She stepped out of her 3A, but otherwise perfectly clean program. What's more, she has her 3 toe back! She did a 2A-3T combo instead for her second 3A. :thumbsup:

I can't remember a season in recent years like this one for the US women ... pretty dismal.

Still, it's pretty tough to ignore that score by Asada. 199 points? She can easily win Worlds with a dupe of that performance. Come on Kimmie!!

Oh yeah? How do you know that? She fell all over the place last year, just like most of the other US ladies are doing right now. But you're right about the Mao part. Remember Asada and Kim weren't at Olympics or Worlds last year, but barring injury you bet at least Asada will be there. (forget whether kim is of age). And with the Worlds in Japan it can either work strongly in her favor or against her.

Please. She scored 181 in Worlds in February with what was generally considered (including by you recently) as one of her worst skates. Kimmie beat her there by less than 10 ponits. Mao beat her at last year's TEB by less than 8 points.

Of course if you are now an international figure skating judge I'll have to reconsider my words.

Asada's scores seem to have been entirely inflated. She stepped out of her triple axel, and two of her loops in combination were so underrotated they were downgraded to singles. Also, one of her lutzes was reported to be "shaky."

And this is a skate that garners a monster 130 points? And the highest point total ever? Makes it hard to take seriously. I mean, I'm sure it was a great skate and all, but the scores seem ridiculous.

A Japanese ladies sweep as predicted. Looks like Suguri and Asada are headed to the GPF.

Mao's skate looked very good for me. Step-out aside, I did not notice any mistakes nor shaky landings on lutzes. The last loop in 3-2-2 combo looked a bit suspicious, but with 3A out of footwork (even with a step-out it was impressive, no men are doing 3A like this), two 3-3s and 2A-3T combo (thumbs up for getting her triple toe back) even a downgrade would not hurt her score much.

I enjoyed her performance, and now that she seems to have gotten her confidence back, I can't wait to see this LP (and SP as well) at GPF and Worlds.

Mao did very well but I'm not wild about the choreography of her LP - it has very little to do with the music except for a few extraneous poses - and I don't think at this point that she has the spark of temperament that the music calls for. I'm not sure why her marks were so magnificent. But she's still beautiful to see.

But that's not going to magically make her land those jumps. Bottom line is that once you go out there and compete, no one cares about how good you are. It's about what you can produce on that competition ice, and right now Mao and Miki seem to be the best at that. Let's see if they can keep it up come March.

Including by me recently? I always said that that was her worst skate to date. That said, however, I didn't consider it a meltdown like a few other folks did. But it was NOT a good performance at all.

I believe the skaters care. I would if I was in their shoes. After putting the hours in training and other sacrifices to prepare for competition, just to sike yourself out on the ice.That puts all that trainning in vain. Pressure and Stress is an equal part of every sport. I wouldn't bother competing if I couldn't handle the pressure.

So, who are the "good competitors"..., those skaters who can consistently put respectable programs out there? I agree about sending skaters out to internationals who seemingly can only land one or two triples in their FS... that may not be $$ well spent by a skating federation. :sheesh: I digress...this is food for thought for another thread.........
