Javier Fernandez

I feel so lucky I saw Touch of Evil in Helsinki. It's just so different than anything else I've seen and I can't imagine anyone else pulling it off.

Yes, it has fantastic choreography!!! But I also like Danny Boy very much. Those both programs are different from his other gala performances.

I adore both Touch of Evil and Danny Boy, because they are brilliant programs in their own right, and because both prove that while it's tempting to categorize Javi as the showman, the entertainer of such programs as Chaplin, Sinatra, Black Betty and so on, there's much more to this guy than that.

Forgive me, if it was posted, but anyone has a link to non commentary Touch of Evil?

I like that reference to "programs" - in the plural form. So with both the SP and FS music selected, hopefully we will hear soon about what they are? ;)

Perhaps he might even be working on a new EX, since the ice shows will start soon :cheer:

Javi will receive a wax figure in the Museo de Cera in Madrid to honor his achievements. For any local forum users - there will be an event on May 3rd to take Javi's measurements for the wax figure. :)

I think this is wonderful! I'm so happy all of this is happening for Javi! He really deserves it.

I'm going to Madrid in August. I wonder if it'll be ready by then so I can visit.

In Canada, preparing his new programs for next season:

He looks happy and relaxed, great!

Javi in wax is funny and cool - particularly as we probably love him most for his movement  I'd love to be there for the measuríng session... One more site to visit on that Javi pilgrimage to Madrid one day!

On my way to work, the bus was kind of slow and I started thinking of my favourite Javi moments this season... Top 3 would be sth like this (what's yours?!)

1. No question about this: Worlds SP, the perfect Malagueña. Those jumps, that performance. Whoah!

2. Danny Boy in the GPF gala. So much emotion there both on ice and in the audience...

3. Touch of Evil at Worlds Gala. I thought I'd never get to see that live...

No FS moments there - Elvis was an ok program, but apart from the Rostelecom performance, never got truly off the ground. Kudos though to David Wilson for the Fever section where the choreo parts were made so seductive that I really usually forgot it was all about the jumps.

I saw him skate in 4 competitions which was just amazing (my vacation days and travel budget went completely to FS this winter ), as an enormous added bonus got to meet him in Marseille (thanks to my Japanese Yuzu fan friend!) and to ask him a question in the Europeans FS small medal ceremony Q&A. Extra special was also getting to meet tureis and evergreen in Helsinki :cool2: (And hopefully will see Jaana quite soon, too!)

The summer camp announcement came yesterday and this year maybe mostly aimed at Spanish skaters (?) and Javi as the main coach with Valter Rizzo (and Italian coach whom he knows probably already from Morozov days).

And the LaLiga4Sports made him work for the money already in February by doing those little videos. There was that one for the Chinese New Year, one for El Clasico last week and now one for cheering Carolina Marin. And I have a feeling I've forgotten sth already ;-) He was probably still in Japan when El Clasico was on last Sunday - did he get up in the middle of the night to watch?

It seems already that the visit to Spain starting next week will feature quite a few public appaerances, so I hope in some interview he lets slip sth about the choices of music for the Olympic season...

Awwww, thanks eppen! I can absolutely say the same!

Great initiative for Top 3 Javi moments of the season! :agree: Mine are:

1. Malagueña in Helsinki - A complete no brainer. I still can't get my head around how utterly magnificent that skate was. I will be eternally grateful to fate and luck and whatever else had anything to do with it, that I got to see live as my favorite skater performed the best short program of his life. It really was one for the ages, something that will be spoken about, serve as inspiration for many skaters out there, and leave its mark on figure skating.

2. Danny Boy at WTT gala - I honestly have no idea how Javi and his team had the courage to choose THIS song to give him a lyrical program. I know, I know, it was because of Boston. But first of all, Javi had basically no experience with lyrical ballads before. Second, this is such a heartbreaking and deeply disturbing song, it would be a tremendous challenge for anyone to live up to it. Yet somehow it has been a wonderful program from Javi. But what he did last week was on another level for me. It moved me to tears and haunted me for days.

3. I'm going to cheat and include something which is not a Javi performance. ;) When I met Javi's sister and parents in Ostrava and had the chance to talk to them briefly to express how grateful I was for the tremendous sacrifices they made for Javi and all the support they have given him, so we get to enjoy the gift of this guy's incredible talents.

Eurosport Spain (I think) is doing a road to Korea type of documentary on Javi and were in Toronto to follow making of next season's programs. Yesterday the guy working on it posted this 50 seconds of... something... Does not necessarily look like a comp program, but it is done so half-heartedly that it is difficult to say (the approach to the jump he does not do in the end does not resemble any of his comp stuff, for example). See for yourself...

In part of it it looks like he's holding his hand up as if he's holding an umbrella or something...

Maybe it is from a new gala program? Anyway, I like the flow in his skating. Great that Spanish Eurosport is doing this documentary on Javi on his road to the Olympics! Thanks, Eppen!!!

Here are a couple of video clips of Javier receiving his gold medal - not the Olympic gold medal, but the "medalla de oro" from the city of Madrid:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zx9XEztJZsE

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FcP-5yExKbw

The audio in the first video is difficult to understand because there's so much background noise. Here's a translation of the second video:

Voice-over: Singer Alejandro Sanz and figure skater Javier Fernandez were the recipients of the Gold Medal from the community of Madrid. The regional president Cristina Cifuentes was in charge of presiding over the awarding of the medals and yesterday reminded us that the two were exemplary figures.
Cristina Cifuentes: "They have achieved success by making us dream, by making us grow or by leaving in all of us an indelible mark in the history of our education, our training in ourselves, both of them exemplary people."
Voice-over: The issue of corruption also came up in her speech.
Cifuentes: "Because decency, commitment, talent, and effort are the best antidote against the behaviors _______ (couldn't make it out) the law and against the difficulties of everyday life. Corruption is incompatible with democracy, and the time of the corrupt has come to an end in Madrid."
Voice-over: Alexander Sanz remembered that the greatest prize is being Madrileno.
Alexander Sanz: "Being from Madrid is the best medal you can have, the best gold medal is being from Madrid. From Madrid to heaven, but connected. Thank you very much."
Voice-over: Meanwhile Javier Fernandez assures us that he will always have Madrid in his heart.
Javier Fernandez: "I have a pride like no other for being here with you, for receiving this great medal. And in the coming years remaining of my athletic career, I want to have Madrid in heart and to win all the medals I can for my city. Thank you very much!"
Voice-over: The voice of Nina Pastori closed the ceremony with a homage to Alejandro Sanz, singing one of his songs.

The first video shows much more of Javier's acceptance speech than the second one. Unfortunately, there's just too much background noise, especially toward the beginning, that I can only get the gist of what he's saying, not enough for me to write out a complete translation. I'm not a native Spanish speaker, or anywhere near. If any native speakers want to give it a go, please do!

The word you couldn't make out is "vulneran" so it'll be something like "...behaviors that violate the law", at least that's what I think, I'm not really good at translating but yours is great!

I think this is the first time I hear Javi actually speaking Spanish, he is so cute <3

Here is Javi's full speech, without any background noise: https://twitter.com/InformativosTM/status/859351418490286080
Gracious and humble as always. :) It never ceases to amaze me how collected and eloquent Javi can be, delivering a speech without any notes, in front of a highly prestigious audience, at an event which is broadcast live.

Also, just to put this recognition into perspective, I read up on the names that have received this award before Javi: the list includes Mario Vargas Llosa, a Nobel prize winner in literature, Alfredo Di Stefano, one of the greatest football players of all time, Placido Domingo, the Spanish Olympic Committee, the Spanish national football team, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, the owner of El Corte Inglés, Museo de Prado, Iker Casillas, the former king of Spain, and the current king and queen of Spain.

How incredible is this? He's very likely also by far the youngest recipient ever. I'm so proud of Javi!!!
