Jason Brown

That's awesome!!! I've had several non-skating fans remark about Jason's performances and how he's brought "skating back to skating!" One in particular caught his Nationals freeskate and actually watched the Men's final from 4CCs. because Jason intrigued him. He had other observations, too, but......:noshake: It's also nice to see Kevin Aymoz up there on that list as well. Kind of makes you think the "casual or non-fan" doesn't care about quads and massive jumps. They want to see what Jason brings to the ice.

I am so glad he did so well here. Regarding Worlds, it will be super interesting to see how he handles the pressure of being considered a possible medal contender. I personally think it’s kind of a long shot given his lower BV and also given that most guys seem to really up their games for Worlds. But that doesn’t mean people won’t have expectations or that Jason won’t have expectations of himself. Just thinking back to how, unexpectedly, he was second in the SP last year. Although he’s never said, my own opinion is that it rattled him because he didn’t expect it, and that’s why he under performed as compared to 4CCs. This year he’ll be on notice, and hopefully will have enough time to deal with the idea and to be okay with any outcome as long as he skates well. :)

I know many people here aren’t fans of TSL, but they were definitely fans of Jason this week. For anyone who wants to listen, it starts at about 15:00. Dave did make an interesting comment about Jason and quads - that like Johnny Weir in his day, he often slows down on his approach and still doesn’t seem to believe he will land it. Not sure if that was true at Nats but it might have been at 4CCs. In any case, it was an interesting comment to me.

Finally, I saw that Novice Fan posted this in the Zhenya thread and I thought I’d bring it over here: :)

I agree that at Nats he just went for it. At 4CCs, he thought about it. He needs to stop thinking. But that's HARD! Brian calls it trusting your training. I've heard him say it to Yuzu when he skates clean and well. "You trusted your training." Jason needs to trust his training. He's getting there.

Jason's goal at World's is to keep 3 spots for US men. If Vince should falter, then he's likely to feel the pressure. I think the bigger challenge is that he wants the best for both Nathan and Yuzu, but he just needs to focus on himself and see how it goes. I expect that Tracy will be working long and hard with him to get him to that mind place. Jason loves going to World's, and his lower base value does put the pressure on to skate as close to perfectly as he can. It will be interesting to see how he handles the various pressures. So far he's reached his goals this year. Helping Team USA to keep their spots is the last one. That can be accomplished with a top 10 finish. He doesn't need to medal. I want to see him skate clean and well and execute high quality elements. That would be fantastic!

Good news on the Season's Best! Thanks, Doris!

I listened to that and it was very positive all around towards Jason.

Since I apparently never posted in here during 4CC, CONGRATS TO JASON on his SILVER MEDAL! Although I wasn't happy at all that he popped the quad, and neither was he from what he said at the press conference, I'm thrilled that he is looking good and seems to still have the positive attitude that he showed at Nationals. He seems to be in a good place now and that makes me happy.

Question. Does anyone know who Jason is working with on jumps now that Barkell is gone? Has anything been said about him working with Ghislain?

And just to sneak in while we still have the warm fuzzy glow (well, I do:biggrin:)

With that SB, from an international panel, Jason would have won Euros.:agree: And that's with the lowballing of the PCS scores in his SP.

Oh for the days of Dick Button when Euros was available for American men:laugh:

Jason is in the mix for top 6 at World's but no pressure! I'll be a nervous wreck! Better for me to be nervous than Jason.

I know, it took me a few days to post, too!

I am guessing Jason works on jumps mostly with Karen Preston, who is his third listed coach. I haven’t heard anything about Ghislain, and at 4CC I didn’t see him at the boards for Jason (in contrast, he was there for Jun and Yuzu).

@bookseller, I am not sure top six at Worlds would be much pressure for Jason so don’t let it make you anxious! I agree with Ross74 that he wasn’t too happy at popping the quad, so I’d guess improving that will be a big focus. I don’t see him worrying much about maintaining 3 spots. It’s true he’s a team player, but since Nathan is highly unlikely to place lower than second, Jason/Vincent can still place as low as 11th. I think the challenge for Jason right now is to focus on reaching his own full potential, which to me starts with landing a quad in competition. Beyond that I think it means being able to see himself simultaneously as a very nice, loving person and as someone who is potentially competitive at a World level. JMO, but when you win or push for the top you need a certain ruthless quality - because ultimately if you win, someone else loses. I don’t think Jason is in any danger of winning worlds this year, and he’s pretty much a long shot to medal. But I do think that in order to get there, he’s got some work to do mentally. :)

I think the challenge with Jason is to make sure he keeps his competitive focus and skates to win, even when he can't. You can see from all those clips of the post gala at 4CCs that Yuzu is super nice too. But when he skates, he skates to win! And he should. And so should Jason. But I always get nervous when Jason skates. And from where I'll be sitting, I won't be able to see that except on the jumbo tron. So we'll see. I expect that practice at TCC over the next few weeks will be very high intensity for the World's bound skaters. They all have work to do to accomplish what they want to accomplish.

As for Jason's jump coach, Karen probably does still work with him and also I think Brian. Ghislaine has said openly that skaters can't master quads if they don't have them already by 18 or 19 (I don't remember which) so he is unlikely to be working with Jason at this point. I know that Jason's said that Yuzu gives him pointers. He never talks about Karen anymore, so who knows? Someone should ask him. It's a good interview question! Whoever is working with him has greatly improved his jump technique, so they should be getting some credit.

Just watched Jason's skate at the 4CC Gala. I thought he might have toned down his EX since the Men's Free Skate was just a couple of hours earlier, but it doesn't appear that he did. All 4 split jumps were there, but more importantly, he just looks really happy. This is a blurry screen shot from the start of his EX, but I can'at help it, I love this smile. https://imgur.com/a/gKMDFhx

I think Jun was absent from the IG post because Yuzu and Jason are holding their medals, and it was a medalist and coach photo op:)

Can’t wait to see all three at Worlds:thumbsup:

I need background.

What I know about anime. Zip. What I know about Sailor Moon. Less than zip. :)

And it’s one of those things where Google starts out “Kunzite is one of the whatever’s from the such and such place” and I have no idea what they’re talking about.

But a villain, definitely playing against type;)

Sailor Moon is one of the most iconic anime ever, and this ice show is part of its 20th anniversary celebration. It's a huge deal, Sailor Moon has a huge fanbase around the world, spanning several generations. I bet many fans who don't necessarily follow figure skating will be interested in this show.

I'm sure it'll be a very fun experience for Jason!

OMG he's going to play Lord Kaspar!! :luv17: Awwww!!! (PS: Kunzite is known as Lord Kaspar in Italy)

Lots of memories here... I can't wait, SOOOO exciting!

A power-hungry villain! I bet he’ll be great and this will be a great show. Too bad we probably won’t get to see much.
