I think Silverlake's claim was that 6'2" is at the 94th percentile for all men, whereas the 94th percentile for all women is 5' 8.5"

Brian Boitano? In the Battle of the Brians he landed two to Orser's one and won the Olympic gold medal.
 
Rory Flack Burghart is also very tall with very long limbs. She had trouble with her jumps as an amateur in the 80's. If I recall she could only do one triple jumps at that time. Then after turning pro and marrying her ex-husband, she learned four others triples under his guidance. Her jumps were amazing when she landed them, but her height and the length of her limbs really could throw her off axis sometimes.

BTW She had the best split jumps I have ever seen.

I always thought so too, that she was more 5'6" or 5'7", but and her isu bio says 164 cm which is 5'4.5" and her NBC olympics bio says 5'5" and after seeing pictures like this

(Jeremy listed 5'9". Unsure if Alissa is wearing heels here but even if she isn't she looks about 4 inches shorter.)

I've decided that Alissa is most likely 5'5" or just under, has tall boots and blades, and that some of the other ladies listed as 5'4" (maybe Miki, Mao, Caroline, Kimmie, etc) may be more likely around 5'3.5" and sites round up as I haven't seen heights listed with halves of inches.

This is all speculation though. I have never met Alissa so maybe someone who has knows how tall she really is. She does seem very tall compared to a lot of ladies, but next to guys she is quite a bit shorter than most of them.

Last year in Cleveland at Nationals, I was standing next to Alissa in an elevator and I would say she is 5'4". I remember thinking that I had thought she was taller, so I have to agree with those who say she LOOKS taller in her skates, etc.

Just a minor correction, if you take 94% of 6'2", you get 5'9.5" (not 5'8.5"), I can't remember any elite lady skater in history ever be that tall. ;) Kudos to Evan for all his hard work! I'm especially impressed with his toe-pick jumps. His Lutz is huge and gorgeous. :rock:

By the way, Brian Boitano is 5'11", 3" shorter than Evan and he doesn't have quad. :p

okay, i'm not really trying to bust balls here, but who can really say that it's her height that has such an impact on her jumps? none of us figure skating mongers are currently coaching her as far as i know...

Khorkina's gymnastics were completely dependent on twisting elements for difficulty:

not the most "spectacular" so to speak, but effective.
so long as somebody of her body type can combine high level twisting elements, they will most assuredly succeed. the code was tailored for this kind of gymnast.

Khorkina isn't really tall though, at 5'5" in gymnastics she seemed big, but walking down the street she wouldn't. Nastia is only 5'3" or 5'4". Essentially you don't have to be tall to look tall, but if you look tall without being tall, it's a useful advantage.

Many top lady skaters right now fit the "look tall without being tall criteria", such as Yuna, Mao, Alissa, Laura, Mirai, Miki. They are all thin with long limbs giving the appearance of a tall lady (especially on skates) without having to deal with the burdens of actually being tall. Lysacek does have to deal with these burdens, however.

Haha Evan is tall and therefore it's harder for him to do difficult jumps. Mao, Alissa, Miki are not tall and just look tall, so the same argument cannot be made for them.

As for Mao and Miki, there are a lot of pictures of the whole Japanese team together and Mao, Miki, and Oda always look nearly the exact same height. Takahashi is only slightly taller. Mao and her sister Mai are the same height as well as far as I can tell in all the photos and videos I've seen of them together, they look like twins. Mao is listed as 1cm taller than Miki which is probably about right and I think at most Mao is 1 in taller than her. Yuna is also about the same height, maybe at most 1 in taller than Mao. Most of the good female skaters right now are all pretty much 5'3"-5'5" which is very much average height.

Evan is much taller than average height.

Oops, my fault. But I'm surprised that 94th percentile for all women is only 5'8.5", I thought the number should be higher, at least in US, so probably that's based on international data?

Biotano can do quad? Did he ever land one in competition? As for Caro, many people said her jump issue is more of a mental thing, but I still think her height caused more trouble to her than other girls.

Lisa-Marie Allen is the most successful female skater of that height I can think of.

By the way, does anyone know if Evan and Mirai will have teleconference before Nationals? :love: All of the other Olympic hopefuls got so much publicity these days, but our reigning World Champion and former National Champion are keeping so low-profile recently. No news, no interviews, no update, no nothing. I hope their trainings are going well. They're two of my favorite skaters, I wish them the best of luck at Nationals! :clap:

Yes, that is internationally, in the US it would be a bit taller and in Asia it's probably shorter. In Japan the average height of a man is 5'7.5" and a woman 5'2" which I was surprised to learn.

I am curious about the teleconferences too, especially because Mirai and Evan have the same coach and I have not seen anything about either one. I hope they have a teleconference, I'd love to see those! Mirai did not skate at the Skate Canada Gala Ex the other day though so I'm wondering if something is up, all the other 4th place finishers performed.
 
I'm sure Frank has them focussing on nationals and not with these "silly interviews"... at least I hope so. No need to have journalist goad Evan into the tired rivalry crap between he and Johnny.
