Koshiro Shimada

We caught up with Japan's Koshiro Shimada who talks about his anime roles on ice and how he was able to relate to the characters.

Known for his ability to bring extravagant characters to life on the ice, he took on the role of “Sanji” in the anime-themed show “One Piece on Ice,” alongside former training partner Shoma Uno.

In the spring of 2024, Shimada also portrayed a character in the show “Hyoen” while performing alongside his idol Daisuke Takahashi. He describes how he easily adapted to playing a partly female character and the positive feedback he received from the audience.

Listen in!

Koshiro's Instagram post about GP France this year is incredibly touching. I really appreciate his honest take about life as a figure skater and I'm glad so many people were able to support him! 🥺 He also gives a shoutout to Kazuki in the Japanese portion of the message!

Personally, I'm glad Koshiro was able to hang in there long enough to earn a silver medal! 😊 🥈

Koshiro has been cast to appear in the newest Hyoen production, which will be a loose adaptation / a reimagining of the folk tale of Momotarō / the legend of Ura:

He did an excellent job as the younger version of Tokio, one of the two main charaters, as well as a queer "alien" in last year's production, so I'm looking forward to what he will bring to the table this time. ☺️

Koshiro as Inukai Takeru (in the upcoming Hyoen production), one of Kibitsuhiko's (the inspiration for the character of Momotaro) three companions, who in the legend of Ura was “faithful to his master and fought courageously against his enemies“:

Koshiro Shimada has switched to ice dance

Koshiro was today’s selector of tv Asahi’s “Playlist on Ice”. His choice of motto was “Raffiné”. No big surprises, but many great picks in my book, including four fine ice dance programs (of course! 🥰) These were the programs he selected:

  1. Tatsuki Machida – East of Eden
  2. Riku Miura & Ryuichi Kihara – Hallelujah
  3. Wakaba Higuchi – Skyfall
  4. Lilah Fear & Lewis Gibson – Vogue
  5. Satoko Miyahara – Madame Butterfly
  6. Yuzuru Hanyu – Ballade No. 1
  7. Gabriella Papadakis & Guillaume Cizeron – Moonlight Sonata
  8. Daisuke Takahashi – In the Garden of Souls
  9. Tatsuki Machida – F.U.Y.A.
  10. Juulia Turkkila & Matthias Versluis - Bewitched
  11. Shoma Uno – Loco
  12. Koshiro Shimada – City Memories
  13. Deniss Vasiljevs – Sarakiz / Battle Drums
  14. Kana Muramoto & Daisuke Takahashi – PotO
  15. Stephane Lambiel – Un Giorno Per Noi (exhibition)
  16. Mao Asada – Cello Suites (exhibition)

As a bonus there were glimpses of Ikura’s and Koshiro’s ice dance practice. I’m impressed with what I saw. They seem to harmonize well and there was footage of a pretty secure looking stationary as well as a straightline lift (the exact same one that Kana and Dai used to perform in PotO with the same entry, one-foot feature and all) – quite complex lifts for such a new team in which both partners are new to the discipline.

I uploaded the episode on google drive:
