Jason Brown

Jason might co-write a book with Charlie White about making individual sports a positive experience for all students. And about exiting elite sport.

Charlie impressed me so much in this podcast of Polina Edmunds'

Great podcast!

Tracy thinks Jason could be a coach

“What he brings cannot be ignored,” Wilson said. “He could teach clinics for every step sequence and position details. He is integral to what the sport needs.”:

What are the working visa requirements for Canada? :)
It will be interesting to see where he goes and what he decides to do. He'll be great, whatever he decides. I'm sure that Tracy has been encouraging him to stay in skating and share what he knows. Back in the day, skaters did ice shows. That's not possible anymore in Canada and the US. But teaching, coaching, mentoring, commentary are real possibilities.

Wow! Thank you for that link! It's Jason at his most honest self in a press conference. I love how he highlighted the volunteers and how welcome they all make him feel. And we now know that he's remaining at the games for another 10 days (from the news conference) and can hang out with his fellow team mates, cheer them on and enjoy the games. No rushing off. Nathan has said the same thing about World's, that he'll make his decision after talking to his coaching team. They both were so focused on this event, I'm sure neither one of them gave much thought as to the next and how they will deal with it. Jason said honestly that being first alternate is hard. As much as I'd love to see Jason at World's and see his incredible skates again, it would mean that he would be going right back into training at full bore. Hopefully Nathan will decide as soon as he has time to process what's happened at these games, but he's under no obligation to do so. We will see! As we have seen before, Jason takes his time making major decisions, which is a good thing. When he decides to commit, he really commits!

I hope Jason writes a book some day. He's got such a unique perspective and a unique career. And it might help him to process all of it in the writing. At the moment, I feel a lot like Jason. Jason brought me into the sport fandom with his Riverdance skate at Nats. My life hasn't been the same since. I've followed him avidly, gone to competitions which I never thought possible, learned a lot about skating and became invested in some other skaters over the last 8 years. Whether his retirement is now, or a year from now, that part of my life is probably headed into retirement too. On one hand you feel sad and wonder what's next. And on the other hand, you feel like it's time to move on. For him, it's his whole life that will change. But I am so grateful to him for giving me this diversion and passion for skating for the last 8 years. It kept me sane and gave me some wonderful experiences and memories. And I'm eager to see what he does next. But the end of an era is inevitably coming and I'm glad that he'll take time to process and think about it. And in the meantime, they will all have the fun of touring together with SOI, and I will have the joy of seeing them!
Yes, I’d like to see Jason write some books about his career and also about positive training in sports. Had he moved on sooner in his career, things may have been easier for him. I’m excited for him and his future.

The coaching ice dance could be a real possibly for Jason. It is the most complicated division of figure skating. He could leave jumps behind and move on to the beautiful footwork and lifts of ice dance.

I don't mind Vincent being invited, and obviously Boyang was always going to be invited. But Keegan and Morisi over Jason is just a downright insult.
Do skaters not invited to the gala have access to practice ice? I saw a report that Nathan Chen is practicing his Mozart program for the gala, but no indication of other (men so far) getting ice time. The non-invited skaters need to be training for Worlds. Jason is 1st alternate so he should be training. Does he leave Beijing or stay for the closing ceremony?

Do skaters not invited to the gala have access to practice ice? ...

Yes, they do have access, per Jackie Wong:

And the schedule (for local time in Beijing) shows four daily sessions of men's "Additional Practice" (ADD) through Sat Feb 19 (starting on Fri Feb 11, which was the day after individual men's FS).
I think the ADD sessions are the ones that would be accessible no matter who does or does not have a gala invitation.
The ADD sessions are in the practice rink, which makes sense.

(In addition, on Fri Feb 18 and on Sat Feb 19, there is one practice session in the main rink designated for men's exhibition.)

Anecdotally, Jackie tweeted about a session with Kondratiuk and Carrillo, as well as Kagiyama and Uno. Plus Messing.

Nathan is not the only one getting ice time.

At first I was so excited when I heard from Jackie that Donovan had practice ice: gala, maybe? But then so did Mark K., and with all due respect to Mark who worked very hard through four skates, his exhibition is not techno mariachi;)

But my guess is also that this is the best ice Donovan has been able to practice on for months, so he is taking advantage.

Back to Jason, he is staying even though his particular comp is over. He is very busy playing the Team USA hype man, and I wouldn’t be surprised if his stay was extended for that. :)

ETA: Jason at speedskating today. More in his IG stories or on the Japanese Fan Club Twitter page:

Time to catch up! We've had house guests for a week so I haven't watched any skating or videos. I have read some pbp threads so I know how things turned out. I'm so happy for Jason that he was able to put out two excellent programs at these Games, programs with which he seems very happy. He made it to Beijing, he skated well, and he appears content. That's all I wanted. I never expected him to finish in the Top 6 so that's a huge bonus. Hope he's having a blast watching the other events. ♥️

He'd be a great ice dance coach.

But before that I hope that he carries on skating singles for a little bit longer.

Then, after finishing singles, that he does a Daisuke, and switches to ice dance competitor - he'd be amazing.

Can I say something gently about Jason as an ice dancer?

Of course, he would be amazing (presuming he bulked up and found a tiny partner). ;)

But the US is not Japan with regard to ice dancing. The US is super strong in ice dancing, has incredible depth, and ice dancers who have been training ice dancing for years. Jason/Jason's partner would not be able to get international assignments (as much as I would love to see him skate until he's 40).

Let him train other men's singles and hope that on some level, somewhere, they can learn the skills of Jason Brown.

Jason said that right now, he is only thinking about what events to watch in his time at the Olympic Village. I'm sure he'll be in the stands for every skating event. I don't know if Tracy is still in Beijing. Probably not. If he decides to keep the position of 1st Alternate (and he has not decided on that) he'll get practice time after the Olympics is over. Unless Nathan decides not to go to World's, which is possible but not something to expect, Jason is unlikely to be called. And I get the sense that he's ok with that. He doesn't have to make a formal statement of retirement and he still needs to get back to Canada and talk to Brian and Tracy and do whatever he needs to do with his living quarters there. But first he wants to spend time with his family. In that video that I posted, he says he never talks about skating with his family. He needs the break. And I think he is looking forward to that when he leaves Beijing.

Jackie Wong on Jason at the Olympics (we always knew Jackie was a fan. :) )

...an all-triples Brown finished in the top 6 and scored higher than multiple guys who landed quads in their programs. This is where the quality of his elements and the extreme amazing goodness of his skating were rewarded to the utmost.

Had he not doubled his triple salchow in the free skate, he would have finished fourth and right off the podium. But that’s not the point. The judges finally opened their eyes and saw the beauty through the noise.
