MEN

By this time, earlier JGP results are available for many of the men competing here, so it's easier to guess who will do well. And it is a bit easier to put together a preview. For each skater, I have tried to add more pictures, interviews, and videos versus their appearances in previous profiles.

I expect Ivan Bariev and Richard Dornbush and Dice Murakami to be on the podium. Dice has a quad, and Ivan and Richard have the two of the highest scores so far on the JGP. It should be a very exciting competition. Other JGP past medallists are here too, and if any of the favorites falter, Elladj Balde, Andrew Gonzales, or Nikita Mikhailov could medal too.

In fact, this is about as tough a field for the men as we have seen so far this season.

If you're going to the event, do not miss the performances of Javier Raya. He will not medal, but he's a very pleasing skater to watch.

8 Ivan BARIEV RUS 8
Coach: Marina Kudriavtseva
Personal best 187.47

Ivan has the highest score on the JGP so far, and has to be the top seed here at Capetown.

Coaching History: Tammy Gambill
His choreography is by Braden Overett, whose work I really, really love.

Richard won Cup of Mexico with a score nearly as high as Ivan Bariev's, so I expect the two of them to be in close competition for the gold medal here.

His best total score to date is 186.70 at Mexico JGP 2008

5 Daisuke MURAKAMI JPN 5
Coach: Nikolai Morosov

I was very excited about Dice's chances at Cup of Mexico, but alas, the Japanese federation did not have his entry in order. Dice skated one practice and returned to the US to compete at MidAtlantics very successfully. The Japanese federation rescheduled him for Capetown, and I hope they got his paperwork right this time!

Dice used to compete for the US but now competes for Japan. I'm not sure what motivated him to make this move since the Japanese team is,
if anything, deeper than the US team. Here's a montage of Japanese men who might be on the road to Vancouver. Dice is at about minute 3.
There are so many!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGyMhqidxRQ

That move has put a hole in his competitive resume.
He was 5th in Japanese Nationals in Juniors with a score of
156.18 last year.

In 2006, he was 3rd in the Mexico JGP and 4th in the Taipei JGP.

This might not sound too amazing. However, in the recent summer competition, Moran International in NJ, Dice won the Jr. SP with a score of 60.62 (which would have beaten Adam Rippon in Srs at the same event.)

He scored 118.32 [63.94/55.38 -1] in his LP with one fall. His music was Rachmaninoff’s Variations/Rhapsody on a
Theme of Paganini (techno version at begininning and end).
Jumps: 4t (looked good!), 3a fall/ur?, 3f (hung on), 3r-2t, 3z, 3f-2t-2r, 3r, 3s-2t.

So adding those up, he has a chance of scoring in the high 170's here. Based on those scores and his trick list, he might medal here.

Here's his exhibition from this summer at Moran (he is skating his SP to Night on Bald Mountain as an exhibition):

Dice was one of the Japanese skaters training in America who are profiled in this Japanese language documentary:

Murakami scored over 195 at Midlantics on 9/11.

There is a BIG difference between scoring at international competition and scoring at home competition. Many men who score over 200 points at home competition are not able to score more than 180 at ISU competition - it happens very often. I don't want to say that Murakami is not good skater but we can hardly judge his skating qualities due to score which he got at US competition.

Btw. Brezina got 220.29 at Nebelhorn Trophy 2008.

Midlantics is a huge competition where many foreign skaters participate. And Murakami IS NOT skating for the US, so he would not be getting a "home ice" boost.

And BTW, "B" Internationals scoring tends to be inflated when compared to ISU GP/JGP events.

I apologize for Daisuke's nation, he was repersenting US for very long and I didn't notice that he changed it.

I also compared his results from JGP Cape Town and Midlantics - components from both competition are really quite close. But as somebody wrote in Midlantics topic:,,The performance of the day was definitely Daisuke Murakami, who had probably the highest-ever score recorded for a junior man's short. (Although club competitions don't really count when determining personal bests.) "
In free skating Daisuke fell twice and I still doubt that he would be able to get 117.82 point at JGP for skating with two falls. In Cape Town he was also punished for underrotated jumps????

Overall I am curious to see him skating in Japanese Nats - hopefully some videos will be post on youtube.
