Jason Brown

Random thought:

The US judge at Skate Canada does not seem to be a big fan of Jason’s. She awarded him GOE on the low end for most elements in both programs and awarded him much lower PCS than Nathan. I was curious and googled her. She is a former competitive skater, the wife of the chairman of Macy’s (ie rich, I’m sure), and very involved with FS in Harlem and Ronald McDonald House.

Anyone who isn’t impressed with Jason seems to have an ally in Ms. Lundgren. But at least they can’t say US is propping him up.
I noticed that the US judge was being very critical. And she wasn't necessarily unfair. But she was not propping him up. He is definitely not at his peak at the moment. But, this time, it was enough. He was not going to overtake Nathan. 2nd place was the goal. And he got there. Nathan hasn't peaked either. It's an interesting season.

Interesting season is right! I didn't think Nathan looked his usual confident self. I also think Vincent probably had the skate of his life at SA so we'll just have to see if he can sustain that level of consistency (which has been a problem in the past.) I think I've become almost anti-quad because there has been so much emphasis on it and other than a few of the top elite skaters, it almost always ruins a program. Too much emphasis on that jump and less on the overall skate. I'm probably old school in that I appreciate Jason's skating more than the total jumpers. If he wants to master that jump, so be it. BUT, I do agree with Kurt that unless he has more than 1 quad it really isn't going to do much in the final analysis. And as we saw this past weekend, it probably hurts him unless it's totally clean. Jason did not have a good skate in Canada. When was the last time he flubbed a spin? And when was the last time he fell on his 3Axel (it's been a couple of years IIRC) Let's hope he and his coaches have a takeaway from that competition and move forward!

Jason with a clean quad, does have an advantage over skaters who have one or two clean quads. But the incidence of consistent clean quads from anyone is uncommon except for a handful of skaters. I think Kurt did finalize his remarks at one point by saying "Get a quad Jason." Of course, if he gets one, the naysayers will complain that he only has one. But most of the skaters only have one. They may try more than one. They very rarely land more than one. And it does detract from the program. In this case, I don't think Jason's under-rotated quad detracted much, but the fall on the 3A and the spin error did. I attribute these errors to the injury and lack of confidence in that program. I think he should keep trying to land that quad with full rotations and on one foot. He's got EVERYTHING ELSE! That's the only thing he lacks. One consistent quad. That's it!

And when was the last time he fell on his 3Axel (it's been a couple of years IIRC)
On a positive note, it's better to rotate and fall than pop into a single. He may have not fallen, but he popped the axel at US Nationals 2021 and at the World Team Trophy. He had this thing of popping axels when he was not at his peak. This season he at least rotated all 6 of them--I see this as a big plus. At Worlds he also had two not very good axels out of the three, but managed to land them.

And on a lighter note:

Jason looks back with chagrin on his straightened hair. With a part. (about halfway through, worst haircuts.)

That was very informative commentary. I knew that Jason was injured this summer, but if Beverly is correct he broke a bone in his foot and was off ice for 6 or 7 weeks. That's a lot more than a tweak to the foot! It explains a lot about what is going on. I also noted that Kurt comments that the non jumping portion of the program seems muted and doesn't show off Jason's skills. We are all in agreement on that. I wonder what happened with the choreo? Let's hope they fix it before France.
Don’t know who Beverly is

The exhibition was to "Melancholy" and was particularly wonderful. I swear, even Jason's eyelashes are exactly choreographed to the music

💗💗💗💗💗💗
That’s funny. Melancholy was beautiful!!!

I believe that Bookseller may have inadvertently misspoke, and was referring to Brenda Irving, who did the commentary with Kurt Browning on CBC in the clip posted earlier. In that clip, she said Jason was off the ice for two months with a broken foot.

Canadian Broadcasting Co bio of Brenda Irving
I prefaced that remark by saying the "if Brenda was correct" because I don't know if she actually had access to the facts. But if her statement was correct, that injury was more serious than a "tweak to the foot." I hope I didn't misspeak. I don't know who Brenda is either or where she got her information, but it was certainly interesting.

It’s possible Jason was off the ice that long because there were pictures of him outside, but not skating. Regardless, he is slowly recovering and we hope he will continue to get stronger.

I‘m sorry, I didn’t mean misspeaking about what was actually said in the clip!
It appeared as though there was confusion as to whether her name was Beverly or Brenda, and that is what I meant when I said misspeaking.

I actually think that Brenda probably has some information on which to base her comment, because I doubt that a CBC broadcaster is sitting around listening to TSL. But it doesn’t really matter at this point because what we all want is for Jason to be recovered, and to show that in his next competition. :)

I could easily have confused the name. I didn't double check that before I posted. But whoever that was, Beverly or Brenda, did announce that he was off training for almost 2 months, which is very significant. Overall Jason looked strong and well trained, except for the 3As. He should be in better shape for France. So far the season is going pretty well. I hope that gives him confidence.

Personally, I still prefer the orginal version - it felt more personal. Perhaps I will change my mind as time goes on.

As for the quad: fixed in my mind is still that very beautiful, very wonderful attempt in Stockholm. That was our preview, that was our demonstration of what can be. All he needed was a little more confidence, a little more time. I am sure he will get there. He stood up in Vancouver, albeit with a sticky leg, but I am sure we will see a better attempt in France, with better 3As, and then we can start making better judgements.

Still, imagine the wild reactions if Jason licks the stamp and sends it on the 4F.
I loved the mid section in the first program of SL. When he goes closer to the judges with his hand up and looks up - none of that now. I like the new middle sec music, but not the steps. I guess they need to bring David Wilson back-in to fix this. More drama is needed.

Me, too. What I think is interesting is that they retained the “stop” movement, as a transition into the second section but it’s no longer dramatic. I also noticed that the opening jump order is different. It was 3A-2T, 4T, 3A, stop. In Canada it was 4S, 3A, 3A-2T stop, and it just didn’t work as well with the music. To be fair, it’s possible they changed it so he had the best chance of getting the 4S out, and based on the planned program content, the combination would have been second but for the fall. So maybe that’s why the new section just seemed so amorphous. I guess we’ll see what he does next time.

Now that you all are mentioning it, I do remember thinking when I first saw SL, "Wow, this is so beautiful." Like it had so much emotion to it. The new version, while I still think it's beautiful, it doesn't have that emotion that makes you watch and go, "Wow, how amazing..." But, yeah, we'll see. I'm almost sure they're working on it and it will look better clean.

Now I am obsessing, but I am trying to figure out if Jason's hair is short enough for this to be a recent clip?

Also, Jason, "You Don't Know Me" is a country song memorably covered by Ray Charles. Not that (yes I am in full skating grandma mode :) )

I was cleaning out some old files and ran into this gem! I was shooting Shoma's practice but getting little bits and pieces of Jason too. Love the part at the end where Shoma is jogging to get out of Jason's way!!!! Wow, ponytail and all, 5 years ago. Thx for all the memories guys!

It was asking me to sign in so I didn't see it. But Shoma and Jason used to fool around a lot and were frequently at the same competitions. It was fun to see them together. The first live comp that I went to was SKAM in Chicago and Shoma was there and Shoma won and Jason came in second. Adam Rippon was 3rd and the after medal ceremony romp on the ice was epic. They couldn't get them off. It was hilarious. Shoma started it. They were making sure to talk to everyone in the crowd in the stands who wanted to talk to them. And they were goofing around together.

I remember this so well. It was SO funny. Eventually, Shoma listened and left the ice. Of course, Jason had to keep talking to his fans. Finally Kori yelled "Jason Brown, you are grounded!!!!" Everybody was dying laughing! I think they were waiting for the guys to come to the press conference, and they couldn't get them off the ice. Such fun memories! I remember Jason had a beautiful skate at that competition.
