Kamila Valieva: Anti-doping Case and Follow-ups

Who are "they"? It's not like these scenarios have been claimed by Kamila or her representatives. How many "leaks" and gossips we get to hear before the official version is substantiated is hard to predict. And all of them will be seen as Kamila herself changing her story?

Jesus why are people so uncritical...
Are we gonna pretend we don't understand who they is? Her team: coaches, doctors. Her handlers, parents. Them.
Now you're gonna ask who "we" is as well? :)
Or did the press just made up the grandfather story? Wasn't it her mother? And the coaches had to agree with her testifying that.

She is being manipulated, for sure. But Kamila is not 7. She is 15. Most 15 year olds are not shy about expressing their views to their mother. At some level, she must be going along with this story, which strains credulity.
I just think it’s highly likely she’s been put under tremendous pressure to sell a particular story. Maybe her family too. Though I doubt we’ll ever know for sure what’s gone on.

I don’t find it particularly credible either.

I remember from the last Olympics, the thread for Women’s figure skating had thousands of posts from fans commenting on the ladies and their programs. The last I checked it was 67 posts on the Short program from this Olympics. In my opinion this Russian doping scandal has ruined figure skating forever. Listening to the news from fans, other athletes and commentators, everyone agreed that the Russian skater that was caught doping, should have not skated. No one wanted a doper ruining this Olympics for all the other clean athletes. In my opinion, the cronies were as smug in the Kiss and Cry as if life is beautiful and just like it was like any ordinary day. The Russians had their warning at the last Olympics and now the athletes are there as the ROC. You would think that they would have learned their lesson on doping from 2018 but they think they are above rules.

I have a solution. There should be 4 medals. If Valieva wins, she gets Gold and the 2nd place gets Gold as well. 3rd gets silver and 4th Bronze. If she places 2nd she gets Silver and the 3rd gets Silver as well and so on.
If they strip her medal everything is fine and if they don't - not a real problem either. They could have a medal ceremony and everything. Same goes for the Team Event.
Olympics without medal ceremonies are simply not acceptable!

Not sure having two girls from the same coach on the top of the podium would be something that may appease the people who are angry with Valieva skating... Most people are sympathetic to her but not to her environment... so having her, and Anna or Sasha on top of the podium, may trigger even more problems...

Olympics where a skater caught doping is allowed to skate anyway is unacceptable. Part of the fallout from that is the elimination of the medal ceremon(ies) which hurts lots of skaters who didn't dope as well as the doper. Remember it's not just the women's event which is affected---it's the team event as well.

There can't be a medal ceremony because no final decision has been reached as yet about punishment for the doping. It could be that Valieva will not be allowed to receive medals for both women and team event. And it still could be theoretically possible that she will receive as little as a reprimand, so all those duplicate medals would be irrelevant. And doubling up on medals sure can't work for the team event because there are multiple medalwinners on each of the top teams.

The IOC certainly would not agree with massive double medaling anyway. That action in 2002 was done for one pair team in one event because of all the adverse publicity about possible judge manipulation.

Just FYI, "junior" in this study refers to 19-22 years old.

1.2.1 Junior elite endurance athletes

In the present project, the word "junior" refers to individuals between the age of 19 and 22 years old which is the international age group for junior athletes in a studied sport.
Yes, and the article is seemingly more applicable to endurance athletes, but it's the closest academic research I can find on this particular topic of Russian attitudes to these matters. I admit I cannot read Russian, though, which certainly limits my possibilities.

While there are obviously differences between 15-year-olds and 19-year-olds, it's worth noting some keys to this:

(1) How the high incidence of supplementation matches other studies conducted with younger athletes (such as Diehl and others' 2012 study of German elite adolescent athletes between 14 and 18 years old).

(2) Since it's a comparison between Russian and Norwegian athletes, how focused the Russians in particular are on supplementation and medication for performance enhancement. Are we to believe that these societal attitudes simply emerge ex nihilo when they turn 19?

Regardless, for more clarity, I'll edit my original post to include this definition of junior.

The thing is in a court of law or police investigation, a witness is a witness no matter the relationship to the accused. The prosecutors in a criminal case can't discount a witness just because he/she is related to the accused.

Kamila's excuse is really the new "the dog ate my homework" excuse.
The bigger the lie, the more they believe. Dogs don't eat only slippers, they can also eat homework.

I remember Kamila's interview after she won the Euros ( I was going to link it but could not find it anymore on the youtube) and her innocent sweet face and the sweet way she said - I am only fifteen... so sweet so innocent...(I can't even remember the question she was answering)
Nobody knew then how this particular phrase will haunt as right now I feel that I shall scream if I hear ''she is only 15'' one more time!
I must say I can not remember a time when a figure skater was everywhere, I was eating breakfast this morning and a guy on the morning show on Lyric FM talked about Kamila... in Ireland, guys, in Ireland!!! The rugby land where if you ask anyone on the street if they know anything about FS, they would look at you like you an alien from another planet... I guess the bad publicity is still good publicity?
Now about sweetness of Kamila (and other Eteri's girls) that has been projected on us quite a lot- I am sceptical about that tbh. In Russia sweetness would not get you to the top, such fierce competition in ladies FS is there. You might think Kamila is unique and so on but there are probably a dozen of other Kamilas who are equally talented but simply didn't make it for variety of reasons - parents had no money, injuries and so on. Kamila also was lucky to be born when she was born that is a big plus for Eteri (Alina & Yulia before her) These girls could look very sweet where in reality they are probably hard as nails and can swear like a sailor. They have to be.
So frankly, I am not buying that she did not know what she was doing etc, being 15 yo in the elite sport is different from ordinary 15y that the main responsibility is still with the adults around her. She might or might have not known but due to her age she is not able to grasp all the consequences and significance of what's happening. That's a real problem.

So now because of NYT they're all spinning L-Carnitine as heart medication. We don't know why she took L-Carnitine when it's a common supplement but they want to make it sound like a cocktail of heart drugs, shoddy journalism knew it. Not to mention the only source is somebody against Kamila that is leaking against WADA rules against a minor.

It's not difficult to argue that US media in particular is trying to brief against her. Johnny/Tara desperately trying to wash their hands clean perpetuated it.
What you are forgetting is that TMZ was found in her system plus a cocktail of body enhancing medications. This means that she doped herself, grandpa doped her or her cronies doped her. There is Zero tolerance of doping at the Olympics. That’s why Johnny, Tara and every Tom, Dick and Harry in the figure skaing world are upset over, she shouldn’t have been allowed to skate. The clean hardworking athletes didn’t want her in the ice. Shame, Shame, Shame…put the blame on the BYT because they told the truth. Sometimes the truth hurts..

Of course I don't know, but as a sports journalist wrote in a French newspaper: "She is only 15. She looks much older on the ice and much younger off the ice." That's not very nice, but that's what a lot of people feel about her, I suppose.

as Kamila's fan, i feel the same as how Tara and Johnny have expressed- betrayal and disappointment. That this girl, or even possibly these girls, are not honest competitors. How they are shown to the world is not a true image, past results and who we thought they were as athletes is now tainted. Their coaching team and the Crystal school are tainted. It's not what we all thought it was.

Johnny himself went to profile these girls in Russia before the Olympics, and he basically feels deceived. he can't be the same fan or even support her as he used to. i feel the same way, and there is a feeling of grief that comes with it.

Yes technically a family member can be a witness but their credibility is questionable if they are giving testimony for their relative.

But at least one other skater would be on the podium as well. I know that it would not be ideal, but this situation needs a solution asap. We've seen two Gold medals after a scandal in figure skating before.
And even if Valieva bombs the FS ... one of TT is going to win this.
I just don't want the other skaters to be the victims of this mess.

6) A little bit off topic: yesterday I watched the ladies sp. Of course KV's sp was less good, so I watched her team event sp once again. What a masterpiece. I must say that during 2 minutes and 50 seconds, whether she is doped or not was just irrelevant. It's awful, isn't it?
Exactly my feeling.
Doping? Someone was sacrificed to the evil gods? Whatever, it does not matter...
Her skate matters.
