Javier Fernandez

Sorry about the interview, Mizar. I was really hoping to hear how it went! I was excited for you.

I fully expected Javi to retire after the Olympics next year. I didn't expect him to stick around so I am surprised to hear him say he might retire, lol!!

Glad it is just a bruise on his bone and rest will be enough to heal it. He has a couple of months before World's so it should be ok.

Javi, Carolina Kostner, Tomas Verner and Michael Huth attended a training session on Sunday while still at Euros, organized by the Czech Skating Academy for their students. I'm guessing this took place sometime before the gala.

So apparently when Tomas introduced Javi to the kids, he said Javi would only be skating around the rink because of his injury, but eventually Javi gritted his teeth and pulled out a flying spin, but it was evident he was in pain. Otherwise he just joined Carolina's edge excercise. Really Javi? A flying spin is the best way to heal a bruised bone? Athletes are completely crazy... :palmf: Such a nice gesture though from Javi and Carolina to join this session!

Photos and a video on the Academy's Facebook page.

Oh no, Mizar - so sorry to hear that :( Keep trying, though. He is going to be in Spain for most of the week it seems, and might have a moment at some point (even with all the big media getting interested).

I was at the small medal ceremony and it was kind my Javi moment for this competition. There is usually always a Q & A involved and amazingly few people have anything to ask. I had a question, of course ;) and got to present it... It was about being able to communicate with their coaches, especially if things are going bad (inspired by Javi at Paris doing a not a very happy face towards Brian in FS) during the performance. Now, I hope that the Spanish girl standing next to me will put it on YT for all to see, but what he said was that usually he does not look at people, not even ones he knows are there (like his family etc), because it can cause his concentration to go. But he can hear Brian shouting and making noise should he need the encouragement. I *think* he said that because, as always he looks you in the eyes when he speaks to you and even though it was some 5 m between us, I could barely concentrate on listening what he had to say

It was good to hear that the fall did not cause that big an injury - he walked ok and skated on Sunday (see also links below). Plus he seemed relaxed and happy - if he was concerned for an injury, he probably would have not been quite so happy... Javi left Ostrava bright and early to go to Madrid where there was a reception by the Consejo Superior de Deportes in the afternoon (if I understood correctly, the medal will be on display at the Museo del Deporte for a little while?). In the evening there was an award gala by the Madrid sports press association and he received the prize for the best individual athlete for 2016. On Wednesday there is that TV show, El Hormiguero (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_Hormiguero) and on Thursday maybe some event with La Liga and LaLiga4Sports. Back to Canada on Saturday (this according to a Hielo Espanol story). Hopefully in between he will have time to relax and be with family and friends, too!!

Many people seemed annoyed that the historic victory was not noted on the covers or even pages of the major newspapers - only Nadal and football got covered on Sunday... A lot of stuff did appear on the net, though! This cartoon as a comment:

Went through the net and collected some of the videos, pics and articles for the Europeans. In roughly chronological order... Hope all the links work - FB ones have become a bit tricky it seems.

Gotta love him saying he likes to be at 60% for Euros! Well, sadly that's very accurate... :ohwell: The entire European men's field can be defeated by Javi running on 60%, and that's pretty much what he gave in his FS. But I have to say I was very happy to see his SP at 90+%! I've rewatched it a couple of times now that the thrill of seeing it live in the arena is a few days behind. THIS is how Malaguena should be performed in its full glory, with the power and sharpness that had been missing earlier this season finally back!

Also, this performance of Malaguena made me realize I actually prefer this costume to the red one. As beautiful and fiery that was, this one lets us see the arm and body movement much more clearly, and the fake suspender lines nicely accentuate his body shape. It's definitely a more risky choice, because the plainness of costume itself does't sell the program, Javi has to fill it with his performance. I also think his hair works better this way, with the beard. His hair slicked back doesn't go well with this costume. Please keep it for Worlds!

Next season Javi needs to be about 90 % at Europeans, because the Olympics are next month.

I liked his new sp costume already at first sight this season and it was great to watch such a good Malagueña performance from the Europeans.

I'm watching the TV program which is Javi in right now and  He's adorable:luv17: They asked him about if his rivals do something to stop him winning and he was like Nooo, but he heard about some skaters doing vudu  or putting silicone in the blades of other... It's a pity that they didn't ask him more about skating:sarcasm:
Edit: I'm a bit mad because the program lasted like 1 hour and they showed Javi like 15 min and they did other things... I want him to get the recognition he deserves here and then they do that:palmf:

Voodoo? Yes, I can see that some people might try that... but voodoo only works if the person being cursed actually believes it can work, lol. Silicone? Never heard of that one before, but I know nasty things have happened. There is a reason why skaters always keep their skates with them...

About the voodoo thing, he said that he knows about one skater who gave to another one a voodoo doll ( which was the skater himself crying), and that skater did very poorly at the programs and lost the title, and it was not many years ago, Javi was skating already. And the same people who did the voodoo doll go to visit warlocks who tell them which color they should use for their costumes among other creepy things, and they win the competitions:palmf:

I have understood that there exists some superstition among skaters, as well as among other people, like e.g. Friday, the 13th, etc... But voodoo in these days sounds really odd...

Managed to see most of it despite the not a very good stream. The interview part could have been much longer indeed - I wonder what is the norm for that program because a lot of people commented on the shortness of the interview? He did not skate despite the tweet from the ice company and at the end when he had to walk fast across the studio floor, he held the injured area... He had the medals and his skates with him; the boots are starting to look very worn on the outside! Hope they last until the end of the season. And he had had a haircut :ohwell:

Here's the section for the nasty tricks which should be available openly:

The norm for the program is always the same: the first section are 15-20' with the interview to the guest, and after that different sections with games and so where the guest takes part

Thanks! In that case I wonder about the complaints, because that's just about what they got... They did not have time for a skating sequence, though :rolleye::

Today it was announced that LaLiga4Sports will be Javi's and Carolina Marin's personal patron/sponsor and that they will be ambassadors for La Liga in countries like India and Japan. This apparently means also that real money is involved (which is great)!

And Carolina and Javi being tested on what they know of each other: https://twitter.com/deportegob/status/827212590241742848 [this was also posted by a "yuzuvier" fan after cutting away the kisses on the cheek between Carolina and Javi - too much I guess ]

So, apparently all's fine in the end.

Last night Javi followers on the internet reached a couple of milestones - 40 000 on FB (already past 41 000 by now!) and 100 000 on Instagram.

I only started to follow him in the 2014-5 season, probably liked his FB in early 2015? Then it was about 3 500 persons (he celebrated the 3 500 on January 19, 2015), 10 000 mark was reached in December 2015. On Twitter 25 000 in November 2014 and now 62 700+.

I first saw him sign his name in Stockhom at the Europeans in 2015 and thought to myself "this guy has not been writing his name much, has he?!" - like every letter readable, took his time sigining (this seemed a little surprising to me he was after all the triple European champion at the time). In Marseille in December 2016 his name had been reduced to the initials and a wavy line.

A lot has changed in just little more than two years (everybody truly loves a winner?!), but I for one am happy for every new fan and all the adoration he is receiving now - Javi deserves it all!! :hap10:

So happy and relieved to read that!!! Sounds like he won't have to miss any training then. Does anyone know if he has any shows or other engagements between now and Worlds? (Hopefully he doesn't and training can finally be his only focus in the next 7 weeks...)

I know only of the Ice Chips 2017 in Boston, but that is after the Worlds: https://icechips.org/ So, a clear coast for concentrating on getting ready for the Worlds.

A couple of stories about Javi arriving in Madrid without getting a reception by fans or the Spanish media has been going round a lot and Hielo Espanol gives some explanations: https://www.instagram.com/p/BQDChy1DiIA/ (this is kind of funny considering all the media attention that he did get with the CSD reception and the gala event later in the very day etc. And who could have known WHEN excatly he arrives in Madrid?!)

Here is the full video from the TV show Javi went on last week: El Hormiguero

Poor guy, I felt sorry for him when it was shoved into his face that his 5th European title only merited a tiny bottom strip on the front page of Marca. :ohwell: Being from a country where football is also ridiculously popular, I always scowl at the fact that virtually every other sport is suffering as a result, in terms of funding, recognition, everything. Still, I can't imagine a circumstance where anyone winning a 5th European title in whatever insignificant sport wouldn't get a decent front page coverage in sports papers. :rolleye:
