Mia Caroline Risa Gomez

Mia Caroline Risa Gomez (born 21.12.2005 in Mexico City) is a women’s singles skater who represents Norway.

Mia is the 2022 Open D´Andorra and Santa Claus Cup gold medalist, and the 2022 Denkova-Staviski Cup silver medalist. She is the 2023 national senior gold medalist, two times national junior silver medalist in 2020 and 2022 and the 2019 national gold medalist in advanced novice.

Mia is coached by Nuriya Pirogova and Lorenzo Magri and trains in Stavanger, Norway. She began skating in 2012 at the age of 8 and her little sister Ella Celine Risa Gomez is an active figure skater as well.

Mia currently has all the Norwegian records for senior women with overall score of 163.04, SP score of 58.86 and free skating score of 109.15 points. She also has the Norwegian record for junior women SP of 54.73 points.

Mia will skate in Santa Claus Cup the next week. Senior women SP start on Thursday. This will be her last international senior event before Christmas. It will be exciting to see how she place in Budapest and if she will be able to get WC minimum next week.

I think Mia will get the EC spot for Norway, based on her results this season there should be no doubt that she deserves the spot. But Linnea Kilsand and Frida Berge will also compete in Budapest next week, so we will see how they do. But even if they would place better, Mia has better results from previous competitions, so this competition won´t decide alone.

Mia is leading the SP in Santa Claus Cup in Budapest In a messy event she was the only skater who skated clean and that gives her a 4 points lead before the FS tomorrow With a score of 58.86 it´s a PB but also a new Norwegian record in the SP for women. Linnea Kilsand had the old record with 57.88 points.
Not only that, but she got the WC minimum for the SP with a TES of 33.67 She landed all her jumps clean: 3T-3T, 3F, 2A. She switched out her loop with the flip and it paid off!

Wishing her the best for the FS tomorrow, fingers crossed she might get the FS WC minimum as well, and has a skate she can be satisfied with. I hope she stays on the podium and that it won´t be too much pressure for her leading...

And she is now qualified for WC as well The first Norwegian (yes, not just lady) qualified for WC since Anne Line Gjersem in 2018!

With her score of 163.04 it´s also a new overall record for senior women in Norway, Anne Line had the old record with 158. Now Mia has all the records in senior women, and also a couple of records in juniors as well.

Another impressive statistic, Mia has been on the podium at all her international senior competitions so far. She has two gold and one silver. Yes it´s Senior B events and it has not been the deepest field, but still it´s impressive and she scored around 150 points consistently the last competitions. Way to go

The WS points has updated now, and Mia has almost gotten the maximum points for senior B events with 475 points together this season. She is currently ranked as nr. 96, as this is her first senior season. This gives her a good chance to not be in the first warm up group at EC, but of course it will depend on the other entries as well. Further this season, as Challengers are done, she can only get points for Championships. WC and EC however give points up to 24th place, so there is a good chance she can get some more points before WC.

I´m not sure if Mia is in the selection for JWC this season. She only competed in JGP as junior so far and scored 138.43 there. She is still young enough for JWC. Pernille With just had her PB at Santa Claus Cup this weekend with 138.01, so Mia still has the highest score of the juniors so far this season. If they counted in her senior competitions as well she has clearly the highest scores. But normally only junior results counts in junior selection, and usually it´s the two best results - so she may not be considered if she doesn´t do another junior competition. However, domestic competition counts for selection as well, so she can easily do a domestic competition if she wants to be in the selection.

Since Mia most likely will go to WC in Japan, maybe JWC will be too close or the association don´t want to send her to both. I´m not sure what other countries do? Some send their best skaters to both JWC and WC if they are qualified? On the other hand, Norway has a very competitive field in juniors ladies now, so if they are interested in getting more spots for JGP next season, Mia should get the spot as well. Pernille PB in SP would not have made the FS last year at JWC, and that is the difference between 3 or 4 spots in JGP.

Edit: I just checked, JWC is actually before WC and it´s in Canada, so it will be a very long travel to do both and with not much time in between. It would probably be difficult to deal with such time difference with just a few weeks apart. I would think Mia wants to prepare for WC instead. Technically, Jr Worlds 2021/22 followed Sr Worlds 2020/21, but the pandemic certainly influenced which countries sent anyone to Worlds in 2020/21 (and probably also who they sent). 2020/21 Jr Worlds was canceled, and so were Sr Worlds 2019/20, so the last time there were "true" consecutive Sr and Jr Worlds was 2018/19 Sr Worlds and 2019/20 Jr Worlds.

Aleksandr Selevko and Luc Maierhofer, for example, competed in both 2018/19 Sr Worlds and 2019/20 Jr Worlds. I generally feel like it's not as commonly done in women's skating (possibly because the Women's discipline is a lot more populated even in small feds, and because the average age of the women's competitors at Jr Worlds is lower than that of the men's), and definitely decreases a lot once there's at least one strong senior competitor who has aged out of juniors, even if there are still other strong senior-eligible juniors representing the country.

I think she can, her only 3T now has been in 3T-2A-SEQ. But i´m actually not sure what her planned program content is. I thought from JGP content that she was planning to do the 3Lz-euler-2F on her opening lutz, but instead she always added it to a 3S later and made the lutz a solo jump. I thought from JGP she had a 3T-3T planned in her FS as well, so maybe she was supposed to do it instead of the 3S-Eu-2F if she had added the euler-flip on the lutz. But maybe she just decided to stick with her changed program content. She also does 3F-3T in training, but I don´t think she has planned it yet, she still struggles with her flip sometimes and it would be safer to add 3T-3T. So depending on if she wants to stick with the content she has now, she can add the 3T on the 2A. I think her 3T-2A-SEQ will stay.
