Skating legend Michelle Kwan will light torch at State Games

“We’re thrilled,” said Tom Osborne, president of the Colorado Springs Sports Corp., which hosts the event. “She is just a terrific Olympian. She will ignite the crowd.”

I just might have to go and check this out! It's only a little over an hour's drive to the Springs from where I live. Oh and BTW, speaking of Kwan, I can't believe no one wished her a happy birthday here on Golden Skates. So ~ happy belated birthday, Michelle!

Is this a new competition, or something that happens every year?

Of course, they got one thing wrong ... she has NOT retired!!!!!!

And defintely not before the 2006 games. I can understand if they thought she retired after the games, but I don't get why they would think she retired before the games considering she showed up to the opening ceremonies, practice etc. and there was big hoopla about her pulling out.

It happens every two years. Here's the official site for the 2007 State Games of America (August 2-5, Colorado Springs, CO): http://www.thesportscorp.org/rmsg/2007_SGA/index.html
I didn't include the figure skating competition portion of the SGOA in my U.S./Canadian summer competitions list thread, but it's worth checking out.
(FYI, some of the more competitive U.S. skaters in Colorado, including Grand Prix rookie Jeremy Abbott, will compete the following week at the Colorado Championships, August 6-11, at the Apex Center Ice Arena in Arvada, CO: http://www.northjeffco.org/activities/ice/ )

Thanks for the info! The Apex is about 15 minutes from my house. I skate there quite often.
