Let’s dance 80’s! New Rhythm Dance article

How about something completely unexpected... like an 80's Country Music selection?

It was a great era, lot of excellent choices. Dolly Parton, Reba McIntyre, Alabama, Willie Nelson, Clint Black, Garth Brooks...

Or go with a movie soundtrack like Urban Cowboy.

Beats the heck out of 100 Top Gun and Michael Jackon programs.

500 Miles
Proclaimers

I would sing along..

Someone actually skated to that before, I can't remember who rn though.

Not Willie Nelson. When I was a baby, my parents found that playing Willie Nelson songs helped me to go to sleep. :bed:

I don't want to chance that happening now when watching skating.

Seriously, I like him. He really does have a unique, instantly recognisable voice.

Except that I'm not sure if it would work as an Ice Dance programme, I love this song:

Ray Charles & Willie Nelson - "Seven Spanish Angels"

Okay, I want all those people of course, like George Michael. But what I really need: Chock/Bates: Matia Bazar, Ti Sento; and then for Olivia and Tim: Gianna Nannini, Bello e impossibile+Latin Lover. :hap10: :hap10:

80s was a nice decade for my country and i like all the songs you mentioned (how do you know them?) but since we're here...why not the immortal Raffaella Carrà?   i'd die for a program on one of her songs, the iconic ones are from the previous decade, but she had some good things in the 80s too, but you can't talk about 80s in Italy without mentioning Donatella Rettore (i'm looking at you italian teams)

Tracy Wilson and Rob McCall skated to "Stray Cat Strut" in the 1980s. Wikipedia isn't showing a list of their music by year as some articles do, but I remember seeing the program. I think it was an OD/SP/whatever they were calling the shorter program then.

:thank:I don't know why I had never seen that documentary, but now I have it bookmarked to watch over and over. Their 1988 FD is still probably my favourite program by any skater(s) in any discipline. I watched the dance practice sessions at the 1988 Canadian championships and sitting right behind the boards I couldn't hear a sound from their blades -- not just in smooth stroking, but in the running skips and hops as well. And I got to see Rob's favourite party trick, triple loop jumps in dance blades .:jaw::yahoo::jump:

I love that song.

I have a soft spot for Willie Nelson, especially the Stardust album, which is the world's greatest late-night porch-sitting music ever recorded.

A message for the skaters: If Willie Nelson can go off-brand from his outlaw roots and perform Moonlight in Vermont so sensitively it makes one weep, you can step away from your musical comfort zones, too.

Can I request a Duran Duran program? I don't think anyone has done that before. Something funky that includes "Notorious" would be great.

I suspect for Duran Duran, the urge to go literal and have a program about dancing on the sand would be too strong to pass up.

Also literal and appropriate era- The Kinks’ “Come Dancing” (1983) which has a good beat to work with on the ice

You’d need a team that had serious speed on the ice, but for something a bit different-

lol.. thanks for the plastic memories... i mean, this is before my time but i know this song... i guess it stayed popular for a long time. I don't think it qualifies though since it's 1977.

I guess "Slave to the Beat" would work literally for ice dance LOL

I think Nannini was really popular in Germany. Carrà and Rettore on the other hand I didn't know.... oh my god, youtube keeps going on, that is... what did you introduce me to... I am going down a road now... those outfits...

I guess I associate it with National Lampoon’s European Vacation which was (checks the google) 1985 and hadn’t realized it was that old. It’s definitely got that punk/new wave vibe to it.

you're welcome     and if you need more trashy stuff just let me know

Instead of trashy, what about comical?

We could have somebody skating to Father Ted singing about a relative of one of my neighbours!

Dermot Morgan - "Thank You Very Much Mr. Eastwood"

(I'm not sure how exactly Barney was related to my neighbour. Whether they were brothers, or cousins, or what. All I know is that it must have been close, because they looked VERY like each other!)

Believe it or not, this song was #1 in the Irish Singles Charts for 3 weeks at the end of 1985 / start of 1986. 😲

I can't believe I'm saying this, but listening to it, I do think the tune would suit Ice Dance. The problem is the lyrics. How on Earth would you interpret them?! :drama: :dbana:

I haven't read all of the posts on this thread, mainly because I've never even heard of most of the singers/groups/songs suggested. I spent most of the 80s ferrying my kids around and our drivetime music was kiddy-pop. My partner and I were still doing the odd local show in the late 80s and we tried to choreograph a program to Enya's Orinoco Flow, but it didn't work for pairs. Too much pizzicato, not enough powerful flow (pun intended), but maybe dancers could do something with it? I loved the song, though, and others by Enya. We mostly used either classical or shows, with Les Miz perfectly timed for that decade. I Dreamed a Dream is overused, but I wish I had a film of our short program to Stars. Stamina was not my thing, and that song builds so much towards the end the music carried me even when my legs didn't want to. :dbana::ghug::points:
