Lysacek announces return to competitive skating

I believe I read something about Lysacek WDing from a show due to injury, does anyone know more about it?

What is the usual length of a skaters elite Sr career? 10 years?

Alissa started Sr in, what, 2001? Johnny in 2001 or so, Evan around the same time? They are over 10 years...

Jeremy since 06 or 07....

Mirai in 07 or 08... Rachael in 08 or so
That's misleading, though, as skaters often debut earlier at Nationals than they do internationally. There aren't that many skaters who have been skating as seniors internationally for ten seasons or more, though I can think of some - Pang/Tong, Pechalat/Bourzat, Joubert, Plushenko, Verner and Kostner; P/T and Plush have been competing senior since the 1990s.

Many times the older skaters have more mature, pleasing performances. (but then there's Joubert-how many times has he done Matrix?)
I agree that skaters can grow and develop as performers over the course of their careers. As for Joubert and The Matrix - two full seasons (though he didn't compete on the GP in 2011-12) and one event in 2006. Or, stated differently: probably not as many times as Chan skated Take Five or Lysacek skated Espana Cani ;).

I guess Evan has an awesome opportunity for another olympic medal maybe even gold with the team competition. I am not sure how this works but the usa looks good almost a sure thing for a medal in the team competition.

A silver, more likely. Russia should be stronger than the US in everything but ice dance, and they won't send their JV team like they did for this year's WTT. I figure Canada has the best shot at a bronze, as the Olympic format doesn't require much depth in singles. But if France can get Iliushechkina's release and citizenship issues sorted out, who knows.

I sort of wish that was true.....coz I love Jeremy's skating ........but you are giving US Skating more credit for competitive strategy than they deserve.

It's just not our way to leave a skater at home who earned a silver medal at Natls.

It is our way at times to boost the score of an athlete with even the most minimal Intl track record (call it the "Flatt rules") beyond all credibilty.

I think US Skating hopefully learned from that and if Evan makes the World team it will be based stricktly on how he skates at Natls.

I hope Ross Miner is treated fairly along with Rippon, Johnny, Dornbush or anyone else.

But I would not be surprised if that is not what happens. :disagree:

If Evan and Jeremy skate even reasonably well they are better than all of those guys, unless Dornbush really improves, so the USFSA would not have to bend anything. They would just have to give the appropriate scores and Evan and Jeremy would be the top 2 regardless how anyone else skates.

I think Ross and Adam are better skaters than Dornbush. We will have see how they do this season.

We all know if Evan skates OK he will get a spot on Team USA.

I find it far more interesting to wonder what will happen if Evan is not able to separate himself from a few of the others.

*ahem* KEEGAN!

OK, fair enough and Armin could also be mentioned. But guys who have like one good skate to show for their entire career are hardly a threat to the reigning Olympic champion.

Even Johnny would have to screw up royally not to beat them at Natls.

^ I see he has been replaced on one-day notice by Surya Bonaly. Bonaly is the go-to girl for all of these last minute cancellations. Any time you need someone right now, she's got a program, a costume and a plane ticket ready twenty-four seven.

it's easy when you view a skating program more like a gymnastics floor routine. ;)

Evan, maybe. But Jeremy? No one "saved" him in 2011. I doubt he'd be held up at all if he bombed again.

It will be interesting to see if Evan's injury keeps him out of Champs Camp this week.

Johnny also bombed at '09 Natls and was not held up or given a spot on the team even though he was sick and the reigning World Bronze medalist.

If Evan bombs he will not not be selected. If he calls in sick or inured ala Kwan will he be selected?

Weir got sick while he was appearing in a Yu-Na show, which was held very close to Nationals. My guess is that is why USFSA did not show much sympathy, so to speak....

Weir being sick may have been due to the travel and being in South Korea for a (sanctioned, I imagine) charity show. Or not. However, that show was held several weeks before 2009 US Nats. The USFSA did not show much sympathy because they had their favorites, and Johnny Weir wasn't one of them. Whether or not Johnny was to blame for that is another matter.

Since Evan Lysacek (your favorite) was the direct beneficiary of Weir's placement at Worlds the previous year, I'm surprised you feel the need to make such a comment. Had Johnny finished one spot lower in 2008, Lysacek would have watched 2009 Worlds on TV, or from the stands, and the rest of the Olympic cycle might have played out very differently indeed.

Dai at least deserved silver, only because Plushy made so many wonky landings and dozens of small errors that should have added up to bronze. I am a fan of all 3 men on the podium, but not so much the CoP. It makes for frantic programs in general.
