Men FS

He may be one to watch for 2010. To already say he should be the one to watch is very premature. In addition to Takahashi out there there is Joubert, Lambiel, Plushenko maybe returning, Verner, Oda.

Plishenko will not return, Takahashi is progressing every year in the right direction and I am not feeling he would suddenly regress. Lambiel will probably not last till 2010. I somehow doubt Joubert's chances of winning OGM. So yeah, there will be some new blood coming to upset.

It is amazing how strong the mens field might be at the 2010 Olympics. Maybe:

3 Americans- out of Lysacek, Weir, Carriere, Abbott
3 Canadians- out of Chan, Mabee, Buttle, Reynolds, Sawyer (though I doubt Sawyer)
3 top non-Russian Europeans- Lambiel, Joubert, Verner
2 strong Japanese- Takahashi, Oda

I guess for those dreamers you could throw Plushenko in, and for you truly delusional dreamers Yagudin.

I think Lambiel will easily last until 2010. He says he feels rejuvenated and he had no injury trouble over the summer for the first time in awhile. He is younger then Buttle, Plushenko, Joubert, Weir, and the same age as Lysacek.

I dont doubt Joubert's ability to win the 2010 gold even though he isnt my favorite skater. The judges love him, and he has the jumps of a potential gold medalist which matters most. I am not saying he will win in 2010 but it is certainly conceivable.

I agree on Takahashi staying strong, he needs to work on adding more quads and those little concentration lapses.

I know it!!! and love it!!! I'm really feeling some Chan love right now (just saw his LP on NBC)...I missed Carriere, but hope to catch him YouTube

Does anyone know if Chan has a successful quad in practice? His jumping techniques make me suspect that he would have trouble landing any. I would hate to see him go the Battle route.

Takahashi's falls were really too bad, but this is a nice program. I maintain that he has first rate jumps and footwork like a number of great men, but what really gets me about him is what I think Joe would call rtyhmn, AND i would add the best arms (or use of them) down to the figer tips of any man with, imo, perhaps the exception right now of Lambiel.

I missed the fist half of Evan's program (i'm multi-taksing and not very well i might add), but he looked good. I liked the white shirt, but had to giggle atq the black pants...although, what else do you wear with white???

Congratulations, Patrick! Mr. Coulson would be very proud indeed! I don't where he'll fit in 2010, but he's certainly headed in the right direction. And I don't know whether Patrick's working on quads yet, but I agree he certainly has everything else he needs.

But Evan wins my "best dressed" award for the guys right now. :)

Not trying to hate on Lysacek, but am I crazy or were the opening quad and triple axel quite underrotated? Just saw it on NBC, and it certainly looked that way, especially considering the way the judges are marking underrotation at this event.

patrick

I was really impressed with Patrick's free skate (didn't see the SPs). I wish Evan won though. He was much better in the FS than Takahashi but Takahashi's SP (the only one shown on nbc) was really good.

Yes. I glad I'm not the only one who think so. I thought it might just slipped under the radar.

Opening Quad was totally underrotated. I'm suprised it wasn't downgraded, considering the one he did in the SP was.

As for the 3Axel...Lysacek's 3Axels are ALWAYS short of rotation -- more than a quarter turn, probably not, but there might be a couple every season that do deserve to be downgraded. It's harder to do the Axel with his height...really gotta scramble to get those turns in. I give him credit for making the jump consistent. He's a hard worker.

Why oh why is there so much pointing out of underrotations? They are not easy to see.

Depends on where you're sitting...most especially how high up you are. Arenas seriously need to have a camera that is zoomed in on the skater at all times and shown on a big screen for everyone to see. Obviously, this is not a realistic expectation for all competitions, but it SHOULD be for the major Senior competitions.

After you've analyzed jumps for a long time, though, you begin to see things that let you know the jump was underrotated -- most importantly a skater's blade making a sharp turn as they come down. If that quick skid is really obvious, then the landing is almost surely more than a quarter turn cheated.

I have such a problem with Evan's Tosca. Of all the beautiful ones done in the past, I thought he slaughtered it. He looked more like he was in a bull fight. Sorry, but I just can't stand his style of skating.

I am so happy Takahashi won.

I was very impressed with Patric Chan, what a cutie!!!

It's only my insignificant opinion, but it looks like Evan is skating the same long program as last year only with different "background music.":disapp:

I noticed it too. The step sequence especially looked very recycled. But then I though it didn't matter in the long run, as long as the program was clean. It's Evan, and his fans will like his skating no matter what he does. As for his non-fans...

^ "Interpretation." Evan got a score of 7.80 for his "interpretation" of Tosca. This was his highest Program Component Mark. His Interpretation was better that his Skating Skills, better than his Transitions, better than his Execution/Performance.

I especially loved his Tosca-esque triple Axel. Much more sensitive to the nuances of the music than his Carmenic triple Axel last season.

I think they should do away with this mark altogether.

I don´t see that. In my opinion Carmen and Tosca have a very different feeling and that is what Evan is interpreting successfully. If one really starts to analyze programmes of different skaters, I´d imagine that one can find similitarities, if one tries to find them.

I´m really looking forward to see Evan skating to Tosca in US Nationals, as it is not a new programme that much anymore there.
