Joshua Farris

Yes, I admit I went into a small flutter of panic too. Is Jason hurt? Is Max? Lukas? Or is he worried about Boyang? Or Ricky? Or Grant? Or Han? Or is this an obscure roundabout vent of frustration at the process of recovery from his own concussion?

Or is he just being emo Josh...? (Most likely.)

Dear gosh I hope it's not Jason. Nor anyone else.

Oh no, I really hope is not related to some recent injury by someone or something, that it's just a general thought.

If Josh is referring to himself in the third person as his own friend.....I just don't know. Jason and Max crossed my mind and likely would illicit that type of response, but honestly Mirai was the one that popped into my mind first. She is clearly fighting like mad to get the 3A down...i.e. trying to have more jumps, as Tara said if she did not have bad luck, she would have no luck at all.

I am not sure that Jason getting injured would illicit this comment as Jason is not really trying to have "the most jumps" if he were injured I think it would be more "adding jumps" or "learning jumps" not "the most jumps". Max would be more likely....maybe he decided to go back to trying the 4T or something. But even then, i almost think that if it was Max, or even any guy it might have said "the most jumps" rather than jumps...so i am wondering if the poor soul is female.

I mean, it probably is just Josh being mopey and philosophical...at least I hope so.

Unfortunately this sort of discussion always brings out the stupid, and there's already one "the quad should be banned" idiot in the replies...

Oh no, I hope not Angela :hopelessness:

Lol I saw that reply as well. People can get injured doing multiple triple combos! *sarcastically* "Should that be banned as well?

Exactly. As Josh himself knows well, the quad is not the only dangerous jump...

I've wiped myself out badly on singles before. Any time you try to introduce jumping and landing again on a frictionless surface, the risk increases exponentially.

I would not be against some limits (something like no repeated quads in the Free might lead to better balanced programs but still allow for advancement of the sport) but banning it is just too much and does not add anything. I don't even like the back flip being banned.

And I second very much your I hope not Angela comment. She has been doing so well, I could see her pushing herself too much as a result.

Anyway it is sad, and to be honest some of the hail Mary jumps are getting old - I really wish the push was more for landed with positive GOE jumps than just any of any quality.

Josh breaks his silence on twitter.

Calling it #figureskating is debatable. I'm tired of seeing my friends hurting themselves just to do the most jumps.

Seems he echos a sentiment many of us have... but also scares me a bit as to who he is referring to.

Ummmm ... I don't think Josh realized that his tweet would have the effect of a blind item raising questions as to who/what prompted the tweet.

Given that Josh himself and his team have been extremely circumspect as to what they have said about his own injuries, surely he did not intend to stir up conjecture about any of his friends -- even well-meaning conjecture.

So I hope that we can keep our fretting (I include my own) to a minimum, in the absence of any hard information.

Hope all is well with Josh's recovery and with the ladies and men mentioned above.

Good point. And he did say "hurt" not injured. So it could just be someone took a bad bruise or such. It could just be normal boo boos that come with skating that just reached a tipping point for him.

I am interpreting the tweet as a general statement of what he has seen (or is seeing if he is back on the ice) in training - not necessarily anything specific that has happened.

Being that Josh is typically so private about himself, I would assume if someone at the rink got hurt or injured recently, he would wait and let him/her and their team announce anything about it. I don't think he would even post a vague statement about a specific someone recently getting hurt.

I interpret the tweet as a general statement. I think he wants to say Figure Skating is not all about the jumps, statement which I agree with.

I think so too, now reading it again.

Typical Josh, no news about himself, but break the silence every now and again to post something cryptic

Josh is not exactly a gossip or even a frequent tweeter. Nor do any of his past tweets express general ruminations about the frequency and seriousness of other people's injuries.

Further, it's my impression that Josh hangs out mainly with people who train at the Broadmoor, just as Jason hangs out with 7K folks. The only time I recall Jason tweeting about a social occasion at home with anyone from Broadmoor is when he and Maddie Aaron got together to make/eat a Passover dish quite a while back. Most of these guys have so little free time!

My best guess is that two or more skaters from Broadmoor have suffered injuries of late (not unusual) and that he--especially given his own recent physical challenges--was brooding about how trying to master jumps or program difficulty beyond their competency might have contributed. Don't you think it's a little ghoulish to speculate about serious injuries to top American skaters?

While reheating leftovers and eating dinner, I thought about Josh's tweet and I still feel the same about what he is referring to. But what has me nervous for Josh is what if he ends up being able to skate at U.S. Nationals, he's in the top 3 after the SP, and a reporter asks him about this during the press conference? Add the concussion that has had him out this fall and I bet he will be asked about injuries in the sport. Josh has been nervous during press and teleconferences and I am curious about what his answer will be.

I could see it going down something like this

REPORTER: You tweeted during the grand prix that you felt that there was too much emphasis on jumps and that i was leading to too many injures, can you elaborate on that?

JOSH: Ummm what did i tweet?

leading to a big laugh and a tone that would not need a poignant and eloquent answer

While looking genuinely confused because his mind is not likely on his tweets at a competition.

EDIT ....and you called it. Doug Mattis just responded...twice.

Those w/amazing jumps still benefit because risk, & programs would have to be more interesting/entertaining.

https://twitter.com/DougMattis/status/662795829195878400

Less jumps as a rule, forcing creativity, choreo, & effective penalty 4risking 30% success-rate jump +meaningful.

I tend to agree with Doug Mattis in general, and I agree here. Although I really don't care if quads are banned or not, it wouldn't fix anything (and then all we'd hear is the, "but, sniff, it's a *sport*, we need lots of *jumps*, and only Latin I know is Citius, Altius, Fortius, and I'm going to run it into the ground" crowd.)

The day this sport is all Boyang Jin and no Josh Farris is the day I stop watching again.

But for Josh's tweet, really, he has no one but himself to blame. If you tweet once every 6 weeks, and are cryptic for half of those tweets, speculation will ensue. It just shows that we want ( cue the voice of the show "The Prisoner") in-for-Ma-ti on.

I doubt the latter will ever happen. You only have to look at the fight Max has to put up to be competitive, the lower PCS for Boyang (who really wasn't all that bad)...the snobby "artist" pushers are the ones who are ruling the roost at the moment. Look at Skate America and Skate Canada - the scoring was worse and more ridiculous at Skate Canada, but that was acceptable because Hanyu and Chan are "artists", but Max's victory at Skate America is completely unacceptable and a scandal to these people even though he was almost spotless and technically extremely difficult.

For me, this is a sport. It will always be a sport. Technical advancement is required and should be encouraged - but as safely as possible. I worry about Boyang Jin because of his heavy landings and slight frame. There will always be some element of risk, and that is something that figure skaters accept the moment they set blade to ice. You can hurt yourself in fifty million ways in this sport - I've done a lot of them myself - and hurting yourself off a jump is only a small part of that.

I must have been watching different pressers than you have.
Josh is soft-spoken and thoughtful ... but I have not found him to be so nervous that he cannot give effective responses.

The tweet seems to address an issue that has been on his mind, so I do not anticipate that Josh would have trouble answering a question about the issue in a presser.
