Jason Brown

Jason not listed as a US entry for the Autumn Classic:(

I wonder if he will do any summer comps. Quite a change from the days when he did local comps and multiple Challengers.
Looks like neither Jason nor Nathan have challenger assignments. That probably makes a lot of sense in an Olympic year. So we wait for SCI and hope that it happens.

Maybe our top 2 men will be at Japan Open? If the event is happening (which I guess is very uncertain), I don't think it's outside the realm of possibility that Jason and Nathan would get the invite?

I can’t imagine he’ll go into Skate Canada cold, but I would be really surprised if he did summer comps. He just tweeted a clip of himself doing a high impact off-ice warmup, which is good, but the fact he’s not listed for Autumn Classic makes me wonder what’s up. I’m curious if it’s because he’s behind in his training due to injury, just trying to peak later in season, or if strategically he wants to go to Asian Open (Olympic qualifier). Technically he could still go to either Finlandia or the Asian Open, but regardless of the fact it’s the Olympic qualifier, Asian Open would be cutting it really close with jet lag and travel time. Assuming it’s not canceled.

I’m guessing his tweet was a way of preempting questions about why he’s not listed for Autumn Classic, but it doesn’t fully answer mine.
Some of that footage is not new. I don't recall having seen the off ice 3A footage before. But the stair hopping is not current. Also, apparently the list of competitors is not final on the Challengers. The official list has not been posted. So we'll see!

Thanks for mentioning that some of the footage isn’t new - I wasn’t aware of it.

You’re right that the US assignments page isn’t complete - they usually update info on challengers right after the assignment deadline for each comp. But the lists for Lombardia, US Classic, and Autumn Classic are final so he won’t be added to any of those comps.

Oh god it's all so confusing! It would be unusual to see him go into a grand prix with no senior B, then again he managed ok in 19-20 after his concussion made him withdraw from Nebelhorn - maybe they're just trying to pace properly for the Olys... I think Champs Camp is this weekend, so I wonder if we'll get any snippets or bts clips... Cue frantically stalking all the US skaters instagram stories for a few days!

Madison Chock posted from Sun Valley, so she's not in Canada at the moment. One would assume that the border crossing issues are not major at the moment. If Jason is scheduled for Sun Valley, that makes sense if he's planning to be at Champs Camp. I guess we'll just have to wait and see!

It would be great if we’d get some champs camp stuff. 😊

Re 2019-20: He did great at Nats and 4CCs, but (not surprisingly) was kind of a mess during the first half of the season, despite the fact that he won a couple of medals. But in that case, they really didn’t have much choice but to go in cold - if I recall he later said the concussion was still impacting him.

On the other hand, thinking back to the last Olympic season, he did quite a lot of comps that fall, including GPF, but he was a mess for different reasons.

Maybe they’re trying to do things differently this year, to clearly differentiate this Olympic season from the last one. If I recall, at some point after the fact, he said that Nats 2019 - his first Nats after the disaster of 2018 - was a bit of a hurdle he had to clear. I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a bit of that at play this season, too.

I guess we can only wait and see.

Also, I am going to try an optimistic spin (don't laugh too loud;)), this is the first year Jason has skated two "old" programs. He doesn't need to put "Sinnerman's List" out there for judges to see.

And although he said there are some twists, no completely new Rohene choreo to master:biggrin:

Yabbut, he did say there are changes to SL- and of course there’s the quad thing. I should think he’d want at least one chance to try that out before Skate Canada.

But then again, what do I know? 😂

We don't KNOW anything yet, but we are making educated guesses or expressing confusion based on previous seasons. It is true that this is the 1st time that he is using 2 earlier programs, so the judges are familiar with them. He will be scrutinized carefully for those quads, but my guess is that he'll aim for clean, intricate, well executed skates and not rely on big numbers from quads. But we do know that he has mastered them in practice and wants very much to land them clean and fully rotated in competition. It's no small task! He has to get past his own head to do that with confidence. But he's proved that he can do that! He's going to show us what he can do this year. I personally think he'll be great!

I hope not. Team NA has only ever (to my knowledge) had two countries and sometimes all skaters were from the USA. We as a sport have a third country that can be included in Team NA, and i very strongly feel Donovan Carrillo should be invited. It is good for the sport to grow to more countries and this is a way to celebrate that.

It’s a nice thought, but I kinda doubt JSF is thinking about growing or celebrating the sport in other countries when it invites skaters to participate.

As to Jason, specifically, I hope he’s not going. Much as he loves Japan and as good as the money is, he almost never skates well there, jet lag would impact his training after he returns to TCC, and the comp doesn’t count for purposes of world standing points or seasons best scores. JMO.

I noted that two TCC skaters are doing ACI, so it was clearly a deliberate decision to not have Jason skate there. I think many of the potential Olympic Team skaters are giving most challengers a miss this year. There are exceptions, of course. Some skaters need the international points. But I suspect that they are pacing themselves differently this year. My guess is that TCC is focused on keeping Jason focused, calm, confident and strong for best results in his quest for Team USA. I suspect that Team Raf is doing the same for Nathan.

Not to divert, but Nathan never did as many summer comps as Jason. He would do US Classic in SLC, I suspect because it was a trip home. This year no SLC, no US Classic. He never skated many Challengers or any summer comps, and hey, it worked for him(y)

But I agree that TCC has young Canadian skaters who need the experience at ACI more than Jason. I will be anxiously awaiting any sign that Jason is at Champs Camp. :)

One of his Japanese fans posted something in Japanese regarding Champs Camp, but I couldn't translate it. Maybe it was mentioned in the Zoom chat?

Jason’s latest instagram stories have said that he’s off to champs camp this weekend! He’s also doing a live q&a at the moment, so we might get some more titbits!

Edit: He was asked about his favourite programmes and he said “Current ones and can’t wait to perform them this fall”.
