Kazuki Tomono

It's the day after, and I still can't stop thinking about Kazuki's skate and smiling like a fool 😆

Just wanted to share a couple of fan cams:

What really stands out for me is how his skating has become smooth and soft. Landing big jumps and great and all, but I'm also so so proud of the effort he's put into his skating skills over the past few years 😍

I can't wait to see Kazuki's SP and the entire men's event. I couldn't see a single boy yesterday, and then when I had time in the evening, there were pairs live which I also wanted to see x_x
I don't get why a clean Kazuki is behind Kagiyama who made an axel mistake per his words in GS twitter train, but then, I haven't seen the protocols or the programs, and after Nationals SP scoring, I am not surprised anyway.
Anyways, I hope Kazuki secures a medal in the free tomorrow  That would be a fitting reward for his efforts and steady improvement this season. He's on a roll. And he's such an inspiration for all the other underdogs, not just in Japan. ^ ^

So glad I was there to see it! He was stunning! Love the part where the music gets a little more dramatic and he really sells it. This crowd seems to like to clap, I have a feeling we'll all be clapping along raucously during La La Land!!! Best of luck to him tomorrow.

OMG you were there! So jealous! Thank you for the report, and yes, let's hope the crowd enjoys La La Land tomorrow!

I went to see Mens practice only the final 2 groups. Most men including Kazuki looked good and focused (unlike ladies this time). Once again I found Kazuki’s run-through captivating even without jumps.
Hope we’ll have another fabulous competition and of course good luck Kazuki!!

Thank you for sharing this! Hope you have a wonderful time watching the Men's free.

I couldn't watch the boys... again. =_= But, kudos to Kazuki for putting up a fight! Super close to 270 is a very good score indeed. 💪 He ended up one spot lower than in 2018, but it is still a solid placement. Most boys from all over the world never make it that far. And Kazuki still has his small bronze medal, like in 2018. :)
I hope to see Kazuki in the gala!

Kazuki probably paid the price for participating in two competitions one after another, I hope he’s not disappointed, he has achieved a remarkable feat and he must be proud of himself! I am proud of him!

What an extraordinary season has been!!! Now, I think it’s safe to say that he is one of the greatest competitors of his generation!

I look forward to cheering him on again next year!

I believe in this case was more psychological rather than physical - it's just his second time competing at worlds, and the first being that close to the top and with a realistic change to medal, plus the pressure to deliver a Japanese podium sweep (thanks, journalist that brought that up in the SP press conference 😑).

This was effectively the same issue he had earlier in the season at Rostelecom and 4CC: the skill is there, but he still lacks competitive experience as a top skater. It's easy to forget that, growing up, he never thought he would be competing internationally, let alone winning medals. In addition to that, the depth of the Japanese Men field means he didn't get as many opportunities to be sent to big events. Still, it's crazy to think that four years ago he skated two clean programmes and was 5th, which he himself described as a 'miracle'. Now, he was 6th (realistically should be 5th) even with a messy free, and if he had been clean he would have medalled. His progress has been astonishing!

Hiraike-sensei said before that Kazuki is a 'step by step kid', and we can really see it this season. As a friend of mine pointed out, he achieved something in every event he competed:
- GP Italy: Landed 3 quads in the free for the first time
- Rostelecom: Broke 90pts in the SP, leading after the SP for the first time
- Japanese Nationals: Delivered a great free skate and finished top 5
- 4CC: Won his first international silver medal
- Coupe du Printemps: Won his first international gold medal
- Worlds: Joined the 100+ SP club, only the 10th man to do so in the current scoring system.
- Overall, excluding smaller events such as Japan Open, Japanese Regionals and Coupe du Printemps, he had an average score of 262.26 - incredible consistency!

The best thing is that, he seems motivated to continue and do even better 🙌

Also, he's been invited to the gala! So we'll be seeing Bills one more time 👔💼

He's in good company though - Riku/Ryuichi and Kana/Daisuke didn't manage to deliver perfect programs either, especially RikuRyu sort of folded when the medal opportunity presented itself. I think it's not easy to be a World/OG medal favorite...

There's a really good point, I hope JSF consider this

He was so close.. But I find comfort in many points:

- His ChSq was so so energetic and full of joy.
- His beautiful Cinema Paradiso was filmed officially and by fans. Thank god his best performance was not at CdP…
- He joined the honorable 100+ SP club with 9.0 in skating skills, while the his PCR was still held back. In FS despite multiple errors and a fall, his Free PCS was close 4th only after the medalists!
- He got his second small medal at his second Worlds. This is even more impressive considering that each time he was a second alternate called at a short notice and immediately after another competition.
- Hopefully these achievements has put him on the map and will work favorably in the future. I’m still pissed off at Rostelecom judges who robbed him of the gold as well as the CdP’s!
- I feared that Kazuki might be missed out on the gala this time to balance nationalities. Yes, Beijing Olympics also invited 3 Japanese male skaters to the gala, but it was Yuzu along with the medalists! The organizer (ISU or French Fed?) must really appreciate Kazuki’s appeal.
- I was pleasantly surprised at his popularity among the audience at venue, despite his limited appearance at the ISU championships. He must have acquired lots of new fans globally, even more after the gala!

Thank you @kwanette and @Gaz1 for your thoughts and reports! It's always nice to know that people enjoyed seeing Kazuki skate 🤗

I was also pleasantly surprised to see he was invited to the gala. It reminded me of what Tatsuki Machida said about 'Kazuki Tomono is now a brand' in Japanese ice shows, and I guess it's becoming this way in international galas as well!

I had a look at the latest ISU Men standings and Season's Best. Kazuki is now the 13th in World standings, and despite have increased his PB a bit, slipped from 14th to 16th, but that's still a really strong position. The best thing is that, as 6th in the world, he is now a seeded skater for the 2022/23 GP season, with two guaranteed spots

I must first apologize to you all. I believe I may have unintentionally distracted Kazuki while he was performing at Worlds yesterday. When he was landing a jump near the kiss and cry, he somehow made eye contact with me and then the jump landing got very messy.... I was surprised that happened, since skaters normally don't make eye contact while performing. Then again, there haven't been many times where I have obtained tickets that were that close to the ice. I don't quite know what caused the initial eye contact; I hope it wasn't my bunny hat that distracted him. Was I perhaps looking at him too intensely? I have no idea. In any case, I am terribly sorry that it happened. 😟

I also kept confusing him with Shoma for some reason; they both look so small from a distance. 😅

At least Kazuki will be performing Bills today! I can't wait to see that!!! I also can't wait to see just how loudly the loving, supportive French crowd claps along with it!!!

Lol @yuumagical obviously I wasn't there so I can't say for sure, but I don't believe it was your fault! You were there to support him, you did nothing wrong.

As I said I think Kazuki was feeling the pressure, he made a miscalculation in the first combo going for the -3T instead of the safer -2T and that threw him off the game, it wouldn't be the first time that he lost concentration because of a mistake, believe me! This happens, he's a very emotional/sensitive guy and he said himself his biggest challenge is to keep his head cool and focused in competitions. So please don't blame yourself ☺️

Meanwhile...
