Kazuki Tomono

Thank you so much, @Gaz1 ! That was a really interesting read, the part about the 'Super Sub, go!' made me smile so much, but ultimately I'm in awe about what Kazuki did, because surely it wasn't easy. It was amazing he managed to flip the switch in such a short time.

I had a listen to what TSL had to say about him (because I know they're fellow Kazuki fans), and they said that coming straight up from Coupe du Printemps might have helped him in the short programme, but things caught up with him in the free programme. I agree with this assessment!

Meanwhile, it was announced yesterday Kazuki, together with Sota and Sena, will participate in an event later this month (23 April). I will confess I didn't understand very well what the event was about lol seems there will be a fashion and photography show, too?

Kazuki looks so handsome in this picture 😳

It seems most skaters did former competitive programmes, I guess there wasn't enough time to prepare a new EX after all...

Kazuki does look very handsome yes. I must say he along with the other Japanese skaters know how to dress when they wear suits. Not saying other skaters don’t know how to dress but the suits are a very proper and good look. Suits speak “I mean business.” It’s part of Japanese culture to dress that way from what I’ve learned and it’s really great. His glasses are a nice touch too.

Happy Friday, everyone!

My friend messaged me about NowVoice yesterday but I just listened to Kazuki a couple of times to share with you, again in very rough translation.

- Change of plan, Kazuki is going to talk about the Worlds today instead of answering questions:clap:

- Just before the Worlds he won the Coup de Printemp cup. His performance was not great (actually almost worrying ahead of the Worlds) but he was really happy at his first ever win abroad regardless of the size of the event.

- At the Worlds, he achieved all he had practiced and all he wanted to deliver in SP, though there were still various points he could have improved to compete better with top skaters (such as axis of 4S, overturned 4T, L3 StSq, skating, spins).
FS didn't go well with most jumps failing. It was due to insufficient preparation and practice towards the Worlds, but he admits that he was not good enough after all. He learnt what he lacks from the experience though. It was invaluable that he was able to skate 4th in the final group at the Worlds, such a big step for him. He has been on a podium this season, but felt that a skater's attitude/ resolution makes a difference in the end, more so than technical skills. He aims to continue improving further with such attitude and go to the Worlds again, not as an alternate this time.

- He received a "Super-sub, go!!" call at Frankfurt airport when talking and laughing with all (other Japanese stakers I think). They explained the situation on the phone and asked if he would participate in the Worlds, to which he said yes. They asked him to keep it to himself until the formal announcement. However it must have been quite obvious to others, as he had been on a call crouching in the corner clearly in shock and returned quietly. It was probably the most shocking among his substitute calls in the past. He felt as if he was grabbed by his ankle and thrown back into the season and struggled to switch his mind that day. First he called Kao offering his sympathy. Kao confirmed his withdrawal and wished Kazuki good luck. He then realised that he really was going to the Worlds and was resolved. He was able to concentrate from the first practice the following day, thanks to his past experience.
He then recalled his sub history: Junior Worlds (the hardest as he was asked on the day of departure), NHK GP, 2018 Worlds, 4CC, then 2022 Worlds. He has never made an error in SP when he skated as alternate!

- He didn't have extra clothes for changing but found a coin washing machine later in Luxembourg. He didn't have his costumes for the gala either. The previous night, Fuji TV staff got him all the costumes at Uniqlo (I too saw the Uniqlo branch in Montpellier without knowing): shirt and trousers, a red tie and glasses. He bound the glasses with hair rubber so they won't drop in jumps. It was Daisuke's idea to use a red carry case instead of a briefcase, which turned out to be a success with colour matching with his tie despite no prior practice. He is truly thankful to everyone for their support to get through the Worlds and it made the experience even more memorable.

- Kazuki had a jumping competition together with Shoma and Yuma at ice shows in Japan (Prince Ice World) at the start of the season. The experience helped him improve quality of his quad jumps and made such a difference this season. He looks forward to another PIW appearance (though he has not been invited yet?) as he loves both giving and watching the performances.
It was so cool competing alongside with Shoma and Yuma at the Worlds. He was intensely watching them at the victory ceremony and wants to catch up with the two(y)

The label is saunaboy サウナボーイ;)
Thank you so much for the translation..

Soooooo it seems like Kazuki has been performing his Daft Punk EX at SOI 🤖😍
I absolutely love this EX and I would love see it performed with Kazuki's current skating skills. The SOI Osaka spectators are so lucky!
Meanwhile, some gorgeous pics from his CinePara performance:

There's also a new NowVoice by Kazuki, with Keiji and Shoma! https://twitter.com/naniwatomono/status/1510497839444504585
I would love to read a full translation, so far I've only seen Shoma-focused bits.
ETA: Here's a summary!

The three of them look super cute together, they seem to be having loads of fun!

I'm glad Kazuki brought back Daft Punk. I love it too. I have heard it recently, at WC I think, and I immediately thought of Kazuki's iconic gala. He owns the piece, and I hope he skates to a similar song as competition program. It could be a huge fan favorite.

Here we go - Kazuki-focused translation of the joint NowVoice of Kazuki, Shoma and Keiji!

They started about their programmes at the Stars on Ice show:
Kazuki: New Cinema Paradise & Daft Punk. He felt it's about time to do DP after 3 seasons, after Bills and La La Land the previous year. DP has been a great favourite of Shoma and his family from the start. His silver costume has faded yellowish noticably to fellow skaters but his word "Costume deteriorated, performance developed".
Keiji: Spring in Buenos Aires & Whiplash. The former is from 5-6 years ago, making some fans wonder if it is new. Keiji reviewed his own performance on YouTube to recall details. He finds Whiplash a wrong choice, such a tough FS programme. Shoma and Kazuki confirmed that he returned utterly exhausted.
Shoma: Great Spirit & Oboe Concerto. Shoma has been skating the Oboe programme (Kazuki loves it!) since the year before and finds it so comfortable that he could dedicate majority of his practice time to Bolero this season. Everyone praises his SP costumes, especially the blue one with 'sabuibo' (goosebumps). He has worn it back back/front earlier at ice shows until Keiji adviced him to wear it with 'sabuibo' on the left.

They agreed that reviving an old programme is not easy, as skaters don't want to perform a programme which they have spent an entire season to develop with inferior technique/ quality. Kazuki however pointed out that they could also show their development in old programmes. He practices steps using his previous programmes and sometimes gets impressed with the technical difficulty the old self managed. Actually he had thought about reviving the legendary Maharaja programme before the Worlds but soon realised that he would need more time for that. Keiji thinks they as competing skaters should dedicate time in learning new programmes rather than old ones.

Group numbers are also challenging, as they need to skate & dance to others' speed and learn new music. Kazuki does a group number (Keiji and Shoma are known slow learners and had been assigned only to the final shows in Hachinohe, which were eventually cancelled after the earthquake). After the group number rehearsal, Kazuki accidentally let out that he was tired near Koshiro, who had been practicing long hours that day:laugh:. Apparently Koshiro, Mai and Satoko are heavily utilised and everywhere in the show.

The three men are recording this while waiting for the the show to start. They usually do not get too nervous but chat to relax the atmosphere when waiting for their turn at the shows/ competitions. After Kazuki's SP at the Worlds, Shoma ran to him and congratulated him on the 101 scores before his own performance:love2:. That's when Kazuki knew that Shoma would be fine. Shoma was relaxed indeed - he spot his coach and his trainer during his SP and wondered what they would say if his 4F failed after his perfect practice. Kazuki has a routine - he exhales and empties his mind before he starts. It worked in SP but in FS he became conscious that he was skating at the Worlds. His first 4T was too good for combination - funny enough he finds it easier to add a second jump after stiffer landing. He shouldn't have made it a combination jump. That mistake was difficult for him to process and followed by the fall in 4S... He joked that the "I will do it!" mind would be the end of him.

He was aware of the audience's reaction and said that they gave him a wondrous applause to his accel and salchoe jumps as if they were a 4Lz:LOL:. The skaters missed and appreciated cheering at the competitions (which is not allowed yet in Japan I believe) and discussed the COVID policies & controls abroad. Among many COVID testing they have experienced, those at the SkAm and the Worlds (in the beginning) were so painful, especially for Kazuki whose nose was blocked from hay fever, while it was easy almost like cleaning nose at Rostelecom.

Thank you so much!

OMG @Gaz1 Thank you so much! :love2: That was such an interesting read, for so many reasons.
First of all, Kazuki made me laugh with the 'deteriorated costume, increased performance' 😂 Also, he thought of reviving his old Maharajah programme? Is this real life? I'd love that!
He also confirmed what I thought when I saw his free at worlds: that combo mistake in the first 4T really threw him off. But it's super nice to know that he felt so welcomed and encouraged by the crowd!

Kazuki seems to be having so much fun at SOI! Here's a group pic:

A couple of nice SOI pics from Sponichi 🤖💙

Today there was an article about Kazuki published on asahi Digital, sadly behind a paywall, but just sharing here in case anyone has access: https://www.asahi.com/articles/ASQ4572GNQ45UTQP01N.html

Seems that in-person tickets for the event with Kazuki, Sota and Sena are already sold out
But there will be some sort of streaming:

haha! No wonder, if it's true that there are photo ops for fans :) I've heard that very few events in Japan allow fans to meet skaters in person, so they likely pounced upon this rare chance. :) Lucky fans ☺️

Really I didn’t know that about Japan skating events. There was an event Shoma did a few years ago for the jewelry he wears I think and fans were able to go up to him, say something to him and he would take their hand in both of his and respond to them.

Some events allow this, I think Stars On Ice is one which allows Meet and Greet segments, but the few Japanese fans that I know have told me that it's actually easier to approach skaters at events abroad, especially at smaller competitions like Challengers and B events.
