Jason Brown

I don't think anyone expected Jason to magically have a quad at the start of the season. I don't think that was ever the goal. Jason has been pretty clear that he is thinking long term- I am sure he wants to get a consistent quad but it is all a part of a longer process. I think the initial goal was likely to stabilize his triple axel and other triples through modifications to his jump technique. Those modifications will likely apply to quads. So yeah, we probably aren't going to see a quad the first part of the season. But I wouldn't be surprised to see one later in the year. Whether or not it happens this season is not the most important thing- rebuilding confidence and stabilizing his jumps is.

I take everything I hear from TSL with a grain of salt. As LRK said, "It's safe to say that the quad isn't happening this season." is an opinion. Unless Dave is hanging out at TCC and having daily chats with Jason's coaches anything he says is an opinion. I was happy to hear the positive remark about his FS though- I am really looking forward to seeing it!

For me the question is what Dave really meant by that statement, bc as I said, he didn’t elaborate at all, and we don’t know the source. You could interpret it to mean they’ve given up, he’s hopeless with quads.

For what it's worth, having observed how things went with others my idea of how things would go with Jason and the quad in general, now that he is at TCC is as follows - the quad was never on the table for this season in the first place.

Brian is slow and careful. He'd make sure Jason is healthy, and then he'd secure his triples and make them the best possible, especially the 3A. Improve it if it is doable. And that is it for 2018/19. Brian doesn't rush (which has caused even disagreements before) but that is who he is and I don't see Jason as someone who would go up against him in this decision for this season. After all, there's no reason to and considering how last season went, I'd say psychologically, giving him a secure base is wise while they all get used to the new judging and trying to pull up Jason's triples to the +4, 5 area if possible.

Doesn't mean they won't poke the quad, or maybe even play with it later in the season (we have WTT and that's a stress free enviorment to go for it, or even 4CC maybe) but yes, I would read this as this season they don't plan on seriously attacking the quad.

@Seren, @Yatagarasu, thank you for your thoughts!

@Seren, I have to laugh because Dave is likely one of the only people who would expect Jason to make substantial progress on the quad in such a short period of time. I’m not sure if you listened to the recap, but the way he uses his voice changes rather dramatically in one brief sentence: from a light, positive, conversational tone (“his free skate is apparently beautiful”) to a rather dark one portending doom (“but the quad...isn’t happening”) - Macbeth, anyone?! :drama:

I agree with you that news about the FS is exciting and I can’t wait to see it...but I guess maybe Jason is taking his cue from Yuzuru in keeping silent. Actually, based on the clips of his recent benefit appearance, he also looks to have been watching Yuzuru’s hydroblades). :)

@Yatagarasu, thanks for that insight into Brian’s teaching style - it fits with what I expected this year, and also fits with what Brian said in an interview when the change was announced- roughly, we can help him with the technical, but we have to keep him healthy.

To your other point, in the past couple of years Jason has often gotten good jump GOE (+2s from judges) but it’s rarer that he gets +3s. So if they are able to improve the quality of his jumps this year so he starts getting +3s, 4s, and 5s, it will be a great first step.

Not skating related, but Jason just posted on IG he’s at the Nadal-Cilic match at Rogers Cup in Toronto. He has really good seats!

My tennis fan side of me is excited for him. Lol.

So Jason, I gave you a week off. Still no LP announcement.

But black hearts and thinking posts? Sheesh.....

What's a gal gotta do to get some real news?;)

And we can speculate about which coach will accompany him.:agree:

In fact, isn't next week Grant and Caroline's wedding? If he can take photos at a tennis match, he better take some photos there too!:)

I’m sure there will be photos, but not from the church. Grant mentioned that he and Caroline will have a “no-cell phone policy” at the church.

Ha ha - poor Jason looks exhausted - I feel bad for criticizing him for being boring. :)

Champs Camp speculation:

- He’ll arrive late and miss group photo (Grant’s wedding)
- He’ll have a little trouble with the altitude
- Brian won’t go (Stephen Gogolev JGP debut overlaps)

Wouldn't the protocol be for his primary coach to accompany him...?

As the primary coach is responsible for the vision and overall training program, and should be there to get the feedback and be accountable to his federation.

So, in Jason's case, would that not be Tracy Wilson?

Brian made it clear in his interview about Jason that he would be team coached and that although he and Tracy would officially be his head coaches, Lee and Karen would also be helping out: "We are going to take him on as a team so it is not just going to be one person working with him. I think on paper it will be Tracy and I as the main coaches but Karen Preston is going to work with him as will Lee Barkell. We can work with him technically, but we have to keep him healthy. He seems to be jumping in with both feet. It will all be new, but he will get the best of everything."

I take that to mean if Brian (I suspect he will choose being there for Stephen) and Tracy cannot go, either Lee (perhaps unlikely because of his other skaters doing the first couple JGPs), or Karen will accompany him. I've no idea what Tracy has on her plate. Hopefully, she will be available.

That looks like a Wheaten Terrier puppy! :luv17:  One of our late boys was a Wheatie and loved to nap on my partner's body like you see in the photo. Lucky pair getting time for cuddles in a rare moment off for Jason!

So now the question is .... whose dog? Is that Hamilton, is Jason in COS:scratch2: How far our boy has come from looking so uncomfortable with critters to actually dog sitting:biggrin:

I vote for Tracy, unless the China trip takes longer. She is responsible for Jason being at TCC after all:agree:

And please God do not let the new FP be a tango:noshake:

I thought Jason was always a dog person?

Anyway, it does look like Hamilton. Maybe Mille brought him to Toronto.. lol.

Yes, the primary coach is supposed to be there. But as Haleth pointed out, we don’t really know who that is in Jason’s case because of how Brian described his team coaching situation.

Tracy seems like the logical choice, and I really hope it is Tracy - I have so much respect for her, and really appreciate her for believing enough in Jason enough to make it possible for him to train at TCC.

That said, Lee Barkell and Karen Preston were both mentioned as part of Jason’ team too, so I suppose it could be one of them...but if Lee coaches both Corey and Conrad, who are in the second JGP, which I believe starts 8/29, it might not be a great time for him to leave them.

So as with his programs and 3A and Sr B - I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. :)

ETA it is not Hamilton - different color - and according to his story he’s just watching dog for day - but definite family resemblance! Haleth, it does look like a Wheaten. Mrs P, I always got the feeling that Jason grew up without pets and he looked so awkward holding that puppy at the media summit last year - remember?! But he clearly does like dogs.

I didn't think it was Hamilton either -- but the resemblance is uncanny. I bet it's the dog of the family he lives with.

I thought Jason enjoyed the dogs at the Media Summit, LOL. YMMV.

I'm putting my bet on Tracy Wilson being the one going to Champs Camp.
