What can happen in a week! Having been away for seven days, I'm just catching up on skating news and was surprised to see nothing (unless I've missed it which could well be as I'm sleep deprived) on the new Canadian/US team of Morgan Matthews and Leif Gislason. Has anyone heard confirmation as to who they will skate for? If they compete for Canada, they can compete sooner (if they were to earn and be granted a spot) as Morgan's last competition internationally was, I believe, COR.

Morgan first chose a coach, Linichuk at the University of Delaware. Then she auditioned Gislason. I think that her intention is to train in Delaware, which makes it less likely that she intends to skate for Canada.

It is too late for the 2010 Olympics as far as either one changing citizenship. The Olympics is less than 3 years off, and even the most relaxed residence requirements would still demand that Morgan live in Canada for most of the time from now til 2010, and training in Delaware precludes that.

If their goal is 2014, then Gislason has sufficient time to get US citizenship. Under the new rules, it takes about 5 years now for persons of special ability.

Is it possible that Morgan would seek Canadian citizenship?
I ask this because the Canadian competitors after the first two at the nationals there is a big gap in cop scores. Weaver and Poje are a very good match, but Gislison and Matthews with their power might overpower them in the next year?

The only concern would be her ability to honestly maintain Canadian citizenship requirements for the next Olympics in that they are rather strict.

Does anyone have real information about these Canadian citizenship requirements?

Well I for one would hate to see W&P deprived of an international place at Worlds by this new pairing, if they did beat them at Canadian Nats, which I wouldn't think was certain. W&P are a very exciting team.

Skip Olys

Perhaps they intend to hone their skills enough to compete at a world level and have FUN and enjoy the partnership and skip the Olys.

Only one member of a dance team is required to be Canadian under the proposed rules being put forth at the Skate Canada ACGM in May. Here's the document quote:

In the case of a pair or ice dance couple, at least one partner must be a Canadian citizen. The other partner may be a citizen or a resident of a country of any other ISU Member and need not reside in Canada.

So Morgan can live and train in Delaware and compete for Canada with Leif without ever setting foot in Canada until Canadians in Vancouver!!!

Isn't it a IOC rule? Can Skate Canada just unilaterally pass a rule that says Canada does not have to abide by the same rules as everyone else?

You are right -- the citizenship rules for Olys are set by the IOC.
