Kazuki Tomono

Kazuki's interview after the Gensan SP:

He succeeded in a 4T-3T at the beginning, but fell on the following 4S, scoring 82.43 points, "To be honest, I had not prepared well for the competition, so I think it showed. My spins, jumps, and overall flow of my performance were poor, but I will try to see how much I can do in my current state, in FS as well."

During the off season, he has been taking skating lessons at the "Cricket Club" in Toronto, Canada, and performing in many ice shows, and has been spending fulfilling days. As for skating skills and spins, he has a long-term perspective, saying, "I hope I can grow over the years." He is now in the stage of gradually getting into competition mode for autumn, when the Grand Prix series and other competitions are coming up.

The FS will be held on the 13th. He will compete for top places with the leader Sota Yamamoto and Kao Miura, etc.

Oh man, Kazuki's in serious danger of not winning the 🍖 this year, he has to bridge a 13pt different from Sota who's clearly more prepared for this competition than him 😥 He skates tomorrow at 7:20pm local time, hope he does well and at least snatches the silver!

If you want to see Kazuki's program, the ever-kind Tsuyo has posted all 4 leading program videos in the Japanese national competitions thread. I was able to view it yesterday! I have to say Kazuki skated really nicely, shame about the fall and the spins, but the rest was it was super likeable. And you know me, I was ready to start defending Sota getting higher skating skills marks than Kazuki, but this time, I think Kazuki and Sota were fairly comparable, and I could see that Kazuki has made a big step forward, ss-wise. His gliding was very smooth and so were his turns.

Also, never say never when the FS is still lurking out there. Sota does have a tendency of making mistakes in the FS and blowing his SP lead, although he's otherwise prepared. I'd love for him to win for a change as it will mean a lot to him, but even if he doesn't, then I'll be happy as long as both him and Kazuki skate clean-ish.

Thank you so much..I just watched Kazuki..Good thoughts for him for the free skate!

The battle isn't over yet.

Can you give the link to the thread? I tried to find it but I am having trouble. I would like to see Kazuki's performance.

Thank you so much, @surimi for the link!
You're right, it wasn't a bad outing for Kazuki at all! This programme is sooooooo good and actually quite challenging, I can see for example, doing a spin straight after the 3A is not easy!

Yes, you can see the TCC touch in his skating skills :love2: I remember in the nonno article he said they gave him a list of exercises for him to do alone, and you can tell he's been doing them!

Interview with Kazuki after FS at Gensan:

Kazuki Tomono (Uenoshiba Skate Club), who finished 2nd in the SP, was also 2nd in the FS with 136.05 points, for a total of 218.48. He made some mistakes in his jumps, including two (quad) toeloops that were both popped into double. Here is what Tomono had to say after his performance

"Now all I have to do is practice."

As was the case with SP, I was completely out of practice, and it showed in my performance. I had not been able to practice for the competitions, so I hope I can turn my disappointment of this competition into the better performance in the next competitions.

(On Toeloop) I had changed my boots in the last one month, and I didn't feel things were working out well. Finally, in SP, I could get my toeloop back. I had good toeloops in practice, too. I hope to make use of what I have gained here in practice from tomorrow onwards.

(What do you want to express in FS?) I want to show my character even in classical music, to perfect my skating. (Next competition) It hasn't been decided yet. CS (Challenger Series) or GP (Grand Prix) Series. For now, I think all I can do is practice.

Thank you for the translation, @rRainbow !
Here's Kazuki's FS (with big thanks to Tsuyo).
My thoughts - there were jump mistakes and missed levels on one spin and the StSeq, but overall the program looks very cohesive, and once Kazuki skates clean and is on beat, he'll get a great score for it. It has loads of potential, and even this less than perfect version had the audience clapping along, and enjoying the program. Kazuki has a very strong set of prgrams this year, and what's just as important, they play to his strengths. Both the jazz and the Fledermaus are just the type of music that Kazuki can express naturally and intuitively. The Viennese waltz rhythm is tricky but he'll get there.
Congrats to Kazuki on the silver, and good luck onwards!

Another interview:
Kazuki Tomono reveals his current search for sponsors: "The most important thing is to produce results so that I can get sponsors.

Looking back on his preparation for this competition, he said, "I had not been able to practice for the competition yet. I would like to channel my frustration from this competition into more practice," he said calmly and enthusiastically.

This season, he belongs to the "Uenoshiba Skating Club. As for sponsors, he revealed, "I am looking for one." Until now, he has been unable to find time to do so because of ice shows, etc. "From now on, I'll be looking for sponsors, too. Sponsors are not always easy to find because they have to pay me money, so it is not easy to find a sponsor right away. I think the number one thing I have to do is to produce results so that I can find a good company. I hope that by producing results, I can make companies think that I am a good skater, even just a little bit," he looked ahead.

welp, as expected, Kazuki didn't win the 🍖 this time, although his reaction on the podium showed he REALLY wanted it 😂

But that's OK. Realistically, he had a very busy off-season with lots of shows, travelling abroad for choreography and training camp, then back for more shows. He actually did well considering the gruelling schedule!

I really hope he settles down now and focus on his preparation for the season, hopefully he'll feel a bit better with his new boots too. Considering there have been no announcements about Challengers yet, it seems JSF isn't sending anyone to the early challengers, that means Kazuki has about a month and a half to prepare for regionals in early October, and his GP assignments are not until November so he has time to prepare. I agree with surimi, his programmes are lovely and have loads of potential!

ETA: Thank you so much @rRainbow for the translations! Let's keep our fingers crossed that Kazuki finds a sponsor soon 🤞

Yup, I'm not worried about Kazuki at all. He has great vehicles this season, he has a valid reason for being underprepared at Gensan, and he has lots of experience from last season's top events to help him pace himself well. He'll be fine. :)
I just wish for him to find a sponsor to help him out with his expenses. He's just started searching thoroughly, so let's hope he finds someone soon. Good luck, Kazuki!

Yay, good for you!
In the meantime, I'm drowning here in my fury at JSF. No Challenger assignments so far. GP France is likely too expensive for me. Kazuki is saying he hasn't got a word of Challengers yet. Sota is saying his first comp will be Chubu regionals at the end of September. What the bleepity bleep, JSF!? Everyone will be busy grabbing points in the absence of the Russians, and JSF will happily hand over Challenger medals, worth many points, to Europeans and North Americans while their own skaters sit at home and one or two GP is their only chance? They can't be serious, they're treating their skaters worse than a mean stepmom.

Really?!?!
I just though that every federation was late cause Lombardia Trophy’s entries have not been announced yet, and I seem to remember that, before covid, announcements were made at the beginning of July…
I also asked for a day off to go to Lombardia but if the Japanese skaters are not there I don’t want to go anymore

I do hope you're right... hope dies last. All we know is that Kazuki isn't aware of any CS assignment for him at the moment, and Sota says his first competition will be the regionals. I don't know about the others. I hope JSF isn't compensating for JGP by sacrificing Challengers.
Fingers crossed for the Japanese skaters. I have it the same way as you, I'm ready to go to a Challenger other than the US, but not if there are no Japanese.
