Mao Asada's jumps -- discussion

To be honest, it looked like every single one of those 2A were at least 1/4 pre-rotated, even Yuna's. Go look at Evan Lysacek's 3A and Caroline Zhang's 2A and then we'll talk about pre-rotated axel jumps.

Joanni's axel is hard to see (too far in the video). But, the difference between Mao's and Yuna's is clear. YuNa takes off (both edge and toe) within 1/4 turn, while Mao's toe takes off at 1/2 turn.

The practice videos during off season and pre-competitions often show her 3As that look just so easy. I do not know if they are not showing the failed attempts though. But it is really interesting she has succeeded so infrequently in comps.

Maybe they only show the videos where she lands it?

Kim fans should be more respectful of Asada. While Kim's 3Lz may be a 1/4 turn more rotated in the air than Asada's 3Lz(e), Asada's 3A is 1/2 a turn more rotated in the air (and usually higher) than Kim's 3Lz.

3Lz needs 3 rotations in the air while 3A needs 3.5 rotations.
More rotation of 3A than 3Lz is not something to respect.
It is rather compulsory.

Asada got 5.50 points for her 2A in the TEB SP. If Asada had pre-rotated the 2A less, she would've gotten some +3 GoEs. Her 3A in the LP still got 6.82 points. Kim got 2.06 points for her 2A in the SA SP. Criticism of Asada's axel technique makes as much sense as saying Kim's 3F(!) is perfect. ;)

^ There seems to be a regular cottage industry in churning out these Mao and Yu-na videos. The girls should charge appearance fees -- they would make a fortune! ;)

Yuna's 2A rotates 1/4 turn more than Mao's.

I love how all of these posters love to point out Mao's flaws, but would never dare to point out any of Yuna's flaws.

I don't know.... I've always thought 1/4 prerotation(and maybe 1/2 for loop) is acceptable but 1/2??
That sounds weird. What you're saying basically means every jumps are supposed to be taken off forward except axel. Simply weird.

I also thought it was weird when I was only doing doubles; I felt like I was cheating if my blades moved too far around on the ice before I jumped. Eventually, I learned that's how it MUST be done for the Salchow and Loop, and I'd very much recommend it for the toeloop as well (on the picking foot). The Axel, Flip, and Lutz can differ more in terms of what will work, but 1/2 pre-rotation there is fine too.

:rofl::rofl:
Then it would get bankrupt immediately since I think it must have never made profits so far.
I never think such videos will convince someone in the opposite position or even in the neutral. They might be useful as a backfire though.

The data you listed is far from representative. I am sorry that you are making an error in your reasoning by selecting data that can only support your 'predetermined' opinion. Don't make your argument weakened by doing so. 6.82 of Mao's 3A is the fourth best score out of 12 attempts for 4 years, but 2.06 of Yuna's 2A is the lowest score out of 6 attempts in this season. Also I am quite sure that her 2A gets -GOE once or twice out of dozens of attempts in a season.

This thread is about Mao's jumps. ;) If you have something to talk about Yuna's jumps, go to the thread.(I believe there is one about it in this forum.)
And, as you know, people see what they want to see and say what they want to say. :)

All I was saying is that a bunch of posters here are a bunch of hypocrites. These posters love to point out every flaw in Mao's skating but refuse to point out any of the flaws in Yuna's. It's absolutely ridiculous.

but 1/2 pre-rotation there is fine too.

It seems that judges do not care much about pre-rotation. But, they have to do. More difficult jumps get more points; it is the principle. Some skaters rotate more than others for the same jump. They should be rewarded.

^^ Skaters who rotate more are rewarded. Honestly, I think jump downgrading is awfully annoying, and the technical caller at Skate A. is an absolute nitpicker. But downgrading is fair as it awards skaters who fully rotate the jumps by not letting those who under-rotate get away with it. Why would they factor in pre-rotation anyhow? Isn't it the number of times one turns in the air that's important?

wasn't there supposedly a TV competition in the works that was going to be a jump off between Tonya and Nancy in 1994? maybe the networks should look into putting these two up

"who cheats the least"... and then they let the fans duke it out. LIVE on PAY PER VIEW!

You might be able to understand "the hypocrites" if you think about why you can't or are not willing to add a post criticizing her jump in this thread. ;)

Ok, I'll criticize for you. When she jumps she stays on her toe pick longer than other skaters. Satisfied? At least I'm able to see the flaws in my favorite skaters.

jumps

Well I think physical shape of the body is not really an issue here because male technique is more difficult than female technique even to male skaters. Moreover I don't find any reason to differentiate Axel and call 1/2-prerotated Axel "poor" while the others "efficient."

I think there are simply two techniques: traditional orthodox one and poor cheated one. The manual advocates the latter just because it is not penalized these days. I strongly disagree with this kind of attitude.

What you and many people who have either never skated or coached skating realize is that jumps have always been done this way, using the techniques in the manual is not somehow cheating, it is mearly the way these jumps are performed. No one is doing double or triple axels taking off forward, no one at worlds is doing a triple toe and leaving the ice backwards, it is set up on a back edge but part of the take off is to turn forwards as you leave the ice. I would say its impossible to do more then a double leaving the ice backwards, lol, i've tried.
