In Keegan's case, he had said that his body was no longer able to continue.... he needed to warm up and cool down forever at training... etc as recovering was no longer like it used to be. I have returned to "recreative" swimming this year and I know the feeling... I could swim every day before... now I need a day off between heavy trainings... Thankfully, I am not trying to compete
However, with elite athletes, what often happens is that after a period of rest, their bodies recover and they feel sometimes fitter than when they were in the peak of training/competing. So in that sense, I can see where he is coming from. He feels good. His jumps are back. It's only a short season if he is intending to only do the Olympics... His kids are older. Etc
Why not then? It's really his choice to make. It's his sacrifices to make, because he will have to train and work hard. He will have to travel to competitions, not seeing his kids. He will have to provide his whereabouts and be tested by WADA regularly... He will have to be the center of these 8 page long threads where people discuss his life choices ad nauseam
Kudos to any athlete, who, by love of the sport and competing, and by respect for what it means to be selected to represent their country for the Olympic games, go through "unretirement".
