Jordan Stolz is epic.

He just won the 500 m with a new Olympic Record. De Boo also beat the record finishing second.

In a previous pairing, Laurent Dubreuil had beaten the Olympic Record.

I am crazy elated because Laurent is my favourite Canadian speed skater of all times :). and well, in 2022, he had a bad race and finished 4th... He then won the silver in the thousand ... but this feels like redemption. He is the oldest man in this event and a father of two.

He was so happy with this bronze.

So the three medalists did it under the previous OR.

In the team pursuit, Canada ranked first in the quarters and will face the USA in the semis.
Japan and The Netherlands will be in a blood bath race in the other semis.

Not being a expert on long track speed skating but does no one compete in all 5 speed events anymore like Eric Heiden did or was he just a different breed of athlete like Michael Phelps? The man won from 500m to 10,000m so no matter what Stolz does that record won't be matched anytime soon unless Stolz takes up the longer races which i imagine at only 21 he could still do.

They compete in the all-around world championships.
Jordan won the last edition.

They skate a 500, 1500 , 5000 and 10000

The superstar was Sven Kramer who won in multiple times.

Jordan is special because he can win both the all-around and the sprint championships

Jordan hasn't yet had a chance to participate in the sprint championships. Maybe he will go in 2026.

There is also the distance world championships.

Technically he could skate all distances but I think he does focus on 4 events : 500, 1000, 1500, mass start. I may be wrong about that but he certainly didn't take part in the 5000 and 10000 at the games.

What is the mass start? Sounds chaotic.

I misspoke a little i meant does any long track skater ever compete in all 5 speed distances from 500m to 10,000 in individual races for medals like at the Olympics like Heiden did? Was he just a freak of nature or are speed skaters more specialized now for speed or distance races?

I don't think anyone does anymore. There are more events too with the pursuit and the mass start.
The schedule is too tight, the competition too fierce.
The Dutch skaters often do 2-4 races.. I think Jordan is planning 4 but I don't know. As I said, he wasn't in the 5000 nor the 10000.
The schedule at the Olympics alternate shorter distances with the longer distances... so I can see why a skater cannot do it all. Friday, it was the 10000. Saturday the 500. To have the speed needed for the 500, you cannot race a 10kms the day before.

1500m. full of suprises

biggest one Stolz didn't win it.

second biggest one. Valérie Maltais won the bronze... very unexpected for me.
