Mirai Nagasu

Mirai really went after that 3A! Not the landing she wanted, but she got credited for full rotation. She was emoting the whole way through too :sad4:

Sadly the judges want to take off for URs on her even when they aren't...
Today's didn't look as bad to me

Good job Mirai!
Show them in the free!!

Eh...I get the URs but she was a little lowballed in the PCS...she was really REALLY emoting...I think she deserved more of a 67-68 rather than a 65.

I agree. Shin "carrot" Amano is the caller here, yes? I see that the 3 toe was iffy and definitely called UR, but I'm not convincedl that the lutz was under - it looked clean to me and she had beautiful running edge out of it. Glad she got the 3A fully rotated, even with a two foot landing.

Proud of Mirai for fighting through this program and showing expression (even though she looked like she was in pain at some points). I also see she went back to the maroon dress. It was in that dress she got her highest score last year on this program, so I wonder if that had anything to do with it?

Proud of Mirai ...

Shin Amano is not on the tech panel at NHK.

I too am proud of Mirai :agree:. Go get 'em with your FS :yay:.

An Instagram story from the official @isufigureskating account has a nice photo of Mariah, Mirai, and Carolina sitting together (at the FS draw, I think).
Each lady is tagged by name ... with the font for Mirai a little larger, plus the extra label of "Miss Triple Axel" added for her .

Mirai!!! Mirai!!! Mirai!!!!

That's all...

It’s a lucky dress. I think she’s started three or four seasons with it.

LOVED Mirai's FS today. Too bad the 3A couldn't get some more love but I like how her PCSs are slowly creeping up. The Miss Saigon music is perfect for her and I actually saw emotion today on her face. She needs to tone down that angry look for her SP - Chopin would be scared! It's more of a sad, tragic theme rather than a "braveheart" let's go get 'em fight song. Hit that 3A, let the judges continue to warm up to your artistry and you'll be well on the way in the 130s maybe 140s on your LP. This strategy is working, Tom Z!

Let's hope so and with that strategy, she could win Nationals. She's got her eye on the prize for sure.

I think she could've scored over 130 here had she hit all her planned content. The three jump combo was supposed to be a 2A/3T/2T - but she left out the 3T b/c she landed a bit forward on her 2A. Then again, she tends to get dinged with a UR on the 3T in the combo anyway, so maybe this was a smart move, having a 7 triple program rather than 8.

Mirai's tech score was the 3rd highest behind Polina and Evgenia, so that is something to be proud of! And the fact she has the highest score of the US ladies on the GP so far this season :)

The heat is definitely on (in Saigon)! Soooo happy with Mirai's fourth place finish here and I'm glad her PCS is going up for the free. She has really lovely lines :luv17:

Mirai!!! Mirai!!! Mirai!!!!

That's all...

Love this!!! :agree: I wasn't able to watch the ladies free live, and then put off watching because I was so nervous for her. And I loved her facial expressions in the short! It didn't strike me as choreographed, so to speak, but showing genuinely how she felt -- like, come on, I've worked so hard and I want to show everyone what I'm capable of! That's one quality that I love about Mirai, that she never appears fake. I'm probably in the minority but I think she has a lovely understated way of emoting that I personally much prefer over acted angst or smiles. As she said in the k&c, one more to go. I'll be rooting for her all the way!!!

I also enjoyed Mirai's facial expressions in the SP, and thought that they seemed genuine/almost spontaneous. She is usually pretty muted, I read something funny on Twitter where someone posted that the fire in Mirai's eyes at the end of her short was the Olympic flame itself. She is fighting for it.

I'm pretty sure that this was the first time that she has gotten positive GOE on her triple flip triple toe on the Grand Prix (she did it last year at her Challenger events and 4CC, but didn't get the rotation at her GP events). From Japan Open to here (I'll leave out International Classic because I can't remember the exact number of unders that she got in the LP, but I think there were maybe 4..), she has rotated 7 triples (Japan Open), 5 triples (Rostelecom), and 6 triples (NHK..the golden skate article incorrectly lists her as landing 5 clean triples, but it was 6) in her free program. As someone who is singled out by callers for review each time, I think that's very important and significant, and bodes well for nationals, as long as she can keep it together. I think that she'll also have her sp issues sorted out by nationals. I've seen criticism of Mirai that she only does well and rotates her jumps at 4CC events at the end of the season because the pressure is off at that point, so it was great to see her so very close to reaching her personal best here....we know that she tends to peak later in the season, so onwards and upwards from here.

potential of mirai's programs are very big if she lands and rotates all hers triples. it's just start of the season and i expect at the nationals and olympics she'll be very good prepared

While the placements weren't as high as they could have been - I'm thrilled for Mirai's showings in the grand prix!

From the context of pure skating this was undeniably her most successful grand prix ever. She had one "meltdown" which you could argue was because she was overwhelmed at the idea of landing a clean triple axel and for a meltdown skate she still scored what? 56? Usually she ends up with like high 40s low 50s when she melts down in the short.

She came within a point of setting a new personal best competition score at NHK.

Also not for nothing I took the averages of all her grand prix seasons before this and this is what she got:
SP: 57.33
LP: 101.9
TOTAL: 159.23

This season's average
SP: 60.66
LP: 125.7
TOTAL: 186.36

So there's DISTINCT improvement especially in the LP. We're talking an almost 30 point improvement. Even just the jump from last year to this year is striking.

With her track record of almost always vastly improving for January and February and the fact that at Rostelecom Cup she rotated 5 triples in the long which would have been considered lucky in years past the growth is clear.

I'm just so proud of the work she's put in this season. She's not backing down from her goal. I was surprised by the way she interpreted the music in the SP but honestly it brought out colors in the music I didn't realize were there. I'd be very down if that's the way she delivers it from now on, especially that final moment after the layback was just wonderful.
