Beggin' your pardon, evangeline, who are the top men? Ya talking here at SC or just in general? BTW, AdaRipp is a two-time World Junior champion, First Continents gold medalist, placed 6th at senior Worlds his first time there, and is definitely one of the top U.S. men, even if you don't think that accounts for much. Power/speed, not sure what you're looking at exactly. Were you in the arena? Viewing on tv or online can sometimes be deceptive regarding speed. In any case, speed and power does not mean superiority -- lots of other qualities are involved, Adam is not a slacker in these areas. Fine, I give you the minor errors you mentioned in this sp, but overall, he definitely should have been scored higher, and Chan was overscored, IMHO. You surely can't say that Adam is not one of the top athletes in the sport of figure skating. He's right up there with the rest of the contending men. Adam does need to breakthrough in terms of rep and influence with the judges. Not going to Worlds did hurt him earlier this year, but he's in a good training environment right now, and I like what I see from him with this sp.
ETA: Agree, I had hoped to see more from Ross here (He kept the same sp from last year, so it's too bad he couldn't hit it out of the ballpark, and let judges do what they do anyway -- at least lay down your best). Both Ross and Ricky were given short shrift at Worlds because they were new to the senior scene -- they definitely should have placed higher. Both were clean under pressure. Maybe they are both going into this season feeling more pressure, but they should hold their heads high. It is not their fault the U.S. sends only 2 men to Worlds and we have many more men worthy of going to Worlds.
