Mao Asada plans comeback

If she could do a 3Lutz out footwork with consistency and never get an 'e' call, sure, but it's asking a lot of her to nail 3Axel, 3Flip+3Loop, and a 3Lutz out of footwork in the SP. That's just asking for all kinds of costly deductions. 3Sal isn't a great jump for her and doing solo 3T with 3Flip+3Loop combo is actually worth less than 3Flip+3Toe and solo 3Loop, hence why I'd really want her to go for the latter. She's a lovely skater and it sucks to see lovely skaters screwed over because of random CoP deductions that can be avoided.
But 3F-3T--for Mao--is just as likely to get < as 3F-3Lo.

Her salchow's gotten better, so I wouldn't be too worried about that as the solo jump. Or 3T. I agree the 3Flutz is a bad idea--likely to get e every time, ending up with as many points as a good double axel.

But 3F-3T--for Mao--is just as likely to get < as 3F-3Lo.

I see no evidence of that. Her 3Flip+3Loop has constantly been downgraded but the one season she actually did 3Flip+3Toe with correct technique, 2007-2008, it was ratified at almost every competition. For some unknown reason she simply never did 3Flip+3Toe again after that season.

this is the best way to start my day ! Hope it's true, she 's a pure poetry on the ice ! I miss Mao soooo much !

I really felt what Mao achieved in Sochi was just the beginning. She still has a lot more to offer. I've been hoping all year she will make a come back.. I really hope its true..

Same!! I'm so happy that she's planning to come back next season! It's sure going to be a great season with everyone planning comebacks (Mao, Plushenko, Patrick).

Oh my, please let it be true!

I don't care if she wins anything or not, I'd just be happy to see her competing for at least one more season.

Having said that, there are a couple of acheivements that are begging to be added to her already-extensive list of records and world-firsts... two GP wins and a win at the GP final would:

a) make her joint record holder for the most GP events won in Ladies (currently held by Slutskaya), and also
b) make her the sole record holder for the most GP finals won in Ladies (currently joint record Asada & Slutskaya)

I guess she would have a fair chance of a couple of GP series wins, depending on who she had to go up against. But a win at the GP final is a tall order these days... O_o

Also, another win at 4CC and she'd become sole record holder for most wins in Ladies (currently joint record Asada & Suguri)

Mr. Sato told her, "You need practice because you have ice shows, but the competition is harder than you think", and gave her advice to consider her comeback continuing training. If she decides to do that, there is possibility that she will not announce her decision on May 18. However Mao has already ordered new edge and several pair of skating boots.

Looks like she is ready, but we'll see :)

(.....) 3Flip+3Toe with correct technique, 2007-2008, it was ratified at almost every competition.

I only remember Mao doing 3F/3T at 2008 Worlds, so I youtubed it and voila! I was able to at least find its combo from 2007 GPF. https://youtu.be/bYJ_mG6Qvno Ahh nostalgia. It's kind of crazy that the huge 3axel here received negative GoEs, but anyway thanks for reminding me :)

Back to her unconfirmed comeback, I could see her leaning towards this decision from her radio program last month. The guest, Midori, gave her advice like "the most important thing is not to have any regrets. If you have any, you should go for it."

I'll be over the moon if she does decide to come back!!! It's be SO exciting to see her compete with Tuktamysheva, who is pushing the ladies' field now (go girl!), in the mix! The harsher edge deduction is worrying, but I'll be just happy to see her competitive programs again!! My SP layout suggestion is: 3axel, 3loop/3loop, 3flip!

What is the Japanese name for NORMA DESMOND? Just wondering. Is it Mao Asada?

The (f)lutz will probably keep her from attempting the 8-triple LP in the future... *sigh* 3Lze is now worth about as much as a good 2A. I'd love to see her get the lutz down to a !, but she probably has enough on her hands with 3A, 3F-3Lo, ect. I guess she'll switch the lutz for a second 2A.

If she wants to be really ambitious, she could try 3F-3Lo or 3Lo-3Lo in the SP (which would break 80 points if she can rotate them).

Hmm then that leaves the final jump out of steps to be?? If she can regain the 3F-3T, the solo jump out of steps can be a 3R - her fav. Otherwise, the combo can best be 3R-3R and the 3F be her solo out of steps. Couple that with a rotated 3A, then she will break her own SP record big time and go over 80. Even Liza tuks with her 3A and possibly 3Lz-3T will find it nearly impossible to overtake Mao on this, since she still does not have the sort of maturity and SS to match her pCS wise.

I figured you mean that it is likely she will get dinged and < on the 3F-3R? In theory, the BV is the same but in reality, tagging the 3R as the second jump is far riskier and tougher - so 3F-3T and 3R is safer than 3F-3R and 3T and the BV remains the same. The former is more likely to get ratified and get + GOEs as opposed to a < call and -GOEs. I certainly think practising the 3F-3T is the smarter option unless she can pull off a 3R-3R. I really doubt her lutz will get ratified with no e call. I believe that if she is coming back, the 3A will still be her big focus.

I wish you could see my face when I saw the thread.

And now, even though I will look like a 5-year-old child, please let me celebrate.

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSS! YAAAAAAAAAAAAY! THE BEST NEWS OF THE YEAR!!!!!! PLEASE, LET IT BE TRUE! :party2:

come back Carolina, Yuna, Joannie too then. It would be great to see them as well. I have mixed feelings. I do think Mao has wonderful quality but she lost to Yuna in two Olympics and really nothing will make up for that. In some ways I think other ladies deserve the limelight but skating is a selfish sport. I wish Mao well but I hope this does not hold back other skaters whether it be opportunities or media attention.

It is not negative. It would be awesome to see these other skaters comeback I do admit I like to see fairness and Mao has a lot of uber fans on this website but I did not see the same excitement for Korpi or Chan and they deserve the same welcome greetings too. It is just Miyara and co were developing. and it is the truth that skating is a selfish sport as many things are. I kind of cheer for the under dogs lol because Mao has so much support. Also, I do not want to see her a shadow of her former self. I remember her as a champion. I was saddened to see the way stars like Michelle Kwan, Sara Hughes, Maria Butyrskaya, Elvis Stojko and all left.It is her life and she is a lovely person. I just am cheering also for the under dogs like the Russian ladies and Americans who do not get the love on this website - I appreciate this website have extreme fans compared to the rest of the world - who sadly could care less and dn not know or understand skating or probably care.

I would love to see Mao return this season - for one selfish reason - so I can see her skate live at Worlds in Boston :)

I think if she still feels she wants to compete and has more of that life in her then why not? She'll be 25 when the season starts. I know that's "old" in figure skating years, but we've had older skaters than that compete.

I am surprised by your comment. The Russian ladies and American ladies are not the underdogs right now in skating. They are quite dominant. And also they have a lot of support on this forum I feel.
As you say skating is an individual sport and if Mao wants to and is able to come back then I don't see why she shouldn't to preserve the limelight for other skaters. If she really comes back she "deserves" the limelight as much as them. (and don't get me wrong I really like all the Japanese ladies).
Also that people were less excited about Kiira or Patrick. Well it is nothing about fairness or who deserves what. Mao is just more popular than them. You can't force people to be excited about something they don't really care about.
Finally, you bringing the "she lost to YuNa twice at the olympics" is unnecessary. First it is inaccurate and then so what? Her eventual comeback is not about changing the past it is to challenge herself and try to accomplish even more in her career.

personally I think if she comebacks the 3F-3T is her best bet, that and the 3Lo at Worlds 2014 gave Carolina a 77 score, if she can do it with the 3A that would shatter a lot of records

There's a video of her practicing the 3Lo-3Lo before, that and the 3F as a solo jump would be worth even more points but I feel like judges will mark it as UR no matter what
