Ladies' Free Skate

Julia popped half her jumps, had a scratchy landing in one of her triples and a hand down on her double axel. Lepistö rotated one more triple and had better spins, steps and spirals.

I see you're a big Lepisto fan, are you finnish?
Btw she was overscored in all goes, while judges were pretty strict in that with others....
and Sebestyen was miles above her in presentation how strage she got barely 30/100 above her...Iffy...

I am so happy for Laura. After all her difficulties she medals in her first Euros!

One reason for Laura's lacking jump content must be that she has been injured so often and for so many times, and could not practice any jumps for long long time. :( Hopefully she can still make it. Everything else about her is great and her landed jump are beautiful too.

Sorry but Sebestyen has no style and no presentation. And no transitions. Laura on the other hand is a beauty in those areas.

GOE was Laura's friend again, she had high TES.

Laura is a beauty in those areas?? she has just skating skills, which also sebestyen has. i agree she has better transitions...but??? Interpretation??? she's just a little piece of wood showing no emotions...

I hope you just mean that she could reflect the nature of the music and the program a bit better than she did / does and work a bit on her facial expressions. But I do not think that Sebestyen is superior to her on these areas.

Can't we keep the discussion on a cordial polite level?

I also think that Kostner got -GOE on her double lutz, because it looked like a planned triple, where else Lepistö's looked like a planned double.

Yes, I exactly meant that....(guess I was a bit harsh...)

I actually think you're right on the GOE. that has to be the only explanation possible...but isn't the negative GOE for the doubled jump only in the short program?

I think it is about the aesthetics. If you really pop a jump - and Kostner did - than the jump is not as clean looking and as well executed as if you plan a double in the first place.

I personaly would've had 1. Meier 2. Kostner 3. Sebestyen 4. Lepisto, but great skate from four ladies. Meier for winning free skate over Kostner for the second time this year! Go Meier!! Kostner for not having meltdown and landing respectable 5 triples including 3f-3t-2r after bad flu! Lepisto for proving she's not just a lutz-less pretty Euro girl! And my heart goes to Granny! I really hope she can medal again before she retires (if she ever does).

I don't think she ever will! Now seriously, even though she is not my favourite I got used to seeing her there, it will be a sad day when she won't be anymore.

Congratulations to all the ladies! Great competition.

Does anyone know why Carolina only got a level 1 for her spiral?

I just re watched Kostner's spiral and it seems very strange she got level 1...i counted the three seconds in each positions and they are there....does anyone know any strange rule?

I would have had Meier first as well, if she didn't double her salchow in the short program. Like it is it'ok, but kudos to Sarah for fighting back!!She showed great determination and made the competition very exciting!

I rewatched Kostner and it wasn't actually that bad: she doubled the lutz and didn't do the triple toe after double axel. What was REALLY BAD was the missed flying camel combo spin at the end. Why can't she ever conclude well this program?? It's annoying

I know it's really weird she got level 1 on it. i counted the seconds too and she has good positions and edges. Really weird.

I totally agree. When I see Carolina land 3-3-2 and dance through her step sequence section, it puzzles me why she's not a world champion. But when she spins, I'm left thinking why she's even up there. What's bothering me is that she hasn't improved a bit in that area over so many years. On the side note, Meier really should learn triple loop.

OMG I didn't notice Sarah didn't have a triple loop, didn't she have it last year in her long? I probably dreamed about it...

I propose Carolina go to some spinning specialist....it's really sad how she misses them when she's not concentrated...They are actually pretty nice and fast in the exhibitions, so I'm really puzzled...

Anyone has explanations about the level1 spiral? I'm really curious...maybe it's a mistake like with Stephane?

Edit:
today Sarah got her personal best! Wow! She really wanted the title!

:sheesh: I am not Finnish but I enjoy Laura's skating a lot. What does that have to do with anything?

I think Laura's basic skating is leagues above's Sebestyen. She deserved it today, imo. Julia has no one but herself to blame - if she started landing more triples and not popping all of them in most of her free skates, then she could contend for the Euros podium.

Carolina might have gotten - GOE on her lutz because she tends to telegraph them.

About Caro's spirals:

She actually did not hold any of the positions for a full 3 seconds. The judges only start counting once the skater gets secure in their position, so for example, with Caro's second spiral, the judges would only start counting once she gets her leg up with both hands touching the blade, not from the point where she changes edges. And also, sometimes the judges tend to be picky with the 3 seconds, so most skaters count "one one thousand, two one thousand, three one thousand" before letting go of a position, which Caro did not do. Don't you guys remember Shizuka counting ice cream in her Olympics programs?

That has to be the reason...but if you count the other girls' spirals, judges weren't really that picky (except with korpi in the short) since other girls were not that steady in the bielman too...well, whatever...

On the other hand: Meier did throughout the competition one real sit spin position (in her long, and in a combo spin, the sit spin was almost an upright), she rightfully received zero points for them in the gp, but here? judges completely overlooking that...

Kiira was way overmarked, as was Granny.[/QUOTE]

I dont think you should berate or name call any of the skaters, it is damn right unjust and rude, cant we have a civil discussion on the European's.

Thanks

Julia Sebestyen's nickname "Granny" comes from the other figure skating discussion board, and it doesn't mean she is/looks old or something. I think it was given her some years ago when she had not-so-fashionalble haircut /permanent and somebody joked it was like "granny's hair", and thus they begun to call Julia "Granny Hair" or later, "Granny". I understand it sounds rude, but don't think it was meant to be, and nowaday everybody is so used to it that it's almost a tender nickname... (Don't know what she would think about it herself if she knew though...)
BTW, just to be sure, I have not given her that name and have never called her Granny...:)
Some of the writers also didn't find Maria Petrova's haistyle flattering and so on...
