Nagasu ready for senior international debut...

I actually think Mirai's program from last year was more mature than her new one for this year. Who choreographed this program? I just feel that it really isn't a senior caliber program, which is too bad because she really does have good, smooth skating. So many of the moments in the program unfortunately seemed little girlish to me.

That was my impression as well. I do think she's a lovely skater, but the choreography really brought out and played up her youth in a way that I don't think works to her advantage.

Honestly I prefer Nagasu's performances to let's say Zhang's or Flatt. Zhang and Flatt may skate to more mature music, but they are always slooowwww out there. I don't think it's the youthful music that's hurting Nagasu.

I didn't say anything about Nagasu's music, I think the music suits her quite well. My concern is the choreography of the programs. They do nothing to present her as a senior lady (and I know she's only 15); she appeared quite juniorish out there.

Maybe but I'm so tired of the pretty pretty princess from the others, that I'll take Nagasu's programs. It's kind of a breath of fresh air.

I see no problem with a 15 year old actually LOOK like a 15 year old when skating, no matter what level she's competing at.

OK, is Mirai being called "fake" and "juniorish" in the same thread?
I have absolutely no problem with Mirai skating age-appropriate. She doesn't need to skate more mature to win. Now, that would ve faking.
Mao defeated the entire Olympic podium with two juniorish programs when she was 15. I don't get all this hate.

I'm not hating, I really like Mirai's skating! I just don't like some of the choreography in these programs this season. Thats it. I love her music, and it is refreshing after all the pretty princess music. But I think some of the choreography could be less...gimmicky is the word? That's just me though, I know people probably won't agree.

I agree. I hate her choreography. Of course, it would have looked a little better if she had at least skated well, but it doesn't suit her at all.

I think that she is already totally capable of doing a mature program. She is really talented in presentation and her arms are very graceful. But I also like her Tomboyish atmosphere so I am happy with what she current has. To those who feel that she is too girlish, perhaps it might have been a bit more interesting if they had prepared two programs, one in the current style and another in a different style. Both of her current programs have similar choreos that may leave them an impression that she is too girlish. But I personally have no problem with a 15-year old presenting herself as girlish in her choreos and I just love her progarms just as they are. Both are very difficult programs to perform. Her choreos and transitions are so extremely complicated and sophisticated. She has to be pushing herself all the time. If she cleanly lands all/most of her jumps next times, I believe that she deserves much higher PCS in her LP (Her current PCS was actually not bad at all, either, despite the extremely low TES; it was comparable to Miki and Rachael).

I think that she could benefit greatly from a coaching change, and go with a stronger technical coach. However, I just do not see her or her family uprooting and moving for such coaching change.

well, maybe one of us who live near or in LA could go to her parent's sushi restaurant and talk to her dad about mirai needing a better technical coach. I like charlene but her uderrotations hasn't gotten any better. Or maybe she can work with someone part time on jumps. If I lived in LA, I would talk to her parents casually as I'd order sushi.

I know I wish I could talk to her parents too. Mention Amber Corwin's reported underrotated problems and say look this has happened last season too. Why don't you try a new coach, who can hopefully nip this in the bud now...

Now that I am postting under the right thread

- First I am wondering if the "body change" factor has been ruled out here. I do not see how it can and am surprised it is not a part of every critique. It should be!

Had to change choreography, adjust speed etc.... Every darn finite aspect of her skating had to make some adjustment. I mean she really changed quick without warning IMO. I didn't see any real change happening at the end of the last season preempting this amount.

Really I would say considering what had transpired in the off season it was a "good" showing. I think coaching was not the issue - - and choreography looked like it had been readjusted so much it almost did not look like choreography anymore. The definitive voice I am not BUT her showing was standard. She showed and handled the pressure, skated wonderfully and I am sure as she gets used to her differences from last season we'll see a Mirai that is going to be a great force in FS. I do like Caroline, Rach, etc... all but Mirai I believe could be one of those skaters who will be with us on the leaderboards of the future for a long time. Maybe I am just hoping but something about her reminds me of Fumie with some Yuka S in her personality.

I will say her strengths IMO are quicker tempo routines and think they pull back to a slower pace due to the progression she / her body has made.

And I am so in agreeance with Toni - although the younger persons may not quite understand yet - there is nothing wrong with a 15 year old skater performance / choreography / routine / persona on the ice looking like a 15 year old, as a matter o'facto' there is nothing wrong with a 18 or 20 year old looking like a younger more youthful of a skater than her actual age either. I think this maturity thing is getting a little to convoluted with "adult themes" rather than skill to look mature at what ever theme of performance. I would be more impressed if Kimmie could come out and have the skill of a 19 year old while skating to a 15 year olds number with that sparkly young attitude raging thru.

So really are we talking about maturity where the skate hits the ice or the theme of the number?

And as far as popping into their restaurant - come on, I really hope you are kidding. Not only is that rude but about as "armchair quarterback" as it gets. None of us here a likely to have spent at least 4 days a week getting to know what is in Mirai's life to be throwing around such conviction that a single comment to her father would do one bit of good. Because you see her compete or even warm up would give you nothing quantifiable to as how she got there.

Umm. . . good luck with that. And she already has a separate jump coach and has for a long time. Just because someone isn't able to get that last 1/4 turn of rotation on every jump (and this tends to happen only when she's getting tired, i.e., 2nd half of long program, early in the season) doesn't mean she's getting bad coaching. This is a difficult sport and no amount of fantastic coaching will fix a problem without the cooperation of the skater's mind and body. Give the poor kid a little time to work it out.
