Kwan and Slutskaya each without Olympic Gold, does it seem picture is wrong?

In sports and competitions every athlete knows that on any given day - the underdog can triumph over the favourite. Just like Buster Douglas knocked out Mike Tyson. That's what's great about sports nothing is guaranteed.

Like the Boxing reference. :agree:

Also, lest we forget this is on Ice.;) Thinking the degree of variables is a little greater for our favorite sport.

oh come on. That was a totally different era. don't even give me these "what-if" scenarios any more. If Cop was in place back then, THE SKATERS WOULD HAVE COME PREPARED FOR IT. (Then the outcome might have been different, blah blah.)

Same if this Olympics was judged under 6.0. (maybe there wouldn't have been so many falls, especially in dance?!)

I didn't give you a what-if scenario, I was responding to someone else's.

Don't get your tights all in a wad over nothing, dear.

I have read on other boards several posters that say MK is not a legend because she doesn't have an OGM; fewer posters say the same about IS. I have yet to read on any board the idea that men (esp. Kurt) or pairs (S/Z) are not legends because they don't have an OGM. IMO, this is another example of skating's "double standard" for ladies skaters as opposed to everyone else. (After all, can anyone recall a newspaper column criticizing Todd for taking a bye to the '92 Olys -- or the USFS for giving it too him? Yet, several columnists made a "crusade" against MK's bye.)

that's rediculios. I and i assue that sarah hughes and oksana baiul are "legends" because of one ofur minuite program that happened to be better than the other once in thier lives. I legend is not only one medal. It is the collection of 9 cosecutive natioanl titles, 10 overall, 5 world titles and a silver and a bronze from the olympics games. It is the legacy of a passion for a sport that lasted over a decade and the dedication that a certain skater has shown every time she took the ice.

Kwan and Slutskya each without Olympic Gold......

I guess I look at this situation differently than other posters. I pretty much figure that Kwan and Slutskya both had two opportunties to win an OGM. They had the same opportunity as the other skaters each time. We could discuss endlessly the reasons they didn't get the gold medal but the real reason is that they didn't step up to the plate at the time they most needed to do so. I feel the blame, if you will, lies on their shoulders. They needed spectacular performances and they didn't deliver.

I would have loved to see Kwan win an OGM or even Slutskya for that matter. I'm not a particular fan of Lipinski nor Hughes and especially not Arakawa. But I accept the fact the they skated better than the competition on those particular nights.

I have accepted that figureskating is very unpredictable.

I basically feel the same way. It's not like they didn't have their chance at one.

I'm with NYMKfan. Phooey on the Olympics :disagree:, they had their chance.

Yay for Michelle. We will be marveling over her performances (they are preserved on tape for all time!) long after the Winter Olympics have been forgotten.

The Winter Games WON'T be forgotten. this very thread proves that

that said, I wouldn't really mind overall if they were. The Summer games, on the other hand, are the real deal...the real Olympics

It is interesting the Winter Olympics have all sports that have a very prominent World Cup or like figure skating Grand Prix circuit, plus an annual World Championship, an established life of itself really. The Summer Olympic sports, alot of them the Olympics are the be-all-end-all more then the Winter Olympics.

Julia S (stripey hair.) Who is Ggranny?
Nubka, you've been here for a couple of years and you don't know who our Grgranny is?  Grgranny is one of the best, sweetest and kindest people on this board. She has the greatest sense of humor. She also keeps us in line with our spelling. In other words..........  SHE'S THE BEST!!!

hmm, you also have soccer (or football, or whatever you call it) that's in the Olympics but has the World Cup as its premiere event. Tennis has its majors and Wimbledon as its premiere event. Basketball has its World Championship series (and in the US, the NBA Finals are much bigger than the Olympic event). But I think other sports like swimming, diving, even gymnastics rely on the Olympics to a certain degree to maintain exposure and interest. I think skating falls into the latter category. Without the Games, no one would even care about skating. At least you have that to thrust it back into the limelight and in the interest of the general public every four years.

This is a topic that certain fans of Ladies figure skating suddenly appear out of the woodwork with their opinions. It's easy for them to speak about past results or say nothing until the past is brought up again and again. For me, they offer nothing with regard to present day figure skating

The thread will get many pages with the same fans delighting in the topic.

So what is your point no I take that back I get your point. Sounds like disapproval to me. This thread is about past performances so people respond in kind.

it takes all kinds of fans to make a skating board... thank GOD we don't all think, speak, and act alike :)

The season is pretty much over, so it comes as no shock that the summer threads begin again.

Sorry about the rant, but I get tired of reading the same old comments since 2002. And you are correct, the opinions repeated as much as they are from the same people are justified on a forum as diverse as this one. Mea culpa.

Who cares about OGM these days?

I do! I think it's one of the most important titles. I think Michelle, and Irina, and many other great skaters in other disciplines cared it so much so that they didn't get it. I remembered to see how nervous Michelle was at 1998 Olympics, much more nervous than she was in any other competitions, same was happened in 2002.

well in the case of MK rehashing goes back even further than that...

but really what else do we expect once worlds is over?

yeah. We get threads about skaters' eyes, skaters' hair, etc.

But I typically don't like re-hashing the past. During the offseason, what else is there to talk about?
