Jason Brown

^ That was a great interview all around. I’m delighted to hear Brian thinks highly of Jason. I am curious what he means by “some success with the quad.”

The whole interview is worth a listen. Also Meryl is a really good interviewer!

I wonder if he’s landing it in TCC practises, doing much worse in competition practices, and then it’s totally not a thing for competition programmes? His overall jumping technique looks much more stable, though, and Brian did say he takes in everything and applies it. One thing that really stood out for me in terms of Jason’s transition from “the goofy kid who went viral” to “I am here to medal at Worlds, *RICKJAMESBLEEP*” is how much bigger and more assured the jumps are, which has made them more meaningful in the context of the programmes — the height, air position, confidence at takeoff and then the beautifully smooth landing. It wouldn’t surprise me if they’ve worked with Jason on his Salchow technique or to hear that Jason has landed some 4Sals at TCC, but it may be a little too new and unstable for him to hit them in competition practises. Lots of pressure, too, since “omg Jason, get a quad, looser” has been going around for years.

I wonder if we’ll see him hitting some, even if just in practise, later this season. Jason’s got to be feeling more confident after IdF and Golden Spin, and it may be that a little extra confidence is all he needs.

It was Interesting. Clearly, Brian has moved from.an "All Right Tracey He can Come" attitude to respecting Jason as an opportunity and a role model for TCC. The key is the statement that this quad' s system was built for Jason. So Jason has stuff to show other's as well as being a student.

The quad stuff sounds somewhat hopeful too.

I agree that Brian sounds much more “sold” on Jason.

What a difference six months can make. As opposed to OK Tracy loves him so we’ll fit in him, it’s a team approach to coacching, to the mayor of TCC:agree: Not to mention, which we all knew, but it appeared Brian needed to learn, what a hard worker Jason is.

And of course Meryl loves him too;)

Mayor Jason Brown has my vote anytime.
He must be really a ray of wonderful sunshine to everyone.

I’m imagining Mr. Rogers on ice and, honestly, I want to go to there.

I like the fact that you actually fit in a reference to *RICK JAMES BEEP* in your post. Also never would have expected that to be located in a post on the Jason Brown fan fest, but hey we live in new times.

In all seriousness, I agree that we can all agree the quad is still a mountain to climb, the jump quality has definitely gone up, especially on the 3A. And it's cool to see that he has the quality of the jumps and starting to put in some transitions to more of them. Watch the ACI FS and the Golden Spin FS back to back and the differences in the program are noteworthy even if you don't take all the errors at ACI into account.

As I said before, I think he's also improved his posture a bit, which is kind of noteworthy considering he never had a big posture problem to begin with. But there is a small adjustment and it's kind of brightened up things a bit. I don't know how to explain it.

It's the head position. I think it is essential for the jumps. And he's lost the frantic almost panicked quality that his skating developed last year, and that he was still battling with early this year. And this is all happening after only 6 mos. Brian was very diplomatic about the quad. He indicated strongly that it's going to take longer at Jason's age than it would if he was younger. He's accepted that Jason's current level of skill is serving him well under the new scoring and my guess is that they are not pushing the quad at all this year. He doesn't have to win Nationals. He has to be on the podium. And he is on track for that. At World's he needs to skate top 10. And he's on track for that also. Long term, he does need a couple of quads. And they are working on that. I think they've been handling him very well. They are clearly concentrating on skating skills, jump technique and confidence. And it's working!

I don't expect him to win nationals, but I think he can shake things up if the stars align a bit, just like he did at IDF. He does look very good for the podium. He's in a far better state leading up to Nationals than this time last season, when he had a subpar performance at the FS at GPF. Still, not assuming anything is a given though!

I think he can actually sneak into top 6 or higher with a good performance at Worlds. It all depends on how others do, but as it stands, his season's best is currently 7th and he hasn't even maxed out on the FS score yet.

All this talk abt position of the head got me curious. Is it the angle?? I watched a few 2015, 2016, 2017 vids still dont notice the head thingy. Too focused on the ponytail I guess, lol.
The difference in jumps after Jason got injured yes. He was struggling a lot OG season.
Then now after switching he 's improved the 3A especially.

2) what does " mayor of community" mean? The big bro who holds everyone together?
Yuzuru's supposed to be the big bro now that Javi is retiring but being too famous has drawbacks.

I think Nationals is going to be very interesting - more so than usual. You have a pretty much lately consistently clean Jason competing with an all-of-a-sudden NOT consistently clean Nathan and a never clean Zhou. Throw in a Camden Pulkinen who CAN be clean but generally has problems and has far better presentation than Zhou. And then there's always the chance of some young upstart having the skate of his life. I agree with Brian that the new scoring system levels the playing field for a skater like Jason. I'm just all kinds of happy that the quad isn't the total focus anymore (have I said that enough??:o:) Do I expect Jason to win Nationals? Not really but stranger things have happened. I really like Nathan and just wonder if his problems of late are the result of trying to balance school and skating and a coach who is thousands of miles away.

I just wish! wish! wish! Jason had moved to Brian several years ago. Makes you wonder what could have happened.

And to what Mrs. P just said about Jason not maxing out on his LP yet - think back to other years when Jason started the season slow and by Nationals had hit his stride. I think his SP is darn near perfect but his LP is still developing. It's a different type of choreo for him and I still don't cotton to the music, but I bet when he skates it at Nationals it's beautiful. (hope springs eternal)

My interpretation of "mayor of the community" is that Jason's upbeat personality and his caring for others makes him a natural leader - unlike Hanyu who seems to be more about himself than others (and I dont' mean that negatively - just factually IMO)

I agree. He is still leaving a lot of points on the table in the FS, both technically and in jump GOE, which is lower on average than his jump GOE in the SP. If he can address those things I think he even has an outside chance to medal at Worlds, depending on how others do.

@heleng, one of the specific things he’s mentioned working on is turning his head (left) faster to initiate rotation sooner on jumps. I’m not sure if that’s what he means by the position of his head or if it’s something else. Several people have mentioned noticing a difference in his posture, and if he’s regularly doing Pilates (there was a pic somewhere of him at a Toronto area Pilates studio) that would likely affect his alignment and the way he holds his head.

I really enjoyed the interview too (Also Meryl is a great interviewer). I think Brian is very positive about Jason and what he brings to their rink community. He is also very complimentary about how Jason takes in everything they tell him. Jason knows that retooling his technique is going to take time but he has the commitment to do it. That alone is praiseworthy. I think Jason is setting himself up nicely for Nationals and if he skates clean could definitely place well at Worlds- maybe not podium, but respectfully.

My guess is that he is probably landing the quad some in practice but not consistently yet. They are probably also seeing improvement with it even if he isn't landing it cleanly. He could also be landing it fully rotated and falling- who knows. I am sure they are working on it even if they don't plan on it being in the FS the rest of the year.

Honestly based on who Brain coaches and what quads they are doing successfully. Brian saying Jason is having "some" success actually seems like pretty high praise. At a minimum I suspect he is landing them in practices, but "some" success from Brian indicates he is landing them in some runthroughs... at least to me.

I don't know about Canadian English;), but in American English, "the mayor" often refers to the most outgoing or friendly person in the room. For example (and everyone can skip my boring slice of life story), spousal unit and I walk to the convenience store to get the NYTimes every day. Hey, we're old fogies. There is always one lady there hanging out, (not an employee) friendly, talks to everyone, knows where everything is. We call her "the mayor". So it's not that Jason is the most accomplished or oldest skater, but he's the one making everyone else at home. The mayor.:)

which for someone who's been there all of 6 months is pretty dang impressive. But Tracy knew that, she said at the beginning, she pitched Jason to Brian as an asset to the TCC community.

At 22-ish:laugh:
