Mirai Nagasu

This SP is the perfect program for Mirai. I was mesmerized by the whole skate in spite of the fall. I love the beginning where she is still for the first few notes of the music and then the evocative arm motion to start the program. Stunning!

AGGHHH! So close to winning! Mirai's first part of her LP was gorgeous - jumps were terrific! Then she fell on something - not sure, maybe 3L and then the fatal blow was popping her axle (I think or maybe that was the lutz) - anyway even with the fall if she had at least completed the jump she popped I think she might have edged Higuchi. Shoulda, coulda.....BUT VERY good start. Mirai looks like she is in excellent shape and both programs are in a good point for the beginning of the season. She ends up third and very close to second. I'm hoping that the judges will start rewarding her components a bit more. Her spins are so superior to her most competitors and yet the margin of difference in scoring is slight.

Mirai was fantastic today. I don't think I've ever seen her look better. The choreography in this program is lovely and she looked so sure footed on all her jumps.

Tom Z's reaction in the kiss and cry was pretty cute too.

I cannot stop watching mirai's short program. It is a lovely combination of technicality and artful movements that flow throughout the program. Magnificent

I tuned into the live stream right when they were replaying her 3Lo and when I heard the announcer say 73+ I yelped! She's worked so hard to revamp her technique for the jumps and her arms move so lovely with the music :hap10:

I am just SO happy about how Mirai did, I actually cried a little. As a fan since 2006 or 2007 it's been hard at times to watch her, but all this time what I really wanted was just to see her skate like this again- not just with fully rotated jumps and high tech content (though that's fantastic too)- but with real depth of emotion, the kind of skating that really makes you feel something. I feel like every movement in that program was exquisite, complete, and poignant, and it all looked effortless too. I hope she'll be able to carry the momentum to the long program.

That sp was stunning. They say she prefers her long, but Jeff created a stunner for Mirai in this program. May she skate it like this all year long.

Thrilled for Mirai that she's getting recognized by the judges for a beautiful SP skate with cleanly rotated jumps so early in the season. She should continue to partner with Buttle in the future if this is what he can bring out in her skating. Good luck to her in the FS today!

So not the crazy dynamite skate like her short (I keep rewatching it and the more I see it the more I'm floored by it. The sure footedness. The speed. The quality. And how this program is tailored to Mirai. I defy any other top woman in the world right now to skate this program like she can) but still huge congrats to Mirai! She hasn't had to defend like this probably since 2011 and she even said herself she learning how to train and skate smart. That makes a massive difference. SO proud of her to take this win. I think by the end of the weekend she might be ranked #1 for the season and top 10 overall? Obviously lots of key players are yet to show up but that's nothing to sneeze at.

She also officially has the top short program score of the season so far!

Agreed! Hate to see those jumps glitches but she held it together and kept the choreography in tact. Mirai deserved this win!

Updated the first post with Mirai's great result at the 2016 Autumn Classic International, including her PB for the short program. Fingers crossed that she will also surpass her PB for the free this season!

Wishing her the best for Skate Canada at the end of the month. I will be there in person to see her skate so I'm looking forward to it :)

That Skate Canada competition is gonna be a great one! She's up against a great bunch of ladies, but I still think she can make the podium. I wonder if there are any tickets at all left for the Ladies Event. I have an all-event pass but am just curious.

Well it official! She's currently ranked #1 for the season and first in the challenger series. Jumped up to 9th in World Ranking and officially holds the seasons best sp score. Also she now has the 10th highest personal best score for the sp and at this moment only her FS score and TES FS score are not from competitions in 2016.

So wonderful to see this growth and progress for her. She said she's learning how to train smart and it shows!

Definitely UR... But... She is on track

Unless it's a desperate attempt to win a place on the Olympic team or win a medal at Worlds, she doesn't need it. If she skates her SP the way she did at the Autumn Classic and stays clean with that stunning LP, she will be a contender. However, this 3A practice has made her 2A particularly high and lovely so maybe it's worth it; just don't want to risk injury or over exertion.

This is what I feel too- I actually don't even really want to see her try to do a clean one in competition, but I think it's actually great she's practicing it because I think it's really helped her 2A (which is now, IMO, one of the best ones out there) and possibly is helping her under-rotation issues a little bit too. I agree that I hope she's not risking injury or over exertion but she's been training the jump for almost 2 years now and so far so good so hopefully she and her team know what she's doing :)

I love everything about Mirai's LP EXCEPT the first few seconds when she puts her head back and forward. Whatever that's suppose to symbolize, Mirai is not showing. She needs some sort of other symbolic gesture; maybe a simple spin or arm/leg movement to set the tone. The rest of the choreography is great. I hope they work on that first impression.
