn, I missed the insta live, hopefully someone captured it and will post it, but sounds like it was a lot of fun!

Also, I'm so excited for the season to start! I love that Jason and Zhenya are competing at the same comps, their friendship is so cute :)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LoYEEIe2qKk <--- I believe this is the second half of the IG live.

ETA: I also watched the final group of 4CC with the new on-demand of NBC Sports Gold and it was nice to watch Jason's performance again. That program is still so lovely and beautiful. Kind of also crazy to watch and know now that was his final international competition with Kori. It's going to be really interesting to see what the K&C dynamic will be with Brian and the rest.

Also, if you don't want to watch 1:20 of TSL, I will note that Meagan Duhamel (who was the co-host for this video) seem pretty positive about Jason's prospects next season. She said that she felt that by making the move to TCC/Team Orser that he was taking a major ownership of his career which she felt would help him move forward.

Now that I’ve seen the IG Live clip on YouTube, does anyone else think Jason was just being polite when he said watermelon and bread sounded “refreshing”? ;) of course Jason being polite is anyone else showing enthusiasm:biggrin:

For me personally, watermelon and bread will be up there with kvass:disapp: Fruit and cheese, of course, is a time honored combo in many cultures.....

Since I know nothing about David Wilson choreo, those are my comments

He did not, however, hesitate to show his distaste for kvass, LOL.
(He was perhaps polite in finishing it LOL).

Ugh! I can't find the clip where it has him tasting it.
