Kawaguchi/Smirnov LP"Love Story" 2007

They did have a different interpretation--S/P had a more literal interpretation, while theirs was more of a love program. However, I found their presentation to be pedestrian...

That beautiful music very much brings into my mind the movie, not a skating performance by S/P. One can clearly see in Kawaguchi/Smirnov´s performance that it is very early in the season, and I´m sure that later in the season I will be spellbound as I have faith in them and their coach. They are still such a new pair, that it takes a while for them to develop as a team. Anyway, I´m sure that I will prefer their performance - even a faulted one - to anything that I see from the Savchenko & Szokowy (they are too robotic to my taste).

I think it's typical for Moskvina to choreograph programs that are almost a little bit more difficult than her skaters feel comfortable with. The hope being that if the skaters are hardworking enough (as she demands), than they master it by the end of the season and peak at the right time. I do agree, though, that as of now they do not seem to relate to each other much at all.

As to the music - to me, the only piece of music that is hard to see anyone else skating to is Bolero; and even that has been disproved by Chait & Sakhnovsky. I do, though, find it nicely ironic that Moskvina is the one using the music when it was her team most at rivalry with S&P when they were doing their Love Story.

they are working on the entrance into the twist to make higher difficulty and 3 twist is all they can hope right now.

The entry into the 3Twist now is already gorgeous, with the turning mini lifts in one direction, only to change direction into a huge 3Twist. It would be a shame if they abandoned this because it didn't get high enough difficulty scores.

This program has technical difficulties, no doubt about it..
Even with that: the main result of it, I could realize how well this music was interpreted by Sale-Pelletier.
When they finished the program in 2002, my eyes was in tears.
I felt myself totally outside of the whole thing watching K-S in this program...
Tears won't ever come, I'm affraid....

K&S look so slow, but surely that will improve over the season. However, Smirnov is so handsome he could just STAND on the ice and I'd watch him.

Not to hijack the thread, but since we're talking about Nebelhorn- here are two things I found interesting.
Sebestyan- TENTH in SP. 4th in LP. 5th in final.
Varner- 1st in SP. NINTH in LP. 3rd in final.

Big shout-outs to Megan WIlliams-Stewart, Shaun Rogers, Evora and Ladwig and Wester and Barantsev on winning medals for the US!

Actually, this is the new SP they prepared for this season but abondened it in favor of last year's upgraded version.

Well, that's too bad. I really like this program better. Kawaguchi looks like a little kid, the light hearted music suits her style better.

It feels so strange to have pairs chosing Love Story when it was THE music used by Jamie and David for the Olympics... not a regular year, but an Olympic one... ah well, as long as these pairs can produce something strong, I'll be happy, but I can't really picture any performance as memorable as Jamie and David's.

Kypma

actually, S&P used this for at least one "regular" year, not just the Olympic year. It was nice the first time around, then it was like "we have seen it before".

It is still early in a season, I am sure the program will improve.

I agree with Ptichka that only the Bolero has the "untouchable" status, and I would maybe also add Winter by Bond.

Love story is such a sappy movie, if I never hear it again, I would be almost as happy if nobody skated to Carmen or Swan Lake for a season :)

Sale/Pelletier were planning to use "Orchid" for their Olympic program, but when they reprised "Love Story" for GPF -- back when they had to do two LP's for GPF -- they had such a success with it, that after "Orchid" was a fiasco at Canadian Nationals in 2002, they decided to use "Love Story" (after they decided not to quit altogether).

Are this young couple going to be at SkateCanada in November? It would be a bit of a charge to see/hear Jamie and David as commentators on this program - new baby in tow in Quebec City and all.................!!!

I watched it on YouTube and found the music to be sappy. First of all, it's the "1001 strings" version, which always puts me off ANY piece of music, even one I like. Secondly, much of the particular Love Story they are using is the familiar melody that everybody can hum when they think of Love Story - that section of the musical score that is so familiar and sappy that it makes people gag. What really saved Jamie and David's version (other than the obvious connection between them, their uncanny resemblance to the 2 famous movie actors in the film version, and the fact that it marked their successful first-place debut at SkateAmerica in 1999,) is the fact that a lot of their music was from the lesser known parts of the Love Story movie score which was actually quite nice, and the fact that it was largely piano music if I remember correctly. (maybe I'll rewatch their 2002 performance again on Youtube)

I find some of these comments rather harsh. The season has not even started yet. Skaters are just starting to skate their new programs. I don't expect to see a polished program at this time of the year. The goal for any skater has to be to peak close to world championships. K&S is almost a brand new pair, with barely one season behind them. I would give them time to develop, and I don't see why they cannot use any music that appeals to them.

Speaking of music/signature pieces, I believe all skaters have equal rights to all the music that is out there. Comparisons are unavoidable for certain pieces of music, but I would not try to downgrade a pair or a skater for trying to do their own interpretation of a famous piece of music- Love Story included. 'Bolero' will be always attached to Torville & Dean. 'Moonlight Sonata' will be always associated with G&G. It does not mean another pair- at any level- should not skate to it.

As far as S&P's Love Story is concerned, when I first saw it in 1999, I thought it was a very pleasant program and it was well skated. However, it got old for me pretty quickly. By the 2002 Olympics I was bored with it and it did not seem that great anymore. Still, it's a matter of opinion/taste.

I liked the approach K&S seem to take in this video. Their focus seems to be more on interpreting the music (and this should get better, with time and multiple performances in competitions) than on enacting a well known story. I am interested in where this pair will be two years from now. I think they will need that much time to develop. In the meantime I am open to whatever music they skate to. It's all a part of learning.

Vash makes a good point in allowing performers to do what they will with music.

With music originating in a movie, play, opera or ballet a skater or team can literally use the story (at least the essence of the story) as a part of its program, or opt to follow to where the music takes them without storyline.

The literal performances seem to dominate the figure skating scene in competitive skating.

Few skaters or teams choose to do their own original version of the music without a story line.

I applaud Kawaguch/Smirnov for taking the latter option and look forward to see them in competitions.

I don't expect ANYONE to look good in September, so it's rather hard for me to assess the kind of impact this program might have. I was personally underwhelmed, but that was in part due to the errors and due to the less than intimate camera angle.

It also stands to reason that Moskvina & Co. would have more of an "abstract", if you will, interpretation of the music in mind than most North American pairs would. This is, after all, a country that slapped a hideous cow print on Ilya Kulik for "Rhapsody in Blue." And Jamie & David did a magical job with it, but I don't have a problem with another take on the piece. It's just WAY too early in the season to figure out what this program is actually supposed to look like.

I do think that this is a pair with a lot of potential and I wouldn't be surprised if they ended up contending for the podium in Vancouver -- bear in mind, Bereznaja and Sikharulidze were pretty rough around the edges at first, too. Never underestimate the power of Tamara Moskvina...

As for Smirnov, well --- he's just hot hot hot!!
